It's remarkable that so many S160s survive in operable condition, considering their intended lifespan could be reasonably measured in months. the UK has a more restrictive loading gauge. the track gauge is the same standard guage but the locomotive itself is smaller, not as wide or tall. here in the UK running double stacked containers on rail freight isn't possible outside of HS1, as that's built to continental loading guage.

I've mentioned the Big Boy in the comments of some of his other videos, I bet he's be completely speechless if he ever got to witness 4014 making steam. I wonder what all had to be adapted other than the couplers on the American locomotives, those were interesting, but you're right, they aren't as big as we make 'em. The Diesel-electric units that replaced the Big Boys are equally massive, though rather dull next to them.

I love the CVR. One of their North Staffs Railway signalboxes used to be located about 250 metres from my home until it was dismantled & moved when my local line was lifted in 1974. The S160s gladdened my heart no end, it's superb to see them still slogging away despite their original austerity design envisaging only a short working life. But who the heck paints a BRCW Type 3 in pseudo-RES red?! Clearly there was a free bar at that meeting... As always, thanks for sharing and brightening-up an otherwise dull working weekday :-)

I know something you might enjoy, although it would be a bit of an bigger trip:
In the summer you could come to Germany (pretty close to the Belgian border) and watch the ADAC (German AAA) Eifel Rallye where they Rallye original, iconic rallye cars or perfect replicas of them.
But that's not all: it's basically directly next to the Nürburgring so you could take a car around there. Additionally there are at least two heritage railroads here. One directly where the Rally and another one a bit further. They don't run steam, but pretty old diesel rail buses. Even if they don't have service on this weekend you could maybe visit their workshop. There they have a steam engine (that's currently disassembled for boiler maintenance I think) and many other odd trains.
And if all that still isn't enough: they turned many of the old railways into recreational bicycle paths. They are very scenic and decorated with old locomotives, carts and many historical informations (those bords are also in English).
So maybe that would be something worth a trip. Maybe a successor to lemmons? Drive the cars there, take them around the Nordschleife and watch the Rallye or something like that.
Ps: There is also a pretty big model railway shop and exposition. There they also have an old loco parked outside. It's rotting but cool to look at.
Pps: Usually a weekish before the Rallye there is also an event where they race off-road lorries through quarries. I think it's Euro truck trial or something. But I'm not completely sure about that.

Were they the American answer to wartime austerity steam locomotives? They look similar to the British WD 2-8-0 engines built by Robin Riddles. You can tell they're from the States because of the smoke-box. What is weird for an American engine, however, is having buffers, hook and chains rather than knuckles. Were they just converted for the visit?

@@lmm Initially I did find the Midland-ey red a little odd too, but by the end of the video it had really grown on me. I think it's a subconscious desire to see post-1890s American locomotives in colors besides black or grey. Your cars are lacking the space to carry those 5 people? You should have brought Jupiter and then all could've stretched their legs.
You guys are mad lads. Train spotting steam engines from a bridge. In the late 90's/really 00's they still pulled some regular cargo trains with steam engines and so my dad wanted to show my sister how they look from above.
