I've had the 9.5 for 4 months and have about the same mileage on it. I ride mostly in the desert, no wet conditions. The bike has been outstanding. I have put a Fox 36 160 mm on front and a Fox X2 on the rear. The paint has held up very good. Cheers!
I got one 2 weeks ago. Killer bike. I had a YT Decoy and while you give up the zero effort power of the Shimano motor, the power on the Trek is still plenty to get up just about anything. I've also tried a Specialized Levo SL and that bike did not have enough power for me. This this is IMO the sweet spot. Being in the US where e-bikes aren't treated so friendly the stealth factor is key and another reason why I prefer this over a full power bike.
Great review. IVE had a 9.8 for 8 months now and over 1000k riding….. had to have the rear XT cassette replaced but the bike is an amazing ride… love it!
Same buddy, love this bike and to be fair to that TQ motor, mines working as well as the day I got it 👍👊 I genuinely forget it’s an e bike when I ride it
I have a Rise, and although I really like it if I were to buy a new ebike today I'd go for the Exe. The Rise is great but it has a few problems. Backend is a noodle, motor is very loud and cockpit is nowhere as clean as the Exe because of the integrated display. Have fun with the bike, it looks amazing.
If you want to run a mullet set up, try flipping the Mino Link into the high position to raise the BB height, if you want to balance it out even more, run a 160 fork in the front.
Nice review and sweet riding and terrain, looks amazing. I have same bike, about 6 weeks in and 200 miles or so of demanding trail and love the bike as well. I did however not fully get along with same shock, fine on DH jump flow lines, but a but too rough for me on any mixed terrain (roots, rocks). So swapped shock out and went 160 fork up front and bike more comfortable to ride. Amazed dropper still good, mine when stiff and slow mo just three rides in so replaced with longer, more reliable post. For long controller cable, i have mine braided with the dropper cable that keeps it tidy and out of the way. Only thing missing is range extender that I hope to get sometime soon. Other than that, I think Trek killed it with this bike
Thanks for the comments, glad you’re so stoked on the bike also 🤙 Yeah, I have a spare dropper that’s a bit better but waiting for the stock on the fail, it hasn’t so I’m leaving it until it does! The shock is the next thing I want to change. Great minds… 👍
Helpful video! Considering the newer version of this same bike in an alloy frame. General question about e-biking: is electric assist only meant to be used for ascending/climbing or is the motor typically engaged 100% of the time (up and down the trail)? Cheers from the U.S.A.
Thanks for the comment buddy 👍 Great bike for first your first e bike 👌 No the motor/assist only kicks in when it senses power is needed, but you can just switch it off anyway and pedal it without the motor on once at the top of the trail 👍
Thanks for the comment, yes the battery can be removed, although I never have, I presume it can be charged separately also. I’ve met some riders who remove the main battery and just run the range extender… 🤷♂️👍
Good video, eyeing one up myself. Any comments on battery range and what sort of length ride you can expect to get out of it (I know it varies on terrain etc).
Thanks for the comment, range is a weakness unless you’re careful with power, so using the full power will reduce your range a lot, but using the mid power or eco will triple your range. Nowhere near the range or power of a full fat also if you’re used to those 👍
Thanks fellow rider 👍 The pedals are up to you, not included, so you get to choose how wide they are 👍👍 If you mean the width of the cranks/bottom bracket, feels and rides like a normal MTB 👌
since I first saw this bike in a review, I'm in love. its my dreambike and I hope I can afford it some time in the next years. I love the yellow one, but your color looks really nice too. And I gotta say, it looks even sexier with the high rise bar. What can you say about battery life and range? do you have a range extender for longer tours?
The bike is so good, I enjoy it more now over a year on 👌 battery life and range are okay, just depends on how you use the power, I don’t have the range extender as I’m fortunate to have another full fat e bike so I use that whenever range is needed. Compared to a non e bike, you’ll still crush it, but you’ll then forget it is an e bike when sending the trails down 🫡👍
Great video, mate! i have been thinking about the Fuel EXe and one question that came into my mind just now is about the motor activation speed when going through rough terrain and rocky/exposed roots tech areas up hill. How does it activate? There are moments when you let the bike roll and suddenly you need the max traction to climb things. How is it efficiency on such moments? Thanks
It’s a really natural feeling motor, the power is always there, no surging or overrun, feels like you have stronger legs more than a motor 👍 Not that powerful compared to some, but very natural feeling, you’ll forgot it’s an e-bike and just climb easier than normal!
Really really tempted to look into one for my next tax break. I've had my Rail 5 for a good 3 years now, running solely on neglect and it's absolutely great around the usual Lydney / Mallards / Rubber Duck and Ellwood stuff. Only looking at it because I want my wife to get back into riding steeps again, which she's not confident with post pregnancy. Whilst it's great being able to send her Nukeproof Mega down Blackpool Flydown, I don't think she's got the strength to hit that steep chute before the final section on the brakes with a full fat ebike. However, an SL ebike might take the sting out of the climbs, such that she can do at least 5 runs at mallards before she's cooked on the climbs.
Thanks for the comment buddy 👍 I sold the bike a month ago, so had it for almost two years, sold to a mate who is loving it 👌 Great bike, only sold it for funds towards something different 👍

I am concerned reach will be too long for me and I was thinking of doing exactly what you did with the stem and handlebar. Please let me know how you feel about the reach and stack. Thanks.
I’m 6 foot and also have the large 9.7. I just prefer a shorter stem and slightly wider bars so changed them to a 35mm length stem and 800mm wide bars, I prefer the ride and reach feels better for me. Hope this helps 👍

@ForestMountainBiker can you ride the Trek Fuel EXE with motor turned off? does the Trek Fuel EXE also have an app (phone) to change the motor settings? how do you feel about the 50 NM is it enough? have you thought about buying a orbea rise m10 or m20 with 60 NM?
Yeah, can ride just like a normal bike with motor off. You can adjust power on the Trek app also, really easy to use. The 50nm is enough for me, compared to non e bikes it’s still a huge difference. Keen on the Orbea, mates got one and seems similar, great bike also, the Fuel takes to a mullet better I think so that influenced me 👍
@@ForestMountainBiker Thanks! Hi I’ve just purchased the 9.8 xt build, when I turned of the motor I felt it lagged a bit when peddling, have you had this issue at all ? Bike dealer told me that it feels just like a normal bike even without the motor being on.

Compared to the Specialized Kenevo SL this bike is very tiring to ride uphill especially on steeper trails. It has an interesting type of torque and power measurement. The Fuel handles well on the descents. After a ride on a friends Trek I quickly gave it back in favour of my KSL as the uphill was too tiring.
Thanks for your comments and adding balance to the review. I’ve never ridden the KSL so can’t compare the two, and because I’ve spent years climbing on a non e bike, I guess any kind of assistance feels amazing! For me personally the downhill performance of an e bike is more important than the uphill performance, and I realise this is counter intuitive, but again, I’ve spent years putting the effort in with my legs to enjoy a good descent so assistance getting up is more a bonus to allow me to go down more, but the enjoyment of the ride down is the bigger priority, for me at least. To be fair I’m sure the KSL descends well also, I was looking at those but the only one I could find available was the £10k top spec model and the Trek was £3k cheaper so that did help a bit 😂👍

And what about The range? Is the battery big enough for a full day ride? And if the battery is off, can u feel the difference (do u feel that the bike is heavier, etc?)
Range isn’t great compared to bigger battery/motor e bikes, that’s the trade off. Couple of hours of full power shredding, 3000 -4000 feet. You’d need the range extender and keep to mid/eco power only to get a full day riding 👍
The range isn’t that great, and it’s down to you as much as the bike in a way. Can get a range extender. I wouldn’t buy this bike for range and power though, get a full fat for that 👍

Range isn’t great compared to bigger battery/motor e bikes, that’s the trade off. Couple of hours of full power shredding, 3000 -4000 feet. You’d need the range extender and keep to mid/eco power only to get a full day riding 👍
Why does nobody talks about the battery? Its really frustrating. How far can you get with the battery on flats and on ascend
The range isn’t that great, and it’s down to you as much as the bike in a way. Can get a range extender. I wouldn’t buy this bike for range and power though, get a full fat for that 👍
what is the brand of the stem I own the 9.7 also is there a difference between the stock stem and your stem?
It’s a Burgtec enduro mk3 stem. Mine’s 35mm length, the Trek stock stem is 45mm.
@@ForestMountainBiker THANKYOU
How do You like the Code R 's ?
I like them. Take a bit to bed in but once they do they work well 👍
Merci pour votre vidéo 👌 le SCOOT LUMEN arrive 😂
Super vélo, je suis sûr que vous apprécierez 👊
I have the non-e version. Great bike but the paint does chip easy.
Sorry to hear that, I really like the non e Trek Fuel, guess I’ve been lucky with the paint on mine so far!
can you wash the bike with soap and water without the motor short circuiting from water?
Yup, so far no issues 👍
I am curious how quite the bike is while descending? Any rattle noises like the Shimano ep8 ? thanks!
So far quiet both up and down. No rattles 👍
I wish that trek had done an alloy version as well and a slightly bigger battery
They do have a range extender battery but you’ll have to spend more money of course!
@@ForestMountainBiker Yeh $1,000 in New Zealand
@@wgnwheels333 Ouch!
The amount of money they cost I would expect it to be perfect. They are not worth car money
Fair, I went for the second cheapest model, the top spec is twice as much as mine! It is crazy money, the only thing I would say is I enjoy riding my bike way more than driving my car 👍
Which bars?
Spank Vibrocore riser bars 👍
Oh that crash!! I hurt for you.
Not my worst crash but thank you for the concern 👍
Op
👍
I would like to... downgrade from Trek Rail.... but I'm a tall and heavy OLD guy...
afraid to not have enough battery to complete my runs... did you compare it with a FullPower ebike?
I haven’t compared to a full power e bike, sounds you should try the Fuel first if you can, it will be more effort on the Fuel for sure.
Can I ask why you want to downgrade from the Trek Rail?
@@gnarlyification Nice channel name btw 👌 I preferred the light weight/silent motor concept and any motor assistance feels awesome when you’ve pedalled up hills for years! 👍
@@ForestMountainBiker Yeahthat exactly the proposition I am thinking, thanks! But I was actually targetting @Massimo Federici above, who mentions downgrading from the Trek Rail (85Nm)
@@gnarlyification Lol, long day for me already. You still deserve kudos for your channel name. No regrets 😂👊
would be nice with more powerful motor Im sick of pedaling.
Give it another year or two and no doubt there will be lighter and more powerful e bikes 👍
Did you ride 500km in 100hours? Surely you must be averaging more than 5km/hour. Great bike!
Guess I need to go faster! 😅 That’s what the app shows (screenshot on the thumbnail) maybe the 99 hours is how long it’s been turned on for? Good point tho. I’d like to think I average more than 5km/hour on the down bits at least but they say numbers don’t lie…
@@ForestMountainBiker yeah that must be it, I bet you average more. It’s just that Trek usually goes by hours for the maintenance intervals. Bosch ebike app just shows me the km I have done. Not so much the time. I average about 20kmu. Have fun with the bike!
last 5 sec of clip perfect match with tictoc sound ,, dumb way to die,, :"D ps great bike man :)
Yeah, now you say that, perfect match 👌 The bike is awesome
