Thanks for the video Doc. I'm a 61 year old guy and I get excited to see the notification for your stove and coffee videos. I'm not sure what that says about me.
I have several alcohol stoves and they work ok. I live in the Western US and taking a chance of spilling fuel and burning half of the state is not a chance I am willing to take. I use a multi fuel Optimus Polaris stove when camping. I wouldn't use the one in the video even if I were going to use an alcohol burner. You may have made an error filling the first couple of times but, that goes to show how easy it is to have problems. Especially while on the trail when tired or in bad weather.
    Again, thanks for the videos,
    Sean

To be fair, not many of these alcohol burners can compete with a good can stove. Nobody likes to admit that, tho.

I have a couple of thoughts about the stove..
The integrated pot stand is a nice idea but it’s kind of narrow for a large pot. Even though the burner has a wide flange base if a larger pot is not centered it could be unstable. The amount of fuel the stove takes is more in line with what would be needed for a larger pot. It doesn’t make sense to have a burner that takes that amount of fuel and not be wide enough to safely accommodate a pot of the appropriate size. Maybe it would be better if the body was shorter so an ounce or an ounce and a half would fill it to the necessary level.
I use a solo burner (Trangia style) and I like the fact that it can be capped and packed with any remaining fuel. There is always a small amount of fuel left in an open burner after pouring out the excess. The choice is to put it away and hope it doesn’t cause a problem or wait until it evaporates.

Obviously, filling up to top will result in expansion of the alcohol. 2 oz was too much as you identified. I use 1 oz with no problem. I do intentionally a
“Spill” a little to heat the exterior and it blooms very fast.

One word. Trangia. Never bettered. Anything that deviates from that format is just trying to look different for the sake of sales rather than accepting that the right design was pretty much nailed in the 1950s.

Totally agree - There's actually not a whole lot of science around the gasification of wick'd ethanol other than flashpoint, ambient air temperature and pressure inside and outside the wicking area... The science was pretty much settled in the 1800's, long before the invention of the Trangia burner.

It's not the lightest, or the most fuel efficient, but when you take a big picture view of things rather than one facet in isolation it is the best, most versatile alcohol stove available.

I had one of these useless stoves from around 7 years ago and I found exactly what you did. In fact the shop that sold it to me said you can hold your pot over the flame while it primes until it blooms... well F that! It was almost useless outside in the slightest breeze and a windscreen around it.
I ended up pricking the holes about 3 times bigger and also wired a flat wick around the outside. THEN I got fast primes and boil times.
I still had the problem of getting unused fuel back in the bottle and putting the flame out. I solved this by taking a small cheap tin cup...About 200ml that I got with a camp cook set I'd never use...plonked the cup over it to put it out then upended the whole lot so it drained into the cup...then poured it back in the bottle....such a fuss 😒
All in all...poor performance and way too much fuss. I swapped to an evernew and cross stand which I could use with far less fuel and was easier to empty. In fact I rarely had to put it out and empty it unless in emergency
I ended up junking it for a better stove as it was too much hassle.

Hey, i actually have that stove, as well as the triad. I know there was a recall on the earlier decagon model, but I’m not sure what the change was. When i use mine, i don’t fill completely to the top, just up to where it sits slightly higher than the inner hole. Maybe give that a shot, and see how that works for you. I’ve actually found it fairly easy to blow out, and if you use the edge of the base, it makes a good “spout” to reclaim unused alcohol, back into your storage container. I can take a short video, or snap a pic if that doesn’t make sense the way I’m explaining. Thanks for your videos!

It makes you wonder what testing if any was done before the decision was made to manufacture it. Takes too long to bloom, too much fuel, too much flame in the wrong places and too much money for all of those problems. My 15 year old tuna and soda can stove works better. Nice vid. Thanks for the warning.

First question: Could they mean to fill the _internal chamber_ completely, up to the level of the hole in the center? Don't fill the dish shaped cavity in the top. I think it needs to have headspace between the jets and the surface of the fuel. That's about 1 1/2 oz., from watching what you put in. That's why it didn't spurt all over the second time -- you didn't fill the top cavity that time, or not as high. That means that when the alcohol vapors rise to the jets, there's air space and the vapor doesn't shove fuel out the jets because of a lack of headspace.
Second question: Can you find a small, flat tin or pan a little bigger than the base and about half an inch high? Try setting the stove in that pan, put only one ounce of fuel in the stove, but put about 10ml in the pan at the base? Try lighting the pan at the bottom first. Flames will rise up the sides and heat the stove up more effectively, so vapor forms and comes out of the jets. The priming pan flames will ignite the stove as the vapors get stronger. Don't light the center well of the stove unless the priming pan goes out and the stove hasn't primed or ignited. I think the reason priming is so slow is because most of the heat is going UP. So the stove itself barely gets hot, as the flame is almost entirely over the top of the stove. The priming pan allows the walls of the stove to get heated directly.
Open bathtub stoves generally have a deep, wide top funnel or cavity. The flames are down far enough inside to heat the metal of the stove and boil the fuel under the jets. With this stove, that little divot at the top isn't deep enough to do that, so the heat all goes up and gets the stove barely warm. You need all that fuel to shorten the head space so the vapors will fill it with enough pressure to get out of the jets in a high enough concentration to burn. Too big a headspace, and the stove can't get hot enough to get the vapor pressure up high enough. Hence the external priming pan. I'd be curious how that works.

15:11 maybe in the one-ounce fill configuration, (Like you've demonstrated before) to get it to rapidly blossom, tie a cotton rope, string, or rag, around the lower part of the can, spill some fuel on the primer rope-string-or rag ignite it and place the pot on top, and wait for a bloom! you'd be using the primer heat to heat both the pot (not wasting fuel) and priming the stove!
I know you don't like me because I think outside the box, which "Down Arkansaw, they don't like" but something useful may still be learned!!!
If on a tipped surface, "Don't over-fill" that is, don't fill so much as to cover the lowest pilot hole. Maybe with the rope string or rag wrapped around the bottom of the stove to capture some of the overspill, with a pot on top, ya might get that overflow spill to prime the bloom?
As the stove specialist, I think it is your job, not just to show the weak mode of operation, but to get the best and strongest performance possible, even in a lesser mode. Sometime ya need to make the best ya can with what ya got, not just take and accept a fail as the total performance of a device. It's like with a child that's not performing well, sometimes ya need to work with them, to help them to build better performance. Sometimes an object or a particular lack of understanding prevents their bloom, and ya help them past that, and suddenly they understand, and ya can't hold them back, they just move forward like crazy, and really motivated. I've seen it, I've done it, and so can you. Give it a try and see, and don't give up. The rewards can be tremendous.
    Regards!

hi ernie, you can shorten the priming time significantly and not have to fill it up if you use a doughnut of carbon felt around the base of the stove. just drop some alcohol onto the felt when you put in your fuel and light it up, it heats it via the outside wall instead of from the center well.
but after all that, it doesn't change my opinion of the stove, it's still a total waste of money and i strongly advise anyone who was thinking of getting one to keep well away from it. it is a piece of expensive rubbish!
thanks for your review :) neil

Another good gear review Dr. Ernie. I don't have the Vargo Decagon, but do have the Vargo Hexagon Alcohol Converter Stove. Same issues with priming and spitting out fuel at times. Also my least favorite alcohol stove and probably somewhat dangerous. The stand to convert the hexagon wood stove is very unstable. So far nothing beats the Toaks Siphon Alcohol Burner (quick to prime, easy to put out, and no problem reclaiming unused fuel). Thanks for another entertaining and informative video. I bought the Toaks Siphon Burner because of your review and am totally happy with it.

Some comments based on extensive use of this stove… I think my instructions said to fill it to the “weld line” and to extinguish, just blow it out like a candle . Never owned a stove that you can blow out like a candle but its that easy. I have also used this stove with the Trangia storm cooker 27 and it really performs well it that setup. I purposely spill fuel around the base onto some carbon felt to speed up the prime, kinda like the Svea 123.

  • @MrFowl

I imagine this would work really well if you added a MBD style wick around the base (near the seam) to help with the bloom. I bet you wouldn't need to fill it all the way up then too.
Edit: That said... Just buy a MBD stove! It primes in 10 seconds, it's easier to put out, better flame pattern, faster boil, easier to get fuel back in the bottle, and if you need to modify it anyways, a homemade MBD style stove is basically free! ...what the heck were they thinking?

i added a thin strip of carbon felt to the bottom held on my some thing wire wrapped around the felt. I put 1 oz of fuel in and a few drops around the carbon felt. light the felt and it primes better/faster
next i added foil on the bottom to cover the precut holes for if i spill out any fuel when i get fuel on the carbon felt.
Its not the best stove but it works really well with my evernew pans not my tall mug style pots.

Unlike brass or aluminum, titanium doesn’t transfer heat to the entire stove. The small flame is concentrated at the very center and does not heat up the sides to vaporize the fuel to ignite it. I would suggest after filling it up I would put an additional alcohol on the outside ring, with that lit and creating heat I believe this stove would prime faster.
I have a Vargo titanium triad. In order to get that to prime quickly I use a small aluminum cap that I cut down and putting a few drops of alcohol in it and light it before I ignite the fuel in the stove. This protocol works very well.

As a stove enthusiast i have pulled up the Vargo website a number of times and to date have not pulled the trigger on any of their stove options. They just do not work as well as other stoves/burners do (as per my own obsessive research and props to Hiram Cook ) and those other stoves usually cost less and require less fuel to operate. I was really looking at the converter and Hexagon wood stove combo. I went against these options because the converter stove suffered the same flaws as the decagon. The Hexagon wood stove just housed the wood and didn't offer any secondary burn like the Bushbuddy, four dog or Toaks. Shame. Vargo does make a great fuel bottle (my go to) and I have also considered their pocket bellow.

  • @macplus3339
    @macplus3339 Год назад

Perhaps it's a heat transfer issue. It seems that there isn't enough metal in contact with the fuel to make the fuel boil quickly. It looks to me that there could be an air pocket between the flame in the center and the sides causing the heat to travel across the top and down the sides before any heat transfer occurs. A simple fix might be as easy as putting a tube made from a soda like you would in a DIY soda can stove that sticks out and above the fill line but not higher than the top of the stove to facilitate a faster heat transfer. You could also trim it to the fill level to eliminate having to bring a measuring container. I would scare a line at the fill opening at the full level anyway for the same reason.

  • @trentnichols5075

I have to think that with a easy fix could make this stove a favorite if even your higher standards. I don’t mean that sarcastically, I just know that you have used an insane amount of stoves so you know what your business when you take about.
I know you have used some of Tinnie’s mini bull designs. So if you wrap on some fiberglass wicking or maybe carbon felt to heat up the outside of the stove I have to think that it will bloom a lot faster even with a ounce of fuel.
I hope you see this message and try it out.

I have been using this stove: ruclips.net/video/jgsTj9FOdpo/видео.html for 15 years. Cheapest, lightest way to boil water with alcohol. I use a wide pot (Evernew 1.3 liter) and a titanium windscreen. I use a heat reflector under the stove cut from an aluminum oven liner, which also prevents scorching the surface underneath. It requires that you practice with fuel (and water) quantity to achieve the best performance. Having been a Trangia owner, and having done many experiments with the stove, I have discontinued its use because it is heavy relative to the Supercat, and wastes fuel in that the entire reservoir of fuel must be brought to a certain heat before the stove blooms, which takes time as well. It also requires a pot stand, adding unnecessary weight. Once extinguished after use, the hot alcohol in the reservoir continues to evaporate until the stove cools enough to screw the cap on.
For short trips, it's fine, but the only advantage it has over the Supercat is that it has an adjustable simmer. If one plans on simmering while hiking, it would be much less of a hassle to use a pressurized gas canister stove. They are not without drawbacks, either.
One thing about carrying alcohol: if one wishes to start a wood fire, the accelerant is right at hand.
Hiram Cook's channel is among the best for information on alcohol (and wood) stoves.
Oh, simmer hack: use an empty tealight candle tin, placed in the Supercat, filled to overflowing, to achieve a simmer. It's most effective in cooler temperatures.
Experiment. That's half the fun, right? Tinker is my trail name.

Dangerous alcohol stove? Perhaps a bit more so than many others. Safer because wise base makes it top-free, while others tip easily (fancy feast, juice can, etc.).
Worst alcohol stove? . . . Maybe, maybe not. But definitely one of the worst. All Vargo stoves seem to be the same : 1) Slow blooming, 2) Pretty good (not great) boil times, and 3) Very, very efficient with fuel.

Might not be a quick fire, but still a low consumption efficient food heater to conserve fuel!. Ya can't always have just what ya want, and maybe make good use from an unexpected use method!

Anyone heard of or used the Etowah 2 stove? The videos here are limited on its use for boil and simmer cooking. Maybe a review on that stove if you would please.
    Thanks!

The Triad bloom more fast if you put a small lid, bottle cap... under for pre-heat.
For simmering, look at "BS 1.1 Adjustable flame stove", simmer well but is not fast to boil,
      8-12 min for 2 cups.
I think Ernie made a video about this model, ind the end of last year.
Other review channel has a series of videos about the "Etowah 2".

What's the best alcohol stove? If first times alcohol stoves. Want to buy some for my grand kids!( teens) I have seen all your videos and want to make sure I don't have to buy them another one later. Thanks.

    • @camojoe83
      @camojoe83 3 года назад

You need to look into making them from cans with your grand kids. They'll like that way better.

    • @camojoe83
      @camojoe83 3 года назад

But if I had to suggest some, I'd suggest the classic Trangia, the Evernew DX setup is a very nice piece of kit, but pricey. I love mine tho.. the Toaks Siphon isnt a bad one, either, but it needs a stand..
Seriously tho, look into making some. Go check out Tetkoba here on RUclips and look at the CHS Universal especially, but all of them in general.

    • @maxlutz3674
      @maxlutz3674 3 года назад

I second the Trangia. If you only buy the stove, get a pot stand too.
I kind of grew fond of the fancy feast stoves. They are lightweight, easily made and perform very well. They require a separate fuel bottle. I can live with that.
If you take the time to make one of the fancy feast stoves with them that might be way cooler. You can still buy one later.
You also might think in lines of a cooking system: a mug, a stove that nests into it and maybe a spoon and collapsable cup.

I haven't used a decagon stove but I use and love the vargo converter stove. It's annoying to constantly see you tubers try to bring the burner to a bloom in that manner which is not how they function. Also I can just blow out the converter stove but be careful or you might remove your eye brows. I've had the ever popular trangia "fart" and I think that is one of the associated risks with alcohol stoves

I have a regret about one particular brand of backpacking stoves that I have purchased. I purchased a alcohol stove from a company , tried it , what a disappointment , nothing but junk. So I got another one ( Different one ) from the same company , again junk. To make a long story short I got everyone of their alcohol stoves and they are all junk. Other items they have in titanium are really good but the stoves from Vargo are not worth anything but as items to fill the back of the junk drawer. Way better off with the Tragias , Evernews , Goshawks , Toaks or even home made stoves. Just my opinion and no one else's.

It’s a good little stove when you know how to use it.
JB weld some 10mm fire rope around the base under the jets.
Put 1oz of fuel in and a few drops on to the rope.
    Then review it again.
Pour your boiled water over your coffee and use your empty pot to extinguish the stove.
Empty the fuel out of the jets only.
I then relight the stove to dry it out completely.
    Hope that helps ;-)
