Greetings from British Columbia, Canada. I’m not the sort of person that would do a daily journal, but I’m having a lot of making myself a ring bound journal to document my quilt projects.
Couldn't agree with you more!! I once heard someone ask an artist about his unusual work: "What makes this art?" I'll never forget the artist's response: "It's art bc I'm an Artist and I SAY it's ART". 😎 I've kept that in mind ever since--it was on the Phil Donahue show...if that tells you how LONG ago that was (30 years ago...🤦🏻♀️)
This just what I needed to hear! This was beautiful. I been struggling because I am not a artist. You can find your own way your own method and style. I had hordes of scrapbooking material from the early 2000, when I moved I donated to friends and church groups. Now I wish I still had all the stuff again. Thanks to opening my eyes to a new world of art!
This is now my favorite junk journal video! I love to hear your thoughts and practical philosophy on the purpose and benefit of your journaling! Thanks also for the encouragement to join a community. That's on my to do list for this month!
Great tips & information. I journal & collage everyday. I have a "craft" space, but I keep my journal next to my place on the couch. I have a clear plastic shoe box with ephemera, large scraps, small scraps, some stamps, ink, book pages, scrap writing paper & some washi. I read, knit, journal & collage everyday. Makes life happy.
such great tips!! I've just started junk journaling and I'm loving it!! I really love the freedom it gives. I already had a practice that I "mess up" the first page of any journal I write in so that I can get over the fear of "ruining it" . I'm going to LOVE this month!!
YES YES YES! I love that. I still have first page fears, and the way I combat them is by "introducing myself". Sometimes it looks like a passport photo and my name. Sometimes it's a bullet list. But it's just a small introduction to take away the fear. I LOVE that you mess it up on purpose. There's so much freedom in that practice. And, I'm sure you've found, even when you're trying to fail on purpose, sometimes it looks beautiful.
@@CayleeGrey I LOVE your idea too!! :) I may incorporate that as well if you don't mind. :) I'm loving that I have no set intention on the page. I am allowing myself to just play and explore. If I don't like something or if something rips for eg I go with it. Shift with it. It is such freedom!!

Hi Caylee! Loved this video. ❤ I found you on Google podcasts! Get messy! I love listening to your podcasts and now watching your videos. I am in the middle of a 100 day challenge to walk 10k steps a day inspired by the podcast of you with your husband. :) My favorite piece of advice you gave is---ignore perfection. I started Junk Journaling as a way to relieve stress from a job in the medical field that demands perfection. I especially love that you infuse yourself and your real life into your media and remind me that Journaling is not just a past time or a hobby. It's art, and it's therapeutic. :) I am glad to see you collaborate with other JJ artists. I was already watching Joie, Barbara, Rachel, and of course, you. And on a side note. You inspired me to get a typewriter! I bought one at an estate sale (very inexpensive), and it is cursive!! I noticed the one you used today is cursive. Then, of course, I purchased another one that is regular print. Love them!! Looking forward to your next video and podcast. Love from Texas, 🇺🇸
Aww what a lovely comment. Thank you so much for it. My husband is going to be SO proud of your 100 day challenge. I can wait for him to wake up and tell him 😀 10k a day is AMAZING. Go you. Even just one day of 10k steps! Yesssss. It’s SO hard to ignore perfection but that’s the exact place you’ll find freedom and all the beautiful things that come with creation. It’s not easy. I find that junk journaling is perfect for it. It lends itself well to the messy look. I’m so happy about your typewriter. I don’t often recommend supplies but a brush pen and a typewriter have really changed so much of how I create. I have two too 😂 although this cursive one needs some TLC because I didn’t intend to write in red. I used to think they were the same as using a computer but they’re really, really not. Thank you for your beautiful comment.
💕😍Caylee, anytime I see one of your journals or working in them, I’m instantly inspired to want to create in mine. 😌I can look at your journals all day
Awesome video and love your pages & your inspirations, tips & ideals. You created those pages effortlessly, with no over thinking. Thanks for sharing 🥳❣️
Maybe try create something with the PURPOSE of messing up. It’s a nice (albeit scary) practice to get you brave and creating, and you might just end up liking it (which would be failing at messing up, but still wonderful of course).
Try an "ugly" junk journal--specifically using your least favorite (read: U-GLY) stuff--or start an experimental journal where you work out all the kinks (like Frankenstein's monster). Can't mess anything up there. And it will help you build your competence--thereby building your confidence. Another option is to just go totally random and just do pages for pages sake then randomly put them together later. There's a certain kind of beauty in that kind of collection --Get out your toys and play-just PLAY--have FUN. Enjoy the process--the project will take care of itself 😉👍🏼😎
Hi Caylee, This is the first time I have seen your video channel. I like the journals you made and I really like the way you are an encouragement to others. Jesus said to love God with all of our hearts and love others. I feel the love through your words and the tone in which you speak. You are a blessing! I feel blessed to have found you today! 😇🙏🏼
I love that snippet of poetry, I found yr video inspiring, I have been craving creativity for a long while & stalking videos on junk journaling!! Lol ~ I just need to jump in sometime!
Absolutely!!! DIVE in--if you're hesitant--start small --a good many of my favorite junk journalers work on index cards (soooo NOT intimidating) or make little junk journals (out of small lunch bags or scrap papers and cardboard... or index cards as mini journal covers--sooooo cute!!) After stalking jujo vids for a long while: I started by picking out my least favorite papers (the U-GLY stuff!!) and all the homely stuff I had that I knew I'd never use and just got it over with and made one. She's wonky. But then I was off and running--YOU GOT THIS 😎
@@TheCrabbyCrafterlol ~ Thankyou for your encouragement! 😊❤ That is so Lovely of you, yes & I recognise good advice when I see it, index cards, starting small & using up the "the homely, uninspiring junk papers would definitely insire me to not be precious out it, I know the value of baby steps 😊 I appreciate you taking the time to inspire me 💕 because truth be know, I still haven't jumped in yet!
Try making yourself an "ugly journal"--using your least liked papers and a cover that's too big...ugly embellishments, stickers you'll never use-with the intention of simply gluing/tearing/creating. I now have two going--one I use for "experiments"--lol like Frankenstein's monster (I try stuff there just to see if it will work before I do things in my "good" journals) and one is just plain U-GLY. OY. I can't mess them up. No matter what - Oddly, they're really growing on me (lol, they'll probably end up being my favorites somehow--though I really can't see that at this point). 😎
@@TheCrabbyCrafterlol omg this is a great idea I needed this thank you... I focus on making my books look nice and you forget to let go to free yourself 👏👍
New to this junk journaling thing. was researching something else when I found this rabbit hole. My question is what is the difference between a junk journal you use yourself one one made to sell?
Please read my comments knowing that I love paper and everyone else's journals. I have been a paper artist for many, many years. I have dabbled in all sorts of projects. Currently, I am altering 4 decks of cards for Christmas gifts. Each card with a different technique, a huge project but I'm loving it. I love paper! I want to make a junk journal but here is my issue and where I need help. I don't write my deep thoughts down. I've never written or kept a record of anything personally so what would I use this journal for? If I go to all this work and use my precious ephemera on a journal that will have no purpose I am stopped cold. Any advice would be welcome to overcome this barrier. Thank you so much. I am glad to have found your channel.
Hey Jan. You have a totally valid question and concern! It's actually super common, and one that I go through seasons with myself. It's only recently that I've started journaling in my journals. I say follow your heart! It's the best guide. You love paper. Just put a bunch of paper down and celebrate that. No need for any words or writing. You can find and create your own purpose for your journal. It doesn't have to be the same purpose as someone else's. The purpose of it can be to just have fun. There doesn't have to be a deeper meaning and it doesn't need to cure world hunger. Journaling for pleasure is a worthwhile reason. As I mentioned, journaling is new to me. In the past I would just stick things down together that looked nice. That was where I found my magic. And now I've forgotten how to do that and wish I could still create something beautiful without lettering on top of it... i might need to make that a challenge for myself. Do what your heart wants.
@@CayleeGrey Thank you for a lovely heartfelt response. I want to make a journal because I think they are beautiful and mine will be a reflection of me! What more reason do I need than that, right? Christmas is coming and I have always made all of my gifts. I could gift the journal I make. Thank you so much and I just want to add that I think you were very kind to respond. Stay safe, Hugs.
@@CanadianQueenmagenta That sounds amazing! What a gift to give to your loved ones - they can use it as a piece of art, or write in it, or just put photos in it. Yup! No more reason needed
I've taught journaling workshops for almost 25 years--one of them is called "Journaling for all seasons, all reasons" and it outlines many of the different kinds of journals we can keep (there's a myriad--I wasn't able to scratch the surface, but I gave it a go, lol) It doesn't have to be your deep thoughts--it can be a visual journal (I love what you say "what more reason" than because junk journals are beautiful and yours would be a reflection of you--that's a fabulous reason!) so it could just be pretty. It could also be a commonplace book--keep things in it that you want to remember: fabulous quotes, thoughts of the day (lite), things that strike your fancy--I read years ago--that I believe it was Carly Simon--who used to take three Poloroid pics every day of things that inspired her in some way or that she found beautiful and at the end of each day put them in a photo album--what a great collection she had! It could be a list of creative ideas or a junk journal idea journal (so meta!) SOOOOOO many things they CAN be, but they don't HAVE to be anything but fun and pretty. Love to see your Christmas decks--are you on Instagram?
Simply beautiful . Thank you for sharing and giving the reason and the purpose for journaling . I’ve found you by just a simple search and I’m so happy to be a new subscriber. Hugs from California xx

I love all your journals.
Awesome video and love your pages & your inspirations, tips & ideals. You created those pages effortlessly, with no over thinking. Thanks for sharing 🥳❣️
I loved this. Thank you. I’m going to start a junk journal and you have inspired me. ✌️
There are so many good tips here and great encouragement. Thank you so much!
Hi Suzanne
You got a cute name. Lol
Thank you for sharing this, page paralysis from fear of messing up is my worst habit. Then I put it all away again and never start it.
Your journals are beautiful
Hi Caylee,
This is the first time I have seen your video channel. I like the journals you made and I really like the way you are an encouragement to others. Jesus said to love God with all of our hearts and love others. I feel the love through your words and the tone in which you speak. You are a blessing! I feel blessed to have found you today! 😇🙏🏼
Excellent supportive tips! Ones I will use to remind myself as I work.
Creating and taking action is the best tip of all 💛
Wow that indrodecition so good
I love that snippet of poetry, I found yr video inspiring,
I have been craving creativity for a long while & stalking videos on junk journaling!!
Lol ~ I just need to jump in sometime!
Juuuuuuuump. It’s not as scary as your head is telling you.
Absolutely!!! DIVE in--if you're hesitant--start small --a good many of my favorite junk journalers work on index cards (soooo NOT intimidating) or make little junk journals (out of small lunch bags or scrap papers and cardboard... or index cards as mini journal covers--sooooo cute!!)
After stalking jujo vids for a long while: I started by picking out my least favorite papers (the U-GLY stuff!!) and all the homely stuff I had that I knew I'd never use and just got it over with and made one.
Thank you. Your voice is so soothing
aw, thank you! I struggle with the fact that I have an accent on the internet sometimes so that’s really lovely to hear.

Hi sherry
You got a cute name m I
Jurt watched your beautiful video, I struggle with being perfect in my journals its something I'm working on fingers crossed I will learn to let go x
You gotta just keep repeatedly mess up and voila :)
No matter what -
Oddly, they're really growing on me (lol, they'll probably end up being my favorites somehow--though I really can't see that at this point). 😎
@@TheCrabbyCrafterlol omg this is a great idea I needed this thank you... I focus on making my books look nice and you forget to let go to free yourself 👏👍
New subbie. Lovely and excellent suggestions. Hopefully you are having the Happiest New Years!! Namesta ✌️🕉️🐞

New to this junk journaling thing. was researching something else when I found this rabbit hole.
My question is what is the difference between a junk journal you use yourself one one made to sell?
Loved this so much Caylee! 💖 thank you for the inspiration!
Hi Melanie

Thank you!
Oh man Caylee, those aesthetic walls!!
They are amazing. Dusty. And falling apart. And I have to sweep the floor every day because of the crumbling. But amazing.
Hello
Thanks for this! Such a good reference and starting point!
I've taught journaling workshops for almost 25 years--one of them is called "Journaling for all seasons, all reasons" and it outlines many of the different kinds of journals we can keep (there's a myriad--I wasn't able to scratch the surface, but I gave it a go, lol)
It doesn't have to be your deep thoughts--it can be a visual journal (I love what you say "what more reason" than because junk journals are beautiful and yours would be a reflection of you--that's a fabulous reason!) so it could just be pretty.
It could be a list of creative ideas or a junk journal idea journal (so meta!)
SOOOOOO many things they CAN be, but they don't HAVE to be anything but fun and pretty.
Love to see your Christmas decks--are you on Instagram?
love these! The neon colors look amazing on the spines!
I am a massive fan of the contrast of neon + vintage books.

Hi Caylee! First time to your channel. New subscriber. So enjoyed this video. South African?😃🎀💕
That’s some good accent spotting :)
hi Caylee, I love your style!! what type of paper do you use for your pages?
Thank you. I use mostly Moleskine paper, vintage papers and ledgers, vellum, old book pages, magazine pages, and occassionally Arches watercolour
Maybe it’s the moleskin… I use mostly those other papers in my journals as well but there’s one that you use that just looks so smooth to write on. I don’t use a lot of moleskin so maybe that’s the one.
Hi beautiful
