Ehh not really. It was an amazing match but this was the continuation of a bad run for punk in 2013. Lost his title at royal rumble, lost his rematch for the title at elimination chamber, lost the winner faces rock at mania match to cena, lost a mania 29 to taker, then lost to brock lesnar. Several big time matches against the top stars of the company that he lost. He only beat Jericho in his return match but jericho wasnt one of the top stars at the time
@@nothingspecial8114 you're right. But this match in a vacuum was a fantastic display of his elite level of in-ring psychology. At that point, everyone watching could appreciate the quality of Punk's work and overlook the bad booking decisions that kept cutting his legs out from under him. At the time, it may have been a bad look from a booking perspective, but looking back, it was a fantastic match that will be remembered fondly as part of Punk's legacy.
Yes, but actually no. Here’s the problem: Punk spent 2013 proving that he could hang with the biggest names ever in WWE. He had matches with John Cena, The Rock, Chris Jericho, Brock Lesnar and the Undertaker. In every match, and the promos leading up to them, Punk brought the house down with them and had the match of the night, delivering big and making these guys look good. Yet of all of those matches, he won exactly ONE match. Against Jericho. The rest of them he lost. At some point, once you lose enough of these matches, it doesn’t matter how good you made it look, at the end of the day, you lose the match, which means your stock drops in the eyes of casual fans. Perception is reality in wrestling. If the fans see you lose a bunch of big matches, at some point, they think of you as a loser. That means they stop being invested in you, that means you drop in the card and lose your status as a main event player. Worse, there was no payoff. For all of these matches that Punk had putting over big stars, he wasn’t in line for an angle for the world title, he wasn’t in line for a main event at Wrestlemania. Without a payoff to those matches, what was the point?
Punk would’ve won had Brock have won most of his prior matches, but he only won 2 of them and only one felt legit so that’s why Brock needed the. Win here but would’ve loved the best vs the beast wwe title match
I don’t even know if Punk would have won then. Vince had a hard-on for Brock since forever. But it didn’t make sense for Lesnar to have lost some of his early matches. He should have won against Cena, he never should have lost against Triple H.
What a match this was. Contrary to what Punk felt, I felt like his stock went up with this match.

Absolutely it did... And so it did with Taker's match as well. I mean we still remember those matches as one of the greatest.

@@Jeff_Pryce I feel like they had Lesnar lose his first few matches as some silly payback for him leaving the WWE and suing them.
