26 years old now and was always so stubborn about learning a real skill/trade which my parents would always tell me to do but I never listened. Always working dead end jobs and realized I’ll be doing that for the rest of my life if I dont learn something I can take with me for the rest of my life. And I figured I want to learn to fly as it’s something I can take with me for the rest of my life. Found your channel and trying to soak up as much info as possible I really want to learn a skill that if I ever get fired or lose my job I’ll always have that skill I can transfer to anywhere. Learning to fly seems very fun and very rewarding looking for the best way to start my training here in Hawaii.

Brings back memories, good ones, and a Cherokee 140 with a flooded carb due to a leaky float engine failure with just enough altitude for a 180º return. Whew! That was 1967.
@@EvanLuft So, first outing last Thursday. Very thermally and even conditions. Instructor handled the gusty crosswind takeoff which normally I would have done but after 14 months layoff it would not have been sensible.... I took us out of the circuit at 2,000ft and spent the next twenty minutes simply flying around Derbyshire/Staffordshire working on achieving a consistent straight and level and airspeed. It took a while and needed regular small tweaks as the wind direction and speed was so variable. After nailing that and making sure the trim was spot-on we headed back for a couple of low approach and go round practices on 35. I realised on the way home that I'd not once checked the DI against compass after we had taken off, and I forgot carb heat on at least one of the approaches. Still, we ended up at the right height and airspeed on the approaches which tutor seemed happy with. The go-arounds were messy because I was taking my eyes inside for taking the first stage of flap back off, so we practised messing with the flaps without looking. Tutor landed us on runway 28 (there are three at EGBD) I haven't used before; even he had to admit he'd floated a bit, with airspeed a couple of knots high. I expect this is all familiar sounding stuff to someone with your experience! Next lesson Monday, hoping it will good for circuits on 23 and getting closer to happy relaxed near perfect landing.

I always tell newer pilot to just get in the airplane and go flying... because confidence with the aircraft controls will increase exponentially with stick time. I know 200 hour pilot that are WAY better pilots because they are practicing a more complex aircraft than some 3000 hour pilots that just fly the same airplane every single day in the same area with no weather. haha Also... once you get confident with your landings... it will transfer over to every other aircraft you fly. At some point... an airplane is just an airplane and you'll feel ready to take on any aircraft!

For the best results on power off 180's (what you did there) is on downwind to have a runway go into your half of strut visually when you look at the wing. After abeam threshold and power off continue on downwind until done counting to 10, then turn towards numbers and adjust for the wind if needed. Full flaps a bit earlier than you do and you would be on the spot every time.
Got my PPL in a 172. Delightful a/c to fly. Hard to get it to wing drop in a stall. It also, for me at least, had a tendency to just glide along the runway when landing.
That’s awesome and I agree. Did some stalls and spins a while back (probably my favourite part of any aircraft training) and you almost have to cheat with aileron to get the airplane to spin. Such a forgiving airplane! :)
Im 13 years old. I got into aviation since im a baby because my grandpa was a mechanic at el al. I want to start taking flight lessons when im old enougth. For now im memorizing everything i can and trying on msfs2020.
every time I encounter a "woohoo!!! pilot" video I first check how old it is and second I check their yt channel for recent posts to see whether they are still alive.
Haha what are the chances eh! Well my training takes me back to the Morgan air days. But it is always humbling leaving professional flying world and getting back into a small airplane to do some simple flying. So much fun and a good challenge I must say. And YEH used to be one of the best airplanes when it was owned by fly right.

425 = trailing link gear; 172 = spring steel gear. kinda the opposite. Then you get your high wing ground effect cushion of air, and a gob of patience. They taught us the power of 180 for reals early on prior to solo IIRC.
Always smart to wear a mask to protect you from people who are not in the plane with you… lol Why on earth would you wear something that would obscure you vision?
Hated the -172 at first but now I'm getting to where I'm just undisturbed by it. I always like to fly power off 180 faster than best glide so I have maneuvering energy. BTW It's the water that creating sink on short final, If you have water in front of your landing zone keep a little altitude or speed to deal with sink.

Hey! It all depends on the type of airplane. In a single engine aircraft like in this video, the higher you are in the sky, the better off you are because you have a longer time to troubleshoot the problem and find a landing spot to glide to. :) all sorts of things break all the time in aircraft but usually they are minor problems that don’t impact a flight directly. But most emergencies no many how serious are manageable and pilots are trained to get the airplane down safely.
@@EvanLuft Im struggling a little with trim settings and setting air speed with addition of flaps. Are you using your control pressure to set an airspeed then trimming off pressure? Or setting a go to trim after powering back and adding flaps?
I agree! And that’s how I was taught but their policy now is “full rich” all the time for circuits. They actually kept telling me to keep full rich as per their school policy now haha
It is the stall warning. Basically when the airplane slows enough to where there isn’t sufficient airflow over the wings. On landing, it is considered a good thing when you hear the stall horn right as your wheels touch down :)

Quick question from a new student... if you put ADS-B in that 172 and run ForeFlight on an iPad, you wouldn't really "need" to spend time scanning outside for other aircraft. Is that right?
Actually, you are correct for the most part, Foreflight with ADS-B is incredible and I highly recommend it. However, there have been many instances where for some reason or another, certain aircraft's transponders just don't show up. So if you are in VFR conditions... it is still a MUST that you keep an eye outside the airplane for other traffic that the ADS-B may not pick up. Although ADS-B is a very useful tool :)

Yeah I am sure there is someone who could better answer this, but for some reason (perhaps because of older equipment in some airplanes) their transponders don't show up on ADS-B. It is scary sometimes at medium sized airports where there is no tower controller or good radar.

GYEH. I flew that plane in North Bay ON back in 2016/17. Did my first solo and got my PPL in her. Good times. Glad to see it still flying.

If people struggle with engine off practice, they should have a go at gliding.
Good advice! Recently learned to paraglide :) so much fun but you have to hit your landing spot. Learned a lot from the paragliding courses

Bomber pattern in such a tiny plane ;) I like to do mine thinking the engine will always go out, keeping the runway about midway through the strut.
