Beekeeping in the winter can be a huge challenge. Understanding exactly how bees manage to survive a cold winter is important for northern beekeepers.
Honey bees do not hibernate during the winter. Instead, they cluster together as a colony and heat each other. Today, let's check in on some winter clusters.
NOTE: Do not inspect your hives in the winter. Wait until spring when temperatures reach 65 degrees (f) or higher before lifting frames for inspection. Tops can be removed quickly to check or replace candy boards.
