Changsha 2024 Walking Tour: Journey Through China's Most 'Up-and-Coming' City

- Dear friends, it’s been a long time since I posted a video of my walking tour in Changsha.
The video of this Changsha trip includes snowy days, cloudy days and sunny days. I hope you can feel the beauty of Changsha from different weathers.

Changsha has long been famous for its millennia-old history and its associations with chairman Mao. But now the capital of Hunan province is on the verge of an avant-garde transformation.
Last year, Changsha was selected as a national pilot city for youth development. After nearly a year, Changsha has achieved the following results.
High net talent inflow rate
In recent years, Changsha has ranked among the top three cities in China in terms of net inflow of high-end talented people. Data shows that Changsha is becoming the first choice for young people to work and live.
At the end of 2022, the total permanent population of Changsha was 10,420,600, an increase of 1.8% from the end of last year, with a population increase of 181,300.
Changsha’s population growth ranked first among the 1-trillion-yuan GDP cities, surpassing Hangzhou, Hefei, Wuhan, and Chengdu, ranking first among the central provincial capitals.
Recently, DT Finance and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences jointly released the “Insight Report on the New Needs of Young People Choosing Cities” on RED, which showed that Changsha is the most recommended city among the top 20 livable cities in 2023.
Why is Changsha so popular with young people?
Great attraction for young people
In addition, Changsha is also a famous “capital of construction machinery” and has seven advantageous industries with a market value of over 100 billion yuan, including biomedicine. Last year, Changsha’s GDP growth rate reached 4.5%, ranking first among the 24 1-trillion-yuan GDP cities.
Changsha is a city that not only offers ample opportunities for growth and development, but also provides a great living environment for young people to settle down.
Changsha is also known for its low housing prices, ranking 22nd among 30 provincial capitals and municipalities, and the ratio of housing prices to income is kept below 7. By the end of 2025, Changsha plans to build no less than 10,000 public rental houses and no less than 150,000 affordable rental houses.
Changsha has also established a “15-minute quality education circle” and achieved full coverage of elderly care service centers in sub-districts (in villages and towns).
Changsha was selected as the “World Capital of Media Arts”. It boasts a popular new consumer brand, lively night markets and pedestrian streets that stay bustling from dusk till dawn, as well as unique cityscape elements like the “Pink Zebra Crossings” and “Love Traffic Lights” that cater to the preferences of young people.
Behind the economic growth, favorable living conditions, and unique media influences, there are efforts made by Changsha to attract young people.

Finally got a chance to visit, and wow it's a lot of fun here. It may not be as rich as Shanghai, as cultured as Beijing, or as steeped in history as Xi'an, but it has a lot of charm, character, and liveliness that you can't really experience fully until you come in person. I ended up canceling a part of my trip to spend more time in Changsha.

While China's infrastructure is impressive, addressing the wealth gap and urban-rural disparities are pressing issues. Alongside strengthening hard power, there's a need to enhance soft power as well.
Banning Bl drama was a very bad decision for China's soft power. The Untamed had millions of viewers throughout the world and many people tuned into Chinese media after it. Even as a student in the US, many asian Americans and Americans interests in korean soft culture are familiar with The Untamed.

The snowy coat makes the city look so beautiful and aesthetic. And I love that symmetrical avenue of trees at around 3:18:00, it seems like such a nice place to take a stroll to shrug off the stress of a busy day. And from the thumbnail it looks like Changsha has a 'Shibuya crossing' of it's own? Where is it in the video? Can I get the time stamp?
