At best, the creators intended for them to be gay but never showed it on screen due to tv restrictions. At worst, they were never gay and a producer decided to get brownie points by lying and saying they were gay all along as the show was ended. Either way, if it wasn't shown on-sceen, then it isn't canon because nothing seen here is romantic, it just basic friendship But unfortunately it looks like a large portion of the viewing audience is so desperate for gay representation that they are willfully misinterpreting these platonic scenes as romantic. Either that or they simply lack the social skills to differentiate romance from friendship. And if that's what the world has come to, then it must be a very sorry place to live when no one can just be friends and everything must be romantic.
