My father was born in Kansas in 1918, and grew up playing Fox and Geese in the snow. He said it was a game that was played by the children of pioneers, which would have been his parents. I had no idea that it was so wide spread. Such a fascinating video. Btw, it’s great exercise.
You mentioned that some variations of the game start with more geese. You could think of adding more geese as a way to help/handicap either player. If you find that the fox is usually winning, add another goose next time you play. If the fox is usually loosing, remove a goose next time you play. (Something like the way you handicap Go by having black start with one to nine stones already on the board.)
Oh wow I saw this thumbnail and immediately thought of playing Nancy Drew White Wolf of Icicle Creek. It has this game. Didn’t think there could be a physical game. Super cool.
When I was a kid in the US in the 1960s we played a game called Fox and Geese in the snow, but it wasn't this game. I wonder if it was the Russian game you referenced. You would stamp out a wheel-shaped path in the snow, with a circle and several spokes crossing in the center. One kid, the Fox, would start in the center, and the rest, the Geese, would start on the circle. It was a tag game, with the fox trying to tag one of the geese, who would then be the new fox. There weren't really any rules except that you had to stay in the paths. As far as the board game, one set of rules I've seen say that the geese can't move backwards. But I wonder if the people who have published those rules are mixing it up with Asalto, where the goal is for the geese to occupy the "fortress", the bottom arm of the board.
there is polish version as well: "Woolfs and sheep" i remember playing it with my grandma... You totally warm up my day and posibly inspired me to make a game myself :) THX ! 100% Sub from me :)))
Great video, thanks! I've always loved abstracts and quality game pieces. I look forward to you sharing any 'how-to' making videos as well. How about a discussion of the mancala family of games?
Wow, this video was great! Would you be looking into selling your boards? It's very hard to find good fox and geese boards and yours looks just perfect. I saw you talked to one person about thinking about opening a Esty store and I recommend doing that as well. I honestly think there will be a lot of interest for your boards if you do it.
Thank you for the vote of confidence! I do plan on opening a storefront at some point, life is just very much all over the place right now - hence my lack of video updates in a while.
@@TheRavensTable I completely understand and do make sure you take time for yourself as well. Once you get your shop open I will definitely be there to buy!
Good eye! In that case, the fox should have. I just missed the move as I was thinking ahead to all the other points I wanted to cover in the video. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much! I make most of the game boards shown on the channel, including this one. I've toyed with the idea of opening up an Etsy store or something similar. Just not sure how much interest there would be,. Thanks for watching!
Pretty interesting video ☯️ I got here because I was actually watching some thing about medieval times in general and they referenced this game ♟♟🎲 i’ll probably get this game & give it a try

Thanks for explaining another awesome game! Beating the fox is hard!
It can be, for sure! But adding more geese to the board can help even the odds up.
Thanks for watching!

Believe it or not, Mancala is almost certain to be the next game family I cover!
Thank you for this video now I have understood thank you🙏🏻...

6:33 why didn't the fox jump diagonally to eat middle goose then horizontally and backward?
Good eye! In that case, the fox should have. I just missed the move as I was thinking ahead to all the other points I wanted to cover in the video.

@@TheRavensTable understandable
06:35 Am I wrong in thinking that the fox could have eaten 4 geese in one go? Up, left, down and diagonal?
How spell holli toffel
That is a beautiful game board. Where did you get it from?

Game is interesting,,,,,,this pair of players can be as ""Wolf"" and ""Rabbit "" thankyou 🎉
Are those name from a regional variation? I can see where they might be called that, but never run across those names exactly.
Thanks for watching!
Nice game
I think it is quite fun. Children also seem to really enjoy it.
Thanks for watching!
At 6:35, the fox could've taken 3 geese in one move.
Good catch, you are indeed correct! 🙂
@@TheRavensTable Great vids BTW, I very much enjoy the format with the main focus on the history and such! Cheers!
