- Imagine being locked up with ex-convicts for four days, fearing for your safety every moment. This is exactly what journalist Peter Hitchens experienced in a recent documentary. Hitchens, who initially thought the television company would prioritize safety, found himself in a situation where anything could go wrong. In this eye-opening experiment, Hitchens gives us a glimpse into the power dynamics, lack of authority, and the shocking reality of life behind bars.
Hitchens, known for his strong opinions, went into the documentary with certain preconceptions about prison life. However, his time inside HMP Shrewsbury shattered any illusions he may have had. The experience was far more challenging and frightening than he anticipated. There were moments of nervousness and a constant feeling that something could go wrong at any time. Hitchens admitted that if given the chance to leave on the third morning, he would have gladly taken it.

4 DAYS!! I had to endure 9 months! So yeah I HAD to survive prison. It's not as bad as he makes out but coming from his toff background I'm not surprised he had a shock.
My brother was the only white pupil in his 4th year class at secondary school in Newham in 1983. Every day he was targetted and beaten up until the last lesson teacher told him to leave early and run home. This was despite reports to the head teacher by my parents on many occasions. At age 15 my brother refused to attend school and missed all his exams. The council's response? They took mum and dad to court for his non-attendance.
That's how it is. They're allowed to beat us, and we have to take it. If you don't like that, vote and act accordingly 🤷♂️

Not in 1983, no way, us lot remember it the other way round tbh. Today 2023 in certain parts of London and even other places, I can beleive that yes. I fully hear what your saying and one thing I can confidently say is if I went to school today in 2023 I would probably not have to go through a lot of what I had to.
I had the same in Manchester in 1990. I was told to leave early and teachers felt so bad for me. The paid and powerlessness as Hitch says here..the kids who targeted me had the power. I'd have to run to another borough and get a different bus. Luckily my year 11 I grew yo 6f5 a twated one lad for squeezing a kids breast. I'm an electrician now and I'd be surprised if my bullies are even alive because I've heard things about them dying through drugs unfortunately. It's very easy to be a nice person.
I once saw Mr. Hitchens stop his beautiful bicycle - a Raleigh, I think - opposite Hyde Park at a red traffic light. There was no other traffic. He waited, not for amber but for green. I introduced myself and informed Mr. H that I admired his work. He was courteous and receptive to courtesy. His behaviour at the traffic lights is symbolic of an Englishness which has now waned.

I love it when people say "i'll never commit a crime, i'll never delete someone, I won't go to prison".. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US.. is capable of evil things.
You do not have to be evil to go to prison, you do not even have to be bad. You can just be unlucky and say, miss a red light and run someone over or post a spicy meme. There are many crimes on the law books that can get you a prison sentence. Not paying the fine for not have a TV licence is one.

I have been in several prisons in Arizona as a contractor doing work. His stories pale in comparison to what we saw and heard from inmates. Keep in mind, the 8 inmates assigned to assist us were the cream of the crop; it was an earned privilege for them to work and assist us. We also had an armed guard with us at all times. Still you could feel the tension in the air. You could see the look of hatred from other inmates with whom we had never met or spoken; the raw anger, hatred and evil in their eyes.
Every middle school student should have to go on a field trip to a prison and take a walk down the hallways between the cells. Crime would drop significantly if we did that.

Very true most of us do not realize that we could easily go to prison for a single slip while driving a car. It could could come as a result of someone walking out in front of us.
The bigger problem is sending that person to the same place as career criminals. There's a huge difference between the two.

Sadly, prison is a common step for some kids brought up in the care system, so that they can survive in our competitive society.
I know it's not how the format works but I'd like to see Peter ask Mike questions just once.
Living amongst threat is experienced by many people, whether growing up in an unstable home with the threat of a step parent 24/7 (which becomes normal) or being a boy in a rough area just trying to make it through the day without having your head kicked in. Mr Hitchens will NEVER know this REAL threat, it stays with you throughout your life and you are always ready to defend yourself even when don't need to. His experience in boarding school and with selected prison situations will never be real threat.

Actually for some, the experience of boarding school was not so dissimilar - rife with bullying, ultra sadistic teachers, an atmosphere of incarceration, and no parents to protect. Our 'leaders' mostly passed through this system and it might explain significant aspects of the culture and society we have created.
When I found out a step-parent of 13 years had kidney problems and needed dialysis and a transplant, no matter where I looked I felt no empathy. Normal these days is avoiding that person at all times. I have no interest in engaging with people who've harboured ill-will to me for almost thirty years and attempted to rob my and my siblings inheritance, possibly succeeding.

I had four police officers turn up to my door a few months back. They were there to ask me to stop reporting crimes and gave me five alternative ways to contact them about the illegal all night street parties (drugs, antisocial behaviour, music etc.)
I hope you ignored them and carried on reporting it. If everyone did the same, they'd not be able to fudge the crime stats.

There have been studies that show that people are more deterred from committing crime based on their perception of how likely it is that they're going to get caught, rather than the severity of the crime. There is obviously a balance to be found but I would say that the increase in the prison population goes hand in hand with the underinvestment in the police and the legal system.

I did 7 days in jail and read half of all the books the anemics wheeled in on carts, some I requested.. and took two showers, looking as dangerous as I could muster. There was something interesting about how they socialized around "The Price Is Right" tv show every day.

I’ve never been to prison, and I hope I never do. I’m guessing, but I dare say no experience of prison like conditions will ever get anywhere near the actual experience of prison.
Interestingly, just looking at the stats - the suicide rate in UK prisons is roughly 1:1000 people per year. For the general public the rate is also about 1:1000 people per year.

My neighbour returned not too long ago from nine months in prison. Says he spent most of the time sitting around playing cards and joking. Only thing he really missed was booze.

Peter says prison is not a deterrent. He was in a controlled environment with cameras and security 24/7. When u go to a real prison he would of been the wing bitch and would have to fight in his first day. U got a taste of the regimen not the real interaction that happens with 100 inmates on the wing.

It was never close to violence. You were all on camera 24/7 and free to leave whenever you wanted to. Had any of the ex-cons been violent you they would have been recalled to court. There was no real threat.
I think the issue isn’t the protestors saying their mind. The issue is it highlights how many immigrants we have let into our country with incompatible views and culture.
