this is the reason for the hate, the og r7: Here are some specs for the 1999 Yamaha YZF-R7, also known as the OW02:
Engine: 750 cc, DOHC 20-valve inline-four engine with a single-unit cylinder block and crankcase, titanium connecting rods, and twin injectors
      Power: 106 horsepower (79 kW)
Frame: Aluminum Deltabox II frame designed to handle extra horsepower
Suspension: Ohlins upside-down front fork and Ohlins rear suspension unit
      Dry weight: 189 kg

Excellent review and the LCD screen is definitely a shortfall and on point. It's a great track bike as I have taken it on smaller tracks as well as COTA. Yes, 600cc inline 4's will pull away on the back straight, but if you have track experience, and the 600cc riders aren't as experienced, you will be rewarded after the back straight when you overtake on the curves. If you want a fast straight line bike, get a Diavel or an H2R. for small tracks, the R7 is an excellent bike for both new and seasoned track riders.

Mostly because of the massive crater-sized gap left by the departure of the R6. The R6, like the R1, was a definitive YZF-R sportbike. Screaming inline fours with superbike and supersport respective HP numbers, aluminum spar frames and swingarms, fully adjustable suspension, the whole nine yards. Then Yamaha slaps an "R7" on what is essentially an MT07 with flashy running shoes, and we're expected to accept it as an "evolution"? It isn't. At least not the one we wanted. And yes, there's more to the R7 than just a set of plastics on an MT07. But it's still a steel frame, steel swingarm, lower spec, limited adjustment suspension, and the lower price point fit and finish of the MT07. Not bad per se, but not to the levels of the YZF-R sportbikes of yesterday. Brand new riders have no frame of reference, so to them, the R7 is just fine. And that's ok. But if the question really is, "Why does the R7 get so much hate?" The answer is that many of us remember and owned the R6 or R1. They defined superbike and supersport. They were focused, flagship models, and premium motorcycles. Yamaha can call it whatever they want, but a 70-hp parallel twin- and a great engine at that- in a steel tube frame with mid suspension just isn't a YZF-R sportbike to a lot of riders. Feels similar to Ford calling the Mach-E a "Mustang" or Yamaha again, classifying all the MTs as "hypernaked". Should you buy an R7? I dunno, it's your money do what you want. Yamaha makes great products. Just understand why your neighbor or buddy with the R6 goofs on you a little bit.

I don't know of any manufacturer selling a 600cc inline 4 for 9-10k in the US. I'm thinking he was referring to a used inline 4. The R7 is excellent value for money.

The fragile egos of those that shit on this bike because they are street squids that can’t take a corner would get destroyed by the likes of the R7 or even ninja 400s at the track. As someone who rides a lot of track my favorite track bikes have been my extremely well sorted fz07 track bike and mt09sp. The fz07 is just killer out there, tons of fun

It's Yamaha's loyal customers that feel betrayed from the R6 being discontinued for road use.
Being the more hardcore faction in the biker world they are making the most noise.
I can see where they are coming from but we are merely a few years away from the death of the internal combustion engine alltogether and they still haven't got the memo, we're lucky to be able to still have a bike as good as the R7 in 2024.
