Thank you so much for this video!! I have been searching for details like this to help me get my garden bed and lawncare under control. 1000x thank you!
You're very welcome. So glad it helps. Appreciate ya watching.
Thank you so much. My re-mulching project is going to be a nightmare, but I’m going to get through it, and keep up with it like you advised. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
You got this! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Good luck!
I've never been disappointed with the Spectracide products as well. Great tips as always brother! 🤜🤛. I still need to work on making a bed for the hostas around the side of the house. I'd definitely say your grass doesn't look too shabby at all!
Always works. Thanks brother. Appreciate ya tuning in and commenting as always.
Awesome timing for this video. I just renovated our front flower bed and made it bigger and added bushes. Actually just used that product yesterday to kill off the grass and weeds before laying down the fabric and mulch.
Saweet. Nice call on the expansion. Always worth having more bed space and less grass in my opinion. Thanks so much for watching.
I am one who let my bed get out of hand... sacrificed a few plants, but this is the same thing I did to get it back. Excellent video!
Happens to the best of us buddy. Thanks so much. Appreciate ya chiming in.
I've had major problems with my mulched area. Thanks for the tip!
You bet. Hope it helps. Thanks for watching.
Looking good! Good call on not putting the fabric under the mulch. My beds have it from a previous owner and it is a pain when it starts deteriorating!
Thanks buddy. Good to know. If the mulch does its job and weeds are zapped, weed fabric is a waste. 👊👊
Well, this was for me. I have a rock area by my drive way and when the weeds come up I pull them. If I can get them before they get un slightly I think I will go this route instead. Thanks Trevor 😊
👍👍 awesome. Glad this helps. I think you’ll prefer this route for sure. Thanks so much for watching.
great information. I always follow and learn what you say. It does work.
Thank you. That’s great to hear. Glad I’m able to help. Appreciate your support.
This year I'm trying rubber mulch in my planting beds.. I'm tired of spraying weeds, pulling weeds etc..
Really nice yard!
Awesome. Let me know how that goes. Appreciate you!
Love your energy and lawn my man, looking good brother 💪 👌 🙌 🇺🇸💥
Thanks so much. Appreciate that. 👊👊🙌🙌
Great advice and tips Travis Thanks for sharing
Thank ya buddy. Hope you're well!
Yep...that stuff works great. I use the battery powered wand though, then use the big refill. Batteries last a long time. When I spray the few weeds that pop up occasionally, I talk to them, and tell them to enjoy the drink. Yard looks great BTW.
Haha, I like your style. I may need to get the battery one next time. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Side note: be careful not to step where you sprayed then step in the grass. Not that I’ve ever done that 🤦🏼♂️
Yup. Great advice! No bueno. Appreciate ya watching and adding that. 👊
I thought I had fungus... nope... walked through my glyphosate..
Bummer 🤦♂️

Great advice as usual! Just dug out rock garden this week so I’ll have to be on the look out for weeds and grass as I turn it into a mulch bed.
Thank ya. For sure. You’ll wanna keep an eye out. It can happen fast if you’re not on top of it. Good luck the rest of the way on your project.
Is this product a danger to bushes or trees?
Yes, you want to keep it off anything that you don’t want damaged.
That’s a beautiful backyard!!! The retaining wall🔥
Thank you. Much appreciated. Thanks for watching. 👊👊
Great tips..the trick is to stay on top of it.. I try and take a stroll around the yard every evening to keep the weeds at bay...
Got to. It gets outta control fast. Thanks brother!
Glad I came across your channel! I'm in NWA!
Awesome. Same here! No better place in the state. Appreciate ya watching!
i have been a professional lawn jockey for decades and I love your lawn, especially the front, freaking perfect, less is more! I actually agree with everything you said in this video, wow, extremely rare. Best point made... ONLY use weed tarp under rocks. Weed tarp is evil!
Much appreciated. Thank you. Glad to have ya here on the channel! 👊👊
@@BudgetLawns safe to spray if you have banana and small palms planted in your beds? Or will this hurt all plants?
@@allboutthemojo Use with caution around desirable plants. Too much overspray can harm or kill them.

From Central AR nice looking lawn. Newly sodded yard this March and am working on it. Watered and fertilized but no weed killer. Have hand pulled some crabgrass and weeds. Starting to get it in shape. Mow once a week. Thanks for all the tips.

Never and I repeat, never let weeds get out of control. A little time now saves a lot more time in the future. I do this as well, but sometimes I'm lazy and let the weeds get slightly out of control and I pay for it.

☀Glad to hear I'm not the only one that goes "pew, pew, pew" when pulling the trigger. 😎 I use the same Spectracide killer. Works great, especially on Spurge in my rocks. Found the batter powered trigger on the same bottle for like $8 at Lowe's. Can't beat it. Great video!!🌞

I just mulched an existing bed in my parents' Crowne Zoysia yard. I scalped the grass in the bed first, then put two layers of cardboard down and about 3-4 inches of mulch, and dug a 6 inch straight edge around the perimeter to hopefully keep those Zoysia rhizomes from invading. I am worried the grass will come up through the plants that were already in the bed since I had to leave a gap in the mulch around the base of each one, but I am hoping I can keep it under control so my parents can enjoy it for years to come! We also have really prolific nutsedge in our area so I'm praying the cardboard and mulch will be able to smother enough of it so I can manage it. Any pointers are welcome!
Also, great video!
Sounds like you’ve done a solid job. Now it’s just a bit of a waiting game. Any zoysia or sedges you see come through just zap em like in this video. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
I need to get some of this !!! My back is killing me from it

Please make a video on how you get those edges and how you maintain them?
👍👍 I’ll try to work on one for ya. Appreciate ya watching.
When i put pre emergent in the yard i put it in the beds also
Beautiful Lyn, great job! Is it OK to do this in the backyard where I have dogs?
Thank you. I have a 60lb dog that walks through all of this. Messes the mulch up a bit but that’s ok in the long run. Thanks for watching.
Nice job creating a gap between the lawn and the beds. How did you do that exactly? What stops the runners from the lawn reaching into the beds?
Thank you. Just pushed the mulch back and edge with a string trimmer like I would against concrete. Over time, the edge gets more defined. Some runners make it through but that's just part of it. Bermuda will find its way anywhere. Thanks for watching.
One product that really helps is Preen. I spread it 3-4 times per year, and it keeps the weeds and grasses way down in the mulched areas so I need to spray herbicides even less. It is a pre-emergent, so if you've already got weeds it doesn't help. But once you clear them out, Preen helps to prevent new weeds from popping up.
Great feedback. These are the weeds and grasses that broke through the Preen. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for this video and your tips! I don't think I've ever come across a video where every comment has gotten a response. I'm sure your viewers appreciated that but it was also nice to see! I know people have lives and get busy but still, you responded to all of your comments, that's so nice.
Even though I saw this asked a few times, I still wanted to clarify and make sure. Do you just keep spraying the weeds that grow in mulch until they die or better to pull the weeds and then spray the area to prevent it from coming back? Also should you pull it once it dies and still spray after you pull the dead weed out or just pull it out, no spray? sorry that's a lot
Appreciate that. Try to do my best to help folks.
Once I spray it once, it's usually done for. It'll die and I just leave it there. I only spray the ones that are difficult to pull, like bermuda. If it's easy to pull it, I'd rather do that than spray. But bermudagrass invading mulch is hard to pull. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching!
Great video! Wondering your thoughts on mulch dye.
Fresh mulch every other year or so is my preferred method. Not a fan of dealing with the dye.
Nice yard !
Thank you!
Lay down some preen on those mulch beds works like a dream
Did that last year. Worked great. I’m planting at some point this spring so I’m holding off on anything for now. Thanks for watching.
Which one ? Barricade ?
Preen is the product name. Works great. Kinda pricey.
Good vid!

You got some serious drainage system back there
Works like a charm. Thanks for watching and the comments.
I bought a craftsman electric sprayer that can get screwed on to the weed killer bottle and it makes killing the weeds a lot easier!!! That is my go to killer too
That's a great idea. Thanks so much for watching and sharing.
Thanks

Beautiful yard bro.. I love the split with the concrete bricks. Amazing
Thanks man. Appreciate that. Wasn't crazy about it when we decided to build the house, but it really has turned into a nice feature. Gives the lawn some character and not just flat grass. Thanks again!
I love your content and your outspoken views when it comes to grass. You don't sugar coat nothing and that's the way it should be. You real brother.....waiting on the next video.

Hiya Travis!…cultural practices and bam!…you get the swag!!👏👏👏👍…lookin sweet !☮️👑
It’s that easy brother. 👊👊👍👍 appreciate you! Have a great week!
You could run an edger around your bermuda if you don't want it to spread. It should chop the underground and above ground runners so thy don't spread.
For sure, that helps. I edge mine deep with a string trimmer. Still get some that sneak through but not too bad. Appreciate ya watching and adding that.
Looks great! But how close can you spray in the mulched area if you have shrubs and flowers?
Thanks
Thank you. You want to keep the spray off any plants that you don’t want harmed. Appreciate ya watching.
The gravel by the AC unit. Is that because of the condensate that enters the yard? I have a spot in my back yard that gets a muddy mess. Looking for ideas to fix this.
Kinda sorta. I just really wanted a dry creak bed as an added lawn feature. It also helps keep rain water from coming off the hillside and reaching the house. It's helped with drainage while being an empty out for the AC drain. Thanks for watching and the question.
Make sense. Hit em hard and hit ‘em all the time! Great advise! Thanks!
Works like a charm. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
If you keep the lawn at 3-31/2” you won’t get as many weeds and you won’t have to mow as often. You can get it to look as good as yours does now.
Bermudagrass develops a thicker turf less likely to have weed pressure when mowed at an inch or less. You are right for many other turf types. Thanks so much for watching.
Thanks for the tips! One quick question though -- Wouldn't it be wise to wear some protective gloves to avoid getting the Spectracide on your skin?
For sure. I really should be. I need to get better at that. Appreciate ya watching and reminding me. Thank you.
Great advice, neighbor! Would you shy away from using this in a flower bed?
Thank ya. No, I will be using it when the beds are full of plants. You just have to be a little more cautious around the ones you don't want to kill. Appreciate ya watching as always!
I love Bermuda grass but I hate it!!! Its tough and loves to creep into the beds. How do you get rid of the grass and weeds in existing flower beds without killing your shribs and flowers though?
Hand pulling and digging is definitely the safest way. Once these beds are full, they shouldn’t get too many weeds in em. That’s the plan at least. Thanks for watching.
Great video but what do you do when you are trying to keep weed or grass out of the mulch in your flowerbeds
Thanks, I just stay on top of killing them. Gotta be diligent about it before it gets outta hand.
i have bermuda crossing over into the mulched circle around my trees. if I spray the bermuda about two feet from the base of my tree, will the tree be ok you think?
I’m would definitely read the label for that. I’m not sure what it says regarding trees as I’ve never sprayed around one. Sorry. Thanks for watching.
Question? I agree totally but what if you want to plant 🪴 something how long do you wait to ensure the herbicide doesn’t kill whatever plant?
I’d wait at least 2 or 3 weeks. The product is foliar so it doesn’t really work unless it gets on a plant’s leaves. The label will have guidelines for this as well. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns thanks and I appreciate your knowledge for the products to use that is commonly available in big box stores as well as techniques to apply to improve the appearance of my lawn. Keep up the good work. A dedicated budget lawn subscriber viewer.

Great video. I have HUGE perennial beds that I plan to simplify. As much as I love all the flowers, I'm not able to keep up with it all due to health problems. I plan to keep the many different kinds of ground cover. You said that you're planning to cover the mulch with ground cover. How do you prevent grass growing in ground cover? thank you in advance.
Thank you. Maintaining the weed and grass free mulch for some time is a start. To make sure youre planting the plants without anything else trying to invade. After that, the heavy ground cover will do its job to crowd everything else out from coming in. That’s the goal at least. Hope this helps. Thanks again.
I have a question, Do you have any videos on putting in a stone and rock walkway?
This is the closest I’ve got.

I put flagstones right on the grass and mow right over them …..every once in a while I edge them to keep them from being buried. Much easier than mulch or gravel paths.
Great idea. I have some like that in my front yard and do the same thing. The river pebble path in the back is to control the water to the street instead of toward the house. Works like a charm. Thanks for watching.
I have predominantly KBG which I assume is spreading into my mulch beds. Normally I just try to pull sprouts but always seem to get more later on. Does weed and grass killer actually kill that particular grass plant as a whole or just the sprout and some of the root rhizome?
I’ve had luck killing the whole thing. It’s a battle with grasses that spread by themselves tho. As soon as you stop it in one spot, it’ll find its way in in another. Just gotta stay on top of it. Thanks for watching.
Ok will do
👍👍
I would like to plant some plants and flowers in my beds that currently have just mulch and some shrubs. Can I use the grass and weed killer but still be able to plant things like hostas, hydrangeas, and perennial flowers without the weed and grass killer hurting what I DO want in my beds?
Good question. You don't want any of the product at all to get on the plants. It could harm them or kill them. If you do spray before you plant, I would wait 2-3 weeks before planting. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Awesome
👊👊
Yeah beds are my downfall and I use the same stuff you do, just gotta do it more frequently
They’re kinda outta sight outta mind some times. This stuff is good. Thanks buddy. Appreciate ya.
I have ground ivy growing all around my rose bush garden and I'd like to kill it without harming the bushes. Any suggestions?
I’d be manually removing as much by hand close to the rose bushes. If you spray to kill anything, just ensure no spray drifts onto your bushes.
Hating on your rotary mowed lawn! Looking fantastic!
Thanks buddy. Ain’t gonna lie, I’m kinda of enjoying it. 👊👊
@@BudgetLawns if I could have pulled that look off the 1st year at my house, I probably wouldn’t have a reel mower haha
Haha. The blade needs a new edge. That mower has been beat up on this new lawn.
Hello, question from a noobie. When these weeds/grasses in the mulch bed die, do they come back? Or are the permanently dead? And once they die, can I pull them out or will that cause issues?
They don’t come back. New ones may appear tho. I just leave them there. They’ll decompose and disappear.
I just did a couple of flower beds with this last week, do you pull the grass after the 7 days or do you apply a second application before you remove the Thatch and debries? looks like it started to kill but I still see some green:( I really want to get it all out. Thanks for the video, looks really good.
Thank you. Just keep at it and you'll get there! I don't pull anything. Just zap it till it dies and leave it.

I shall. Thank you for your reply. have a great weekend.
Would this product affect new seeding? I’m planning to renovate my lawn soon and I’ve learned I should kill the weeds b4 I start seeding.
Lots of folks will blast their lawns with a product like this before renovating. I don’t have first hand experience but from what I hear these chemicals can stay in the soil for some time but shouldn’t effect your seeding as the product works through the leaves. However you may want to plan to use it a few weeks before seeding. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

I leave it there and it’ll break down over time. Thanks for watching.

Quick question. I have a dog that pretty much stays inside, but I let out once or twice a day. How do you handle with pets? Also what mulch did you use? Looks good!
If I do a full broadcast spray on my lawn, I keep her off for 24-48 hours. For spot treating like this, I keep up off until the spots are dry. She hasn’t ever shown interest in messing with it so just keep an eye on your dog. I got about 2-3 inches deep on mulch. When I plant, I’ll add a little later of fresh stuff. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
Great lawn! Any suggestion on erradicating nutsedge?? I have an area that is just so hard to get rid off. I've been using Roundup concentrate, diluting with white vinager instead of water. Seems to work on the surface but always comes back. This is going on for years. Also, for your safety and privacy, please cover up your license plate. 🙏🏼
Thank you. Nutsedege really thrives in moist areas. First thing is to improve drainage if possible. Years ago, I had good results using Spectracide Weed Stop For Lawn Plus Cragrass Killer on some nutsedge at my old house. Truthfully though, I go waaay against the grain and pick it like everyone says not to do. If you pick it regularly before the plants get too mature, they'll eventually give up the fight due to lack of nutrients from regular picking. You have to be diligent about it though. And thank you for your concern. I realize it's a good practice, but let's be real, if someone really wanted to know more about me, the internet makes it way too easy to do so. I used to cover my plate, but I don't think it makes a difference anymore with all the resources available out there. Plates are public records anyway so they're not hard to get info on. Thanks again. Appreciate you.
@Budget Lawns Thank you for taking the time to respond. I will get that product and also begin the picking process in hopes of getting rid of these weeds. Have a great day!
can you spray this stuff around trees and bushes or will it damage them as well?
You should use caution around desirable plants. It can harm or kill them if too much spray gets on them. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
I have some grass growing in my mulch bed where I have some flower. If I spray the grass it won't kill the flowers will it?
The best option close to flowers is manual pulling. If you do spray, just make sure you don't get any overspray onto your flowers or it could kill them.
@Budget Lawns ok thanks for your help. This is a first time for me doing this
What if you have plants and an dwarf japanese maple in the mulch bed? Never thought of putting down a weed barrier fabric.
You will want to use more caution around the plants you don't want to harm. I wouldn't use a weed fabric. If you control the weeds when you see them and keep a good layer of mulch, it'll do the trick for you. I've heard nothing but bad things about weed fabric deteriorating under the mulch. Under the rocks is a different story because there are lots of gaps for seeds, sun, and air to get through for weeds to pop up. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
@@BudgetLawns appreciate the reply!
Can you use that in mulch around a tree? Or will it kill the tree? I got some grass coming through the mulch. Or better to dig it out and replace with a thick layer each time?
If your tree is established you’d be fine. If it’s new I would dig out. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns had it about a year. Thx
Can you spray this down on a new bed before adding plants? Or will it harm newly planted shrubs and trees?
I would wait at least 2 or 3 weeks before planting after spraying. Thanks for watching.
Do I still spray the weeds and grass even if k have plants in my mulch bed
You can but you need to be careful not to spray your plants. The product could harm or kill them. I’d pull the weeds and spray the grass. Weeds are easier to pull by hand than grass, especially Bermuda. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Do you use weed barrier/fabric under the mulch?
No. Only under rock.
Beautiful lawn! But where is the landscaping?
Thank you. New construction house with a new lawn takes time. Planting begins this season. Appreciate ya watching.
What about when you gave ground cover, bushes, crepe myrtle trees and other plants you want to keep. Won't the weed and grass killer and/or vegetation killer kill those plants as well if its not selective?
Yup. You would want to be very careful. However, part of the ground cover and bushes job is to prevent weeds as well. Once all of its filled in with those, I’ll just be handpicking what I see. Thanks for watching.
what does weed and grass killer do to the plants and flowers in the bed but not sprayed
As long as you don’t get the product on them you should be fine
If Weed & Grass killer is used, are you able to plant flowers in the bed afterwards? Thanks!!!!
Yes, I have since planted 38 plants in a portion of this mulch and haven't changed my process. I do pick most weeds to begin with, but will use a herbicide on the most stubborn. I just make sure to be careful around plants and make sure I don't get overspray on them. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns Excellent! I want to plant Lavender and Marigold's in this area after.
Great advice! Is it possible to have a mulch bed like that and kill weed and grass and still have a plant in there? Sorry if that’s a dumb question 🤷🏽♀️
Thank you.
Yes it is. I’ll be planting there this spring. Just have to be careful not to spray any desirable plants as the product could harm or kill them if too much is sprayed on them. Also don’t want to spray within a few weeks of planting. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns thank you! I was scared that it would harm the soil to a point that nothing could grow there. This is SO helpful.
