Que hubo le, Im studying Spanish and linguistics currently and I’ve also grown up with Spanish So Negro is a neutral term for the color black. Simply put that’s it. A black car would be “un coche negro”. El Negro = black dude and La Negra = black woman. It’s translate directly to how “black” is used in English. Negra can also just used to mean a cute girl or a girlfriend for some reason like saying “quiero salir con esa negra” = “i wanna go out with that cutie” You May also hear “Negrito” used among young men which translates roughly to ‘little black dude’ or ‘black kid’ and is usually used as buddy. Ironically not unlike how black people in the states use the N word without the hard R. Afro Latinos use it but plenty of people from all over Latin America say it to one another specially reserved for darker skinned peers. Like the A ending N word it’s informal slang used among friends it’s not something you’d say to anyone you just met. But if you have a good buddy and he is darker you can say “que hubo mi negrito?” = “wus good ma n****a” I get that’s it’s a little harsh to hear but negro and the English N word only sound similar because they come from the same latin root unfortunately. Less harsh words for black people can usually be Moreno/a (reference title the moors that conquered Spain before the reconquista) or Afro obviously referencing Africa. That’s not to say that the “N word” with a hard R doesn’t exist in Spanish cause it does and it goes by “mayate” if anyone calls a black persons that it is meant in the EXACT same way the n word with a hard R is used in English. Sad part is most black people have no idea and get called that to their face their entire lives, ironically enough because negro/a sound so similar to the N word in English they confuse it for meaning that when the word they should get mad at is mayate pronounced like: “My-yeah-teh” Hope that clears some things up everything he uses negro/a in this special just replace it with black dude/woman accordingly lol enjoying the content :)
George Lopez is relating some true stories about the older generation Mexican people. For example I was born and raised in the U.S. So were my parents. It was my grandparents who came from Mexico and they were hateful, and really ignorant about other cultures and races here. Matter of fact they looked down on me because I couldn't speak Spanish. So when George is relating these stories he is coming from the perspective of the older generation who were set in their narrow views of anyone who wasn't from their village or their part of Mexico. He is not being racist about anyone.
As a black person, us and Mexicans are cousins. I spend so much time with Mexicans and we have a lot in common. I’ve learned a fair amount of Spanish just from hanging around them
Old Mexican ppl say la negra.. or el negro.. but its not a racist term.. its just saying the blk guy or girl... George Lopez has said his grama was low key racist.. but the word itself isnt.. but true that even 10 yrs ago ppl wouldn't get offended so easily as today...
You know what's sad/hard about watching this? We were raised with such hostility and anger that it really messed up our minds. It's funny if you don't let yourself think about it too hard.
He's not racist, he's poking fun at the grandma. Totally agree with Ric Castro comment. It's funny that the grandma says "I don't know the streets, but I know the town". Implying that she had been "around the town"...lol...I think it's his way of calling out the hypocrisy of the grandma.
i have lived in the same house for 38 years and i have 3 ghosts in my house! luckily the male ghost is not a danger to use and he's been here from the beginning because he used to live here! the other one is my dog Mikey who passed away 11 years ago! and i heard a woman's voice more than once!
As a Mexican-American that grew up in the neighborhoods he’s talking about you learn a lot about how similar we all are just because we grew up in a poor neighborhood and poor kids are just kids no matter what color we were. I grew up in Compton, Lynwood and Carson. All I knew was brown and black and a sprinkle of Asian but we all related cause we were poor. The word we used to refer to a black person was just the word black in Spanish which is negro. We referred to Asians as Chinos and white people as Gueros. We’re a people full of banter and shit talking but it never comes from a place of evil or ill will. If a Mexican doesn’t give you a fucked up nickname they don’t like you. It’s how we express love as messed up as other see it. Mexicans also come in all flavors too so in the end it really isn’t ever racist but at most xenophobia in a mild manner. Goes both ways sometimes but eventually we come to understand we’re really not different at all 😂 it’s all love ❤️
Remember, he's talking about his 80 year old grandma, and this special is from 20 years ago. Old people in the 1970s had their "opinions" no matter what race.
Yeah negro/negra means black in Spanish. Nothing racist. It just referring to a black man or woman. That’s what the light bulb joke was referring to. Sylvania is a brand of light bulbs.
Yeah negro/a is not racist in the spanish language. It's the literal name of the color black. Also Sylvania is the name of a light bulb company so that's what he was referring to about the grandma tattoo bit. My boy's father from Nicaragua; his father calls him negro as a form of endearment. We wouldn't openly say that word as a racial slur. Shit We had a black afro Mexican president in like the 1800s that fought Spain for independence and abolished slavery in Mexico on a national level....his name was Vincente guerrero look him up!! Us Mexicans love yall❤😁❤!! Feel free to comment or message me on any concerns on mexicans that may give you a sense of discomfort or uneasiness. I'd be happy to breakdown and answer any questions yall may have👍
In New Mexico "Negra or Negro" is a term of endearment for someone you love. My dad always called my mom Negra and when I got older I became Negra too. This term is in our music about the one we love. It's our culture. Now, don't forget his grandma talked about the Negro she was sleeping with. That wasn't a term of endearment though just lust.
in the joke about the tattoo he was talking through the character of his grandma. He"s not racist at all...remember in part one how he gave props to one of his favorite comedians Richard Pryor?
he is not racist...when he had his talk show he did a dna on his show and revealed he is part black...my mexican potnas use it all the time but they grew up around us in h-town....shoutout to the rapper homie lil bing...free spm and bing
his is not racist its talking about childhood experiences but he did have some family members who were racists! he not the only person who has racists family members! if u dont like this kinda comedy dont watch it!
I see a lot of Hispanics defending George Lopez standup. Let me be the first to say that it’s ok, he is from a different generation and so was his grandmother. I know George Lopez had love and respect for his fellow black comedians and is just real.
Its not that the older generations were racist, its just that they were to themselves and unaware of othwr cultures so stereotypes are most of the knowledge they have
I think a common misconception is that in Spanish calling someone "Negro" is a racist term. I was born and raised in a country in Latin America and when you call someone "Negro" is not in a racist way, at least where I am from.
George Lopez is not a racist towards black people. He has many black friends. Why when he makes comedy about my people us or others don't say shhh? Negro means black in Spanish and there's Mexicans dark-skinned. If he was a racist, I wouldn't be watching his stand-up comedy. To me Carlos Mencia is a racist but then again has Latino fans. And BET had some comedians cracking jokes about Mexicans and also Katt Williams and in Boyz n the Hood movie, talking about you have to be Mexican to win the lottery... when Ricky was scratching a scratcher. In my heart I believe John Singleton had a problem with Mexicans.
Today’s society can’t handle comedy like this because society got super soft 😂 if George did this same special in today’s age he’d be cancelled because people are sensitive as hell 😂
And yet you can’t find a black comic who DOESNT go into the “dwight folk ammirite?” Routine and we all laugh. Idk why they took this personally without knowing the language. 🤷🏾♀️
Alright I’m just gonna clear it up in the simplest way so it’s easy to understand; When you hear in Spanish the word “negro” or “negra” it’s the equivalent to saying “black guy” or “black girl” you see Racist White Americans picked the word “negro” long ago to describe all African Americans without saying “nigger” everywhere they went, so no it’s actually not racist it’s like if a Latino told you the word “Black” is racist but it’s not because it’s used in a practical way to describe every day objects not people. Hope people can get the difference because not always but sometimes some people are being racist, always pay attention to the delivery 💯
The words negra (female) or negro (male) will have different meaning in different contexts, the color black or someone who is African American or of African descent. It can be used as a racial slur, it all depends on the tone. George has said that his grandma was racist, and he even got her a Jamaican caregiver when she got older to get back at her for that. The joke was not meant to be racist at the time this special was made, obviously today is a bit different.
Y’all’s demeanor changed after he said Negro, but Negro means black in Spanish so it isn’t used as an insult. He makes fun of Mexicans all the time and we laugh because it is very true.
George López is not racist, but he’s making fun about something real, elder mexicans did have something towards blacks or anyone different than their own. You think mexicans can’t be racist, well they can and they are. Not the mayority of course. I’m mexican, I love you guys, keep doing what You’re doing. Cheers from Sinaloa ❤
Us Mexicans didn’t have all the history of the us for us negro is just saying the color black we don’t say it with the intention to be racist it just happens to sound bad saying in the USA that’s one of the reasons we needed to change it to “Moreno” that means brown in Spanish just to avoid anyone from feeling that we’re racist when speaking Spanish near people that don’t ,even thought we use “Moreno” we use it for anyone that’s darker in complexion without taking in consideration the race just the color nothing racist there.
The word "Negro" or "Black" is not used in the same way here, I think one of the reasons is because, both colors are pretty much alike (talking about races) Both have received racial insults or discrimination, Mexico abolished slavery around 50 years before the US, There are Afromexican comunities in Mexico in the Southeast region of the country. I am a white mexican guy who has cousins so browns or dark, they can be considered a black person, I grew up with them since they are my family. Love them because of that. Of course there is racism here in Mexico but Classism affects us more, in the block I grew up in, there was a little kid. His father was Cuban, we called him "Negro", as a kid, we never thought that was offensive, even him, said that was his nickname, BUT, that kid, always felt proud of the color of his skin, embraced that word. Mexico is a Babel Tower, there is people from every race you can think of, we have some obvious problems, but, dont think we see you because of the color of your skin, we feel the same way in lots of different things. My family is HUGE, and I see the same in a lot of African-American Families.LA FAMILIA ES LA FAMILIA, and we all are one! We love you guys. if I have 10 tacos on my plate and you have 0, then you have 5 tacos on yours. The most similar thing among our cultures is that your abuelita COULD kick your ass and you have to respect that. #RESPECT
Hey I'm a Hispanic male 58 yrs old. Negro is pronounced just like in English and all it means is a person of color. You have negro mexicans which are dark brown such as in Azteca blood people which were dark. In spanish there are other words that are offensive to African Americans which I will not mention because it's not cool. But negro is not offensive or shouldn't be taken with offense. Negro could mean a dark skinned person . Negro is to black people as chicano is to mexican Americans. Some Mexicans americans find chicano offensive. Negro just means dark skin no matter who or what race. It's not the same as the "N" word. I say this to educate you guys and with all respect to yall as humans. Peace and Love!
George isn't racist. People play that card b/c they don't like the words he says. They don't like the fact he speaks Spanish and uses Spanish words. People don't understand that he is speaking another language. And just b/c white people get offended over our language and here the word "negro" they believe we are using a racial slur. lol It would be painfully obvious if we are being racist. It's all in the tone and white people are unable to grasp tone, sarcasm and language. They don't grasp situations in language. Which in all honesty is a great thing to have when trying to communicate with someone who is speaking a different language than you. We don't get offended so they choose to get offended for us. And that in a way is pretty racist. smh You and I understand how the older generation are and you can't really tell a story that didn't involve some sort of racism when it involved another race. I'm sure you 2 are well aware of the racism that went on in Cali between blacks and Mexicans. And really, it's not just a Cali thing. It's all over between us 2. It's just how it was back then for everyone. It wasn't until like the 90's we started getting along much better. And even more so this past decade.
You have to understand that Mexicans don't hate you because you are a different race, but they will point it out. They will still love you if you are a great person, but we don't sugercoat anything and we call it as it is. It does not mean Mexicans won't accept you, parents just love to point out when their kids do something they don't like. In this skit like a tattoo, it has nothing to do with the name being from someone black, but the fact that they got a tattoo without the parents agreeeing.

Sad part is most black people have no idea and get called that to their face their entire lives, ironically enough because negro/a sound so similar to the N word in English they confuse it for meaning that when the word they should get mad at is mayate pronounced like:
“My-yeah-teh”
Hope that clears some things up everything he uses negro/a in this special just replace it with black dude/woman accordingly lol enjoying the content :)
Cucui never had to spell it before. But it means like a ghost, scary creature, anything scary.
He's not racist, he's poking fun at the grandma. Totally agree with Ric Castro comment. It's funny that the grandma says "I don't know the streets, but I know the town". Implying that she had been "around the town"...lol...I think it's his way of calling out the hypocrisy of the grandma.
Can't wait to see him live in December in San Antonio txs and he comes on the day of my birthday
i have lived in the same house for 38 years and i have 3 ghosts in my house! luckily the male ghost is not a danger to use and he's been here from the beginning because he used to live here! the other one is my dog Mikey who passed away 11 years ago! and i heard a woman's voice more than once!
His best stand up
Remember, he's talking about his 80 year old grandma, and this special is from 20 years ago. Old people in the 1970s had their "opinions" no matter what race.
Her name Sylvania is the light bulb 💡 and she from watts bc that's the voltage ⚡ when he got burned from the light bulb 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cu cuyie is spanish for boogie man 😄😄😄😄
It's jokes...it's ok to laugh
My personal favorite is America's Mexican that one is hilarious 🤣
I'd be happy to breakdown and answer any questions yall may have👍
This way made before people got mad sensitive lol, love the reactions yall 💪💯
It’s not that he’s racist… it’s just the old mentality of the folks he’s saying. It’s funny AF!
"Sylvania Watts", ha!
He"s not racist at all...remember in part one how he gave props to one of his favorite comedians Richard Pryor?
cucuy is the boogey man
It’s the light bulb he is talking about
Please react to these TWICE A WEEK!
Negro is literally printed on the crayon below the word black. I can remember a 5th grade teacher having that argument!
he is not racist...when he had his talk show he did a dna on his show and revealed he is part black...my mexican potnas use it all the time but they grew up around us in h-town....shoutout to the rapper homie lil bing...free spm and bing
A lot of people just don’t remember that on a black crayon and marker says it. Spanish for black
He talks in general that's why
George ain’t racist, people be trippin
his is not racist its talking about childhood experiences but he did have some family members who were racists! he not the only person who has racists family members! if u dont like this kinda comedy dont watch it!
I see a lot of Hispanics defending George Lopez standup. Let me be the first to say that it’s ok, he is from a different generation and so was his grandmother. I know George Lopez had love and respect for his fellow black comedians and is just real.
George Lopez ain't racist. U Krazy!!!
Latinos are not racists , latinos are classist 😆 wich is very diffrent
The ones saying he's racist probably think he's saying n***** but he's not, he's saying "negra" which is Spanish for black
He is not racist he talk about all the family
Old school mexicans were like that
Keep the same in their families
Now it's different
Its not that the older generations were racist, its just that they were to themselves and unaware of othwr cultures so stereotypes are most of the knowledge they have
How do you get offended in a language you don’t speak? He literally said a color…. Not a slur. Chill.
His best is americas mexican for sure
negro and negra isnt racist its literally black in spanish lol
I think a common misconception is that in Spanish calling someone "Negro" is a racist term. I was born and raised in a country in Latin America and when you call someone "Negro" is not in a racist way, at least where I am from.
What is the intro song for this vid?
Exactly , people need to quit being so soft!
And yet you can’t find a black comic who DOESNT go into the “dwight folk ammirite?” Routine and we all laugh. Idk why they took this personally without knowing the language. 🤷🏾♀️
Y'all are awesome
Please react to soundgasm by Rema
It's not racist grandma was with a black guy when she was young "member"! Good stuff!!! Keep it up
Alright I’m just gonna clear it up in the simplest way so it’s easy to understand;
When you hear in Spanish the word “negro” or “negra” it’s the equivalent to saying “black guy” or “black girl” you see Racist White Americans picked the word “negro” long ago to describe all African Americans without saying “nigger” everywhere they went, so no it’s actually not racist it’s like if a Latino told you the word “Black” is racist but it’s not because it’s used in a practical way to describe every day objects not people.
Negra means black in Spanish. It's not being racist it's just the definition in Spanish.
Cheers from Sinaloa ❤
negro or negra means black in spanish guys. It is not racist at all
Us Mexicans didn’t have all the history of the us for us negro is just saying the color black we don’t say it with the intention to be racist it just happens to sound bad saying in the USA that’s one of the reasons we needed to change it to “Moreno” that means brown in Spanish just to avoid anyone from feeling that we’re racist when speaking Spanish near people that don’t ,even thought we use “Moreno” we use it for anyone that’s darker in complexion without taking in consideration the race just the color nothing racist there.
#RESPECT
ruclips.net/video/agHwH7aQFlg/видео.html this is one example :)
Sylvania is the brand of the ligth bulb watts is a neighborhood in los angeles call watts but is all so the percentage light bulb
And that in a way is pretty racist. smh
You and I understand how the older generation are and you can't really tell a story that didn't involve some sort of racism when it involved another race. I'm sure you 2 are well aware of the racism that went on in Cali between blacks and Mexicans. And really, it's not just a Cali thing. It's all over between us 2. It's just how it was back then for everyone. It wasn't until like the 90's we started getting along much better. And even more so this past decade.
When mex people say negro Negra it's not in a racist manner I promise
Sylvania is just a joke us people mean to make it racist we just like making jokes that all that it is. Much love from 🇲🇽
If you look up the definition for Black in Spanish it will make sense
You have to understand that Mexicans don't hate you because you are a different race, but they will point it out. They will still love you if you are a great person, but we don't sugercoat anything and we call it as it is. It does not mean Mexicans won't accept you, parents just love to point out when their kids do something they don't like. In this skit like a tattoo, it has nothing to do with the name being from someone black, but the fact that they got a tattoo without the parents agreeeing.
No disrespect in any of his jokes it’s the same with stereotypes with Latino names like Juan , maria, etc no disrespect 🙌🏽
Let Me Clear Things Up. The Burn Sylvania is The Name Brand of The Bulb. His Grandma Thinks She's a Black Woman From a City in SoCal Called Watts. Watts is Home To Many African Americans. If You're Not Familiar with The City of Watts Then This Joke Will Not Make Sense. Also as Many Have Explained, The Use of Negro or Negra is Spanish For Black. Though it May Sound Racists To English Speaking People, it is Not Seen as Such To Spanish Speakers as it is Not Being Used in a Negative Way.
Negra means black girl Lol
Negro means black in Spanish, it just sound racist in the US because people made the word "NEGRO" a racist word in the states.
There is no translation for the "N word" in spanish. That's an american thing.
