I have watched quite a number of your reviews and I can somehow sense that this is one of the fewer instances where you are truly impressed. Unfortunately it came exactly two days late for me because I was hesitating between SU-X (after getting an SU-9 Pro recently) and a cheaper version SU-6 and wait for the SU-X to flood the market and the reviews to come in before getting it. Now that I hear such a review from you (whom I esteem highly), I don't really need to hear other reviewers. Looks like I need to put up a relatively new SU-6 for sale.
@@Tharbamar I agree with what your ears hear. I take great pleasure in how you find the right words to describe the performance of devices within the context of your audio ensemble. What is there about the way this DAC is built that goes in a better direction? If I could understand that better, then it would be easier to understand why a SU-X and the A26 / R26 are special. Of course, I am not an electrician, but are certain things more important than others?

You are the first, got a email from shenzen audio about the su x early this year and im so interested of this product. Hope in next time we see a comparison between this and some denafrips and gustard stuff.
After a couple of months of use I think SU-X is getting better every day. These are my comments: by having the option of removing the PCM filters, the 192/24 files sound on another level, the DSD playback is also wonderful, the soundstage is much more holographic and the speakers really disappeared, which challenges the stigma of delta sigma. As noted in other reviews, the implementation of the new 9039 chip by SMSL is superbly good.
Great great review! Can't wait to hear smsl D400 pro review from you and compare to SU-X or D400ex! I borrow a smsl D400 pro from my friend and connect to genelec 8330. It is much much better then 8330 build in dac/ rme adi-2 pro fs r(ess chip). When play "Diana Krall - like someone in love" intro double bass, the finger tapping sound and the bass texture is very detail. Voice is warm and soft. It is a dac let you easy to enjoy music. You are right about we are paying for enjoy music and not only pay for what chip and brand. It is a channel which is fair and not trying to say/sale "hifi" snake oil.
Hey Tharbamar I purchased the Audalytuc AH90 after seeing your excellent recommendation. It’s excellent when using its renderer my question is what would you recommend that has the same or better SQ but with more in room presence sound. Like sitting front row experience. Also maybe more holographic and slightly wider soundstage thanks.

How does this DAC work with your KLH Model 3 speakers? I fell in love with the Gustard Audalytic AH90 and find it's versatility a money saver. An investment in a SU-X is an investment in a fuller presentation. I am wondering if SMSL has a boost in the lower midrange? My ears love the neutrality of the SU-X. but I wonder what is making the SMSL DACs all sound rather warm and full in the mid-bass. This is perhaps one of the best from SMSL in a long time. What a lovely review. The recording at the end is superb.

Sounds airy, smooth, and crystal clear without sibalance. Dynamics seem average which is good for me since I like to relax. Compared with the SU-9 Ultra music track in your earlier review, there's a nice improvement with the SU-X.

This unit looks fantastic. How many db of gain available at the rca outs? I can see in the Vid it was set to XLR, and there was a + 2 db, was that maxed out?

Hi Tharbamar, I been listening to your review for quite sometime. Like the way you describe product and most of all the sound. Currently Im on SMSL VMV D1SE DAC to Wiim Pro along with MF A1. My current setup is fine and to my taste I wish it to be more airy.. Hence I am considering DMP A8 and use the i2s connection since my current dac has it.. Do you think its worth to try or go for DMP A8 along internal DAC? Since you are using the i2s connection because not much HIFI review discuss more on this connection. Thank you in advance.

Hello,y question IS, how do you connect tour player to thé dac‽ Thé only option would bé coaxial ( is2 has mot interest). Not HDMI entry or xlr entry ans coaxial seems to bé thé best option but limited . I don't understand why an is2 in or out when we know sound cannot send from HDMI to is2 then RCA or XLR ( better XLR).
It is very surprising that the author of the review did not compare it with Gustard A26, because in my opinion this DAC is its direct competitor and it is not a fact that Gustard is better, even though it is more expensive.

@@Steve-g4b9x A26 is not a full-fledged streamer. But we're talking about sound. The midrange is the least problematic for playback. But in the reproduction of the low and high frequency ranges lie the main nuances. If they are not there, then the DACs can be considered as similar. With minor differences in the scene.

Accuphase does not have built-in DAC, it's optional. More expensive DAC doesn't mean better sound, sound quality is all depending on how you perceived it and paring components.
Anxious to see a SMSL streaming dac if it has dual linear power supply and akm chips should be a killer And PLEASE offer wireless not just lan internet access
@@jmbuchela5424 Yes wireless as opposed to ethernet plug in only. Offer both like the Eversolo(s) many of us do not have convenient Lan access. My home is set up with a VERY good wireless mesh setup, if that means some HIFI loss of fidelity I'm ok with that but I've found that not to be the case with any streamer I've owned that offers both I could never tell much of a difference between Lan and wireless internet access.
Let's talk about the manufacturing quality of this DAC... I ordered it from China. After it arrived (a month later), it worked for 1.5 weeks. Now, the display backlight is constantly on, but there is no information on the displays. It does not respond to pressing buttons on the remote control, except for turning it on/off. I'm very displeased. Don't take this crap!
What you’re describing is defect in most cases unless you opened the unit without knowing the proper procedure but generally it has one year warranty for it.
I remember a few years back, his review of the Khadas Tone 2 Pro. At that time? "You don't need to spend much money on dacs". Now it's all the guy reviews. "I hope you're having a nice day".
Considered D400EX. Dual AK4499EX. Seemed fantastic. Certainly looks great. Was about to buy it then realised it didn't have the quality of power supply and analogue output stages as SUX. An AKM version of the SUX would indeed be nice. SUX ultra.

Not 'A' Winner, only 'a' next winner, which will be obsolete the day after it is released. No Chifi Product has any longevity, not even six months, like today's crap music.
I prefer SU-10 -- sounds more aggressive and raunchy. This SU-X sounds like when you put a sheet or blanket to cover your speakers while they are playing - so the kids dont phsh in my woofers and tweeters Sounds restrained in the highee zing treble - my ears dont hurt as much and less pressure in my head when i listen to SU- X compared to SU-10 O.G. Version
Hand you heard both in real life? The few reviews that exist reveal that SU-X is more neutral overall with a bass that is quicker, tighter, kind of like the new Topping D90 III. Maybe that's the sound signature of the new 9039 chip.

How would it fit with the SU-9 ultra? I like the screen, the preamplifier function .I don't know if the Topping A90d is that much better for that 200 dollars more. it's all up to you because it will be small improvements if you go up on chain but if you're happy with current set up I would suggest to stay with it, thanks

This is perhaps one of the best from SMSL in a long time. What a lovely review. The recording at the end is superb.
SMSL use toroidal transformers while Topping use SMPS. That explains the quicker-than-natural decay of sound from Topping.

Let's talk about the manufacturing quality of this DAC... I ordered it from China. After it arrived (a month later), it worked for 1.5 weeks. Now, the display backlight is constantly on, but there is no information on the displays. It does not respond to pressing buttons on the remote control, except for turning it on/off.
I'm very displeased. Don't take this crap!
What you’re describing is defect in most cases unless you opened the unit without knowing the proper procedure but generally it has one year warranty for it.

I remember a few years back, his review of the Khadas Tone 2 Pro. At that time? "You don't need to spend much money on dacs". Now it's all the guy reviews. "I hope you're having a nice day".

The point was stated clearly above. The Chinese dac/amps are flying out the end of a fire hose. You're helping that along.

Not much, it just gets slightly warm.

AKM version with silver knob and another name and we have a winner 🙏
Considered D400EX. Dual AK4499EX. Seemed fantastic. Certainly looks great. Was about to buy it then realised it didn't have the quality of power supply and analogue output stages as SUX. An AKM version of the SUX would indeed be nice. SUX ultra.
@@iannowicz4287 Same here, all I wish is a dual AKM design with good linear power supply and good quality parts but WITHOUT build in streamer and analog/R2R pre amp. There is not one out there 🤔

I prefer SU-10 -- sounds more aggressive and raunchy.
This SU-X sounds like when you put a sheet or blanket to cover your speakers while they are playing - so the kids dont phsh in my woofers and tweeters
Sounds restrained in the highee zing treble - my ears dont hurt as much and less pressure in my head when i listen to SU- X compared to SU-10 O.G. Version

The few reviews that exist reveal that SU-X is more neutral overall with a bass that is quicker, tighter, kind of like the new Topping D90 III. Maybe that's the sound signature of the new 9039 chip.

hi, thanks for the recommendation, I bought the SMSL SU-9 Ultra and I'm very happy. I would also like to ask you for advice on the Topping L70 headphone amplifier and preamplifier? How would it fit with the SU-9 ultra? I like the screen, the preamplifier function .I don't know if the Topping A90d is that much better for that 200 dollars more. I don't have demanding headphones except the Beyerdynamic dt 770 of 300ohm. The speakers are Evo 4.2. Thank you very much. it's all up to you because it will be small improvements if you go up on chain but if you're happy with current set up I would suggest to stay with it, thanks
