    In todays Lawrie Goes Loco we cross the channel to Belgium to find a British built locomotive - but just why is this film star here?

      @@lmm didn't this engine appear in a kids film called Run away railway as Mildia?. its about a group of kids trying to save their local branch line after its closed by BR but at the end of it they are hijacked by two train robbers who wanted to use their engine to hijack a mail train. the kids stop the robbers and end up on the mainline after one of the Villains makes the engine run away with them and the kids on the footplate

    46:10 "Would I have this engine? Yes, yes I would."
    Well there seems to be enough Austerities left acquiring one isn't impossible, on paper at least. So count me as pulling for you on that particular dream of yours.
    Anywho, being on the wrong side of the Atlantic for such things finding decent stuff on the Austerities has been a little difficult, so thanks for the video on them.

      I really hope one day to have a couple more locos, an Andrew Barclay and an Austerity would make me very happy indeed! Maybe one day if the channel gets big enough?

    Love the railway videos!
    Errol Lonsdale was the loco hauling on my first ride on a preserved railway. Mid Hants, Alresford to Ropley when I was about five or six. That was about forty years ago - this makes me feel so old!
    But it's lovely to see her being kept in such great condition. Thanks for producing these wonderful videos!

      We do have one. It’s called the merci car, I think, France gave some of them to us as a gift for helping during WWII.

      There's actually a surprising amount of European stuff that gets rebadged for the US market.. There's rebadged mokka's and Insignias being sold as buicks.

      nope british trains don't work in the US the couplings are different and a british engine is too small for the rollingstck in the US

      @@lmm I was just reminded by re-watching this episode i only saw 2 trains of the nmbs but if you can i would check out a NMBS HLD 59 (can also be called 59 series), i saw somewhere about it there where only about 50 made.

    Great to see you back on the locos Lawrie
    Showing us all how to prep and how the mechanics work is very educational - I've learnt more from your videos over the last year or so than I have from many years of reading and watching train spotter type material
    I like the way you keep your middy cap on wherever you go, I visit the mid Suffolk at least once a year - maybe I'll bump into you there!
    Mind how you go boy, and thanks for videos, keep em cummin (pardon my attempt at gettin the good old Suffolk accent in text)

      Thank you! Half the point of doing these videos is to try and get people interested and involved - I need to be training the next generation of Loco men and women already.
      It's my home railway - and its where my Loco lives so I'll always represent them. I'll be letting people know when I'm rostered so at least you'll know when I'm there! I enjoyed the Suffolk 😂

    I volunteer on the isle of wight steam railway we have 2 austerity's and one of the engineers there works on this loco in Belgium as he fixes air pumps. Great locos very powerful

      You have WD192 Waggoner, don't you...? I remember climbing over it all when she was part on the Museum of Army Transport, in (my home town) Beverley. I need to come and see her again, really. It's been about 17 years.

      Indeed, Len and I get on well. He did a lovely job on the pump. He also helped replace the crown stays and with the tube fitting. I’m looking forward to comparing how 192 is to my loco. 198 is uncannily similar. 192 went out of traffic just before Sofie and I started coming over to do the occasional turn at IWSR

      @@phil69881 yes 192 waggoner and 198 royal engineer live on the isle of wight steam railway, the railway also own another one called Juno but it's currently in the NRM museum at shildon

    Good to see the shot of 'Waggoner', which I think is No192. It was in the Museum of Army Transport at Beverley, near where I live along with an Avonside named 'Woolmer'.
    The strange thing was that the locomotive had been overhauled by the Army & had a boiler certificate.
    A very wise move on the part of the owner to apply his wire's name to the engine, thus ensuring marital harmony continues uninterrupted.

    When you come to the US if you happen to travel to Niagara Falls up I-79 get off at Meadville Pa and see the display on Route 6 and if you have time go east to Titusville Pa and check out the OC&T,Caboose Motel, & Drake's Well where the first oil well was drilled.

      I've always really loved Austerity, it is the perfect engine to work on a heritage railway. If I could have an engine, one day I would love to have an Austerity. They're great!

    My favorite class of locomotive. Mostly because i love war machines [weather it be engine or tank] and they worked in my country The Netherlands as well as the 8800 class. Three off the Dutch ones have been preserved with one back in the UK at the Ribble Steam Railway I believe.

      I know the Ribble railway has a load of locos, but I didn't know that they had them! They're one of my favourite classes too, the perfect engine for preserved railways!

    chitty chitty, bang bang. it was one of my fave movies when i was young. that movie set me up as a kid, to build crazy crap as an adult. "from the ashes of disaster, grow the roses of success." i still hum that song as i build stuff i doubt will work, but have to make to stay sane.

    Hey Lawrie!
    I really enjoyed this mini film! Never knew this loco existed! Myself being an austerity lover! I own part of a loco at Foxfield, and work there sometimes, and trust me the two austerity locos really do work just fine on the bank! However this one with as you said, a perfect rhythm, would really give a good performance!
    The churnet just down the road from Foxfield also like this railway has a forign flagship loco, thus being one of the S160s (5197 or 6046) and the Polish TKH tank (2944 "Hotspur").

      If you want to hear WD196 working hard, check this video of when when visited Chemin Fer Du Bocq in south Belgium. The line is a really long climb.     I went inside that saddle tank and cleaned it one end to the other - went under the baffles to get along it. 1975 or 1976 KESR, preparing it for Mid Hants. Yes it was called Errol Lonsdale. I actually think they are a work of genius and easily one of the best British Locos ever designed and built. They are the ultimate incarnation of the Victorian engine. Not having superheating is a big plus on the simplicity front. From the way they go you would never beleive it has slide valves. It's very stable on the short wheel base, and very powerful indeed. You wouldn't get the stability with outside cylinders. They will do 25mph without a problem. Thanks for such a brilliant program. I think the added Mech lube helps keep it nice and quiet.

    Hard to think that Reg Varney, Arthur Mullard and Frankie Howard were once playing around on that footplate! Such a brilliant film, laughed my head of with some of the antics - point levers being thrown into ponds, station master giving in his notice because he could not handle all the coming and goings. Great to see the loco is still with us, long after the actors have passed on.

    Just found your great channel and now watching all of your videos... But i would love to see some German steam locomotives with your style of videos.
    Of cause at this time it isn't possible, but i hope it would happen at some point.

    These are just right for the job they were designed for . Heavy shunting and short working. They have done much more over the years but their design was to start and pull 1000 ton on the level.
    Seeing you crawl into between the frames brought back memories. The line I used to volunteer on had 2 miles or so at 1/90 ish. With 6 on the fire hole door would start to glow red. The bark did / is even making me smile now. Big engines need load and be allowed to run fast. An Austerity barking to climb or starting a train is just as wonderful as a pacific stretching her legs with 10 + on the hook. For me an austerity every, any and always ... no contest.....
    The condition of this one shone through, even the bits the public don’t see were clean. That take dedication and love. Yep love. To see a couple working their own loco and keep it in such a condition needs respect appreciation and a bow of recognition. Very nice to see her working.. and your smile. If the owner ever sees you turn up with a low loader I recon you will see a scene very much like a farther getting out the shotgun as the young boy comes up the garden path for his young beautiful daughter.       I agree the Austerity is a wonderful piece of kit. The noise of the ones working out the bank at Foxfield is just magnificent.
      Chris is so proud of his Loco and it shows, its magnificent. I doubt he'd let me get anywhere close with a low loader 😂 😂

    Brilliant video and what a fine example of an Austerity Tank! I learnt quite a bit and enjoyed watching. I also like the Belgian additions to the loco, those switches for the lights and battery disguised as a tool box are nice touches. :)

    Awesome video, the J94 (austerity) in my profile pic is called Lord Phil built 1944 but was rebuilt as a later 1960's built austerity, the heritage railway have done a very good job at overhauling the loco :)

    One of my favourite types of steam loco. I wonder how the identity 68011 was selected for the St Trinians film - the real 68011 was one of only 2 J94s based at my local depot (Hull Dairycoates)

    Nice video mate, theres one at the midland railway in derbyshire, stones throw away from me, called Lord Phil.
    Got this snippet off an article online:
    Lord Phil’ was built in 1944 for the War Department and is one of the large types of 485 Austerity locomotives, built mainly for military and industrial use. The locomotive was originally Hunslet 2868.

    I wonder if something like this would be able to run a smaller lesser used main line service in the UK like one of the one train per week services (Stalybridge to Stockport) or a branch line that is part of the national network, you would have to fit all the required equipment but it would be an interesting alternative to replace Pacers.

    I remember this loco from its Errol Lonsdale period on the Mid-Hants railway. I used to know one of the co-owners quite well. Lovely to see it here on LMM :-)

    Hi, a very nice vlog. As a former ships engineer, i often had to lubricate the engine. In one hand the oil can and in the other a dot of polising cotton to clean the lubrication ponts. I miss that. Ha.ha.

      Hi. When i was a student i often got a kick in the ass, if i forgot to clean up the spilled oil. And the chief engineer somtimes got engry when i dilated the oil too close to the valve springs. I had to that with a piece of wood. He said, look at your older colleagues, most of them are missing a part of there vingers. They cannot order ten beer in the pub, nine and half or less. It was a good school and i still have all my fingers. Ha, ha. @@lmm

      Lawrie the miniature railway I work at has two small 14xx one 1401 and the other 1402 and also question will you ever do a Lawrie’s go locos on the 14xx’s

    You should take a look at the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway and their Belgian/German/Austrian Heeresfeldbahn locomotive No. 10 Sir Drefaldwyn and other Austrian rolling stock.

    There were actually plenty of foreign made locos in Belgium. Captured German army locos after WW1, American “consolidation” type locos made by Alco and Baldwin in the 1920s and also some locos made in Britain to Belgian state railway specs, also in the interwar period (not quite sure when).

    Might want to invest in a long-spout oil can like we use here in the States, saves having to get in-between the frames to oil up the fiddley bits, particularly on the old Stephenson link valve gear .
    As for why they used it on these instead of something like outside Walschaerts gear, I'd hazard a guess and say it was because it was a simple, proven, and reliable design that could be produced quickly under wartime conditions.

      Shipwright1918 indeed, they wanted an engine quick and cheep. Hunslet took the designs they already had, with casting patterns that they had available and just changed sone things to meet army requirements. Bit bigger wheels and larger water tank for example

    I wonder if this video means we might get to see Lawrie check out other war department steam locomotives or even bigger locos?
    Also the rail line in the video is very lovely and so is the Austeritie.

    I used to live in belgium and volunteer at maldegem when I was just 9. I worked on Fred at the time. You'd be surprised how much it has changed over the years. I definitly need to go back for a visit

    To be honest if it weren't for some of the shots and saying he was in belgium, you would almost think he was on the nene valley railway. Another good video. Really want to see you in a usa s100 or s160 locomotive.

      The nene had many less level crossings! But yes, both have Austerites and continental carriages! I would kill for a s160! S100 very high on the list!

      @@lmm Cant wait to see what videos come out from your trip to the Nene. I would say one of the best sights i have see of a S160 is a video taken from the NYMR of their 9F and S160 double heading a, all be it rather small, goods train out of Grosmont.

      mamodsteam returns the main reason why we changed the headlights into LED is because of light pollution. The railway runs in a very built up area. All the streetlights simply overpower paraffin lamps making the train invisible at crossings in the dark. We did our best to do it as clean as possible, glad you like it :)

    In the netherlands we have 2 of those NS 8811 (WD 75080) Owned by the SSN and operational and NS 8826 (WD 75115) owned by the ZLSM but not operational

    The reason they didn't go for outside cylinders is because they wanted a tried and tested design, the "J94's" are essentially a slightly modified Standard Hunslet 50550 class, which was an evolution of the 50540 class, both of which are inside cylinder machines. The MOD had origionally planned on ordering LMS 3F tanks

    The engine would have been issued to the Royal Engineers, Royal Corps of Transport came into being in the 1960s and Royal Logistic Corps corps later.
    Also the MoD name also came into being in the 60s before that it was the War Department.

    It's certainly bizarre seeing a UK engine in continental Europe. Seeing this reminds me of the Gresley A4 that's on display in Canada. Another thing I remember is that the design for quite a few Belgian engines took inspiration from a Scottish design - the Caledonian Railway 721 class.

      Yes, it is on the surface, but when you look at it, totally appropriate!
      I saw Dominion of Canada when it came to the UK.
      Lots of designers took and borrows bits and ideas from each other.

    Stashing steam engines aside during the cold war made total sense. No electronics to be fried by EMP. The heritage railways in the UK provided a reserve of working trains which could have been taken by the Govt to rebuild the rail network. Several trains were stored across Europe but they were not always maintained or kept in dry environments.

    i think most American train fans wonder at how interior cylinders became a thing, but for a wartime design i think there are two things.
    first, it was an 'off-the-shelf' design needing no development time. and second, having the cylinders on the interior would probably offer some protection.
    same for the saddle tank. the water would be very effective at protecting the boiler.

    I think it'd be amazing if you could someday get out to the US and drive some of the monsters they've got over there. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Union Pacific Big Boy, of which I think they recently restored the 4018.
