    The cutscene of Rufus looking out his office window, knowing his death was imminent has always stuck with me. Just his reaction, eerily calm and arms at his side, it feels like he understood that he had played a high-risk game and lost; accepting his fate quite graciously. A true testament to his character: cold, calculative, and tenacious until the very end. Though his screen-time was argumentatively minimal, Rufus will go down as one of my all-time favorite villains of any series.

    It has always bugged me how both Sapphire and Diamond could have easily survived if they attack from anywhere left or right of the cannon.
    Especially Diamond, with the gun fixed in a permanent position it could have attacked Midgar from literally any where and win. For Sapphire, it can just attack anywhere lower than the barrel and destroy the entire city.

    • @Damon242
      @Damon242 8 лет назад +8

      +Ihate You not the case. The weapons are all about protecting the planet - they are the planet's greatest offends. Diamond Weapon was attracted to midgar because they were about to massively draw off of the Lifestream - which further weakens the planet. Diamond Weapon was there to destroy midgar and the sister Ray to stop this from happening, but was simply too late.

      While thats true, sephiroth was giving off by far the greater amount of mako energy where he was at. The weapons was attracted to midgard, but the reason weapons was attacking from that angle was so that they couldn't blast sephiroth who the planet likely knew would absorb all of the energy as he is essentially genova with a different goal at that point the original thing the weapons where made to stop.

    • @Veladus
      @Veladus 8 лет назад +7

      Weapon, all of them, are incredibly powerful but not particularly intelligent. While it's never explicitly stated, a lot of fans theorize that Sephiroth, ever the master manipulator, somehow manipulated them into thinking he was on their side and needed to be protected. Thus Diamond trying to tank the shot.
      Honestly, it's a bit of a plothole that all 5 Weapons didn't immediately make a B-line for Midgar and lay waste to the reactors. Sapphire was the only one who even attacked a reactor despite the fact that they were supposedly awoken because of the reactors siphoning off the lifestream. Which also supports the theory that they were Sephiroth's puppets: they all but abandoned their purpose.
      Speaking of plotholes, it's a minor thing, but it's always bothered me that the Mako cannon shot makes it to the northern crater. Planets aren't flat. The curve of the planet would've sent it off into space.

    You know, I'm rewatching this for my third or so time, and I noticed something. Isn't it very interesting how the Diamond Weapon approached from the direction of the Northern Crater, provoked a response from Shinra, hit only Rufus's office with that massive barrage and DIDN't dodge the projectile, when it clearly detected it in advance? Which just so happened to result in the beam hitting Sephiroth's forcefield, allowing Cloud's team to reach and unalive him.
    Gaia is scary. 100% chill, until 100% Keikaku Doori.

    • @zephyr8072
      @zephyr8072 5 месяцев назад +1

      It was always Shinra's intention to destroy Sephiroth's barrier. That's why they moved the cannon to Midgar, to harness the power of the 7 active reactors. Diamond Weapon just happened to be in the way at the wrong time because the Weapons are mindless and have the strategic capabilities of a tin of Spinach.
      If they just wanted to destroy Diamond Weapon the cannon at Junon could already easily do that.

      And how did he run fast enough to dodge the blast with the explosion?

    • @SirCloudStrife
      @SirCloudStrife 4 года назад

      He didn’t duck. He just covered himself. He woke up on the floor and slid under his desk and hit the emergency escape. He was in horrendous condition, and only stayed conscious purely out of anger. When he got to the safe room he found pain pills to numb himself while he waited for help to arrive. He was hospitalized for a bit and bandaged for a while.

    Salty people hating that Rufus survives in the comments.
    It’s hard to see at first but you can clearly see Rufus just disappear near his desk before the office explodes.
    I heard that there was an escape hatch near the desk for such emergencies, made by his father for his son.
    Apparently, also from what I heard, old Papa Shinra thought it was for losers and filled the escape room with loser signs to mock his son if he ever used it.

      That was written over a decade after the original game, and the problem is that at a writing level it completely ruins what is a powerful character moment for the sake of fanservice. Rufus dissapearing isn't really foreshadowing, just clunky 1997 CGI(this is far from the game's only animation goof)

  • @magicman25103
    @magicman25103 12 лет назад

    if you played the game.. (or watched the video at least) the beam was directed at the northern crater, weapon moving would have had no effect on its course as it wasn't the target, it was caught in the crossfire

    This cutscene insinuates that Sephiroth somehow controlled the WEAPONS after they reawoken. The woke up in response to Meteor. But somepoint after that, they were doing Sephiroth's bidding. Only reason why one would try to tank the Sister Ray shot. And another seemingly hunting down Cloud and his crew. The WEAPONS seem to ignore Sephiroth for anything else.

    • @klockenberg2299
      @klockenberg2299 Год назад +1

      Sephiroth only puts his barrier. That makes WEAPON attack humans instead because the barrier makes him undetectable.

    • @ZentetsukenVII
      @ZentetsukenVII Год назад

      WEAPON wasn’t trying to tank the shot. It came from the crater, it was heading towards Midgar from there. It was incredibly convenient for Shinra. WEAPON was acting on its own accord to protect the planet from threats. Since Sephiroth was shielded, WEAPON went after the next biggest threat.

    • @zephyr8072
      @zephyr8072 5 месяцев назад

      The attempts to justify the Weapons' stupidity are pretty funny, especially when Ruby and Emerald make no attempt to go after Sephiroth after the barrier is downed and instead just sit around like giant lemons.
      And yes I am aware that they were both added as extra bosses in the international release of FFVII, but they are nonetheless canon and established as being about as useful to the protection of the planet as a can of fluorescent orange paint.

  • @Saimeren
    @Saimeren 13 лет назад +3

    So, what I don't understand is this..
    I know that the weapons emerged so they could defend the planet from the new threat (sephiroth) but they couldn't sense Sephiroth due to his shield being up, thus they went on a rampage attacking the next biggest source that was a threat to the planet, being shinera in Junon, and Midgar.
    So when the shield comes down, Sapphire, and Diamond are dead, but why don't Ultimate, Ruby, and Emerald then head to the crator and deal with Sephiroth?

    • @starjunky30043
      @starjunky30043 5 лет назад

      At least from a development perspective, Ruby and Emerald supposedly weren't in the Japanese version, only later included in the US version. As far as Ultimate? Not sure why.

    @Jupshaw00 I love how you delete your post right after you sent it juust in case you were wrong and didn't want other people to see it.
    Shinra has been using maco energy long before Sephiroth became a problem. If the weapons were after all people they would have shown up a long time ago, not just when Sephiroth decided to destroy the planet.

    @Saimeren ?? I didn't lol it was saying the same thing I believe just edited a grammatical error and reposted it.
    Anyway I don't think the weapons would know that the shield is down unless they happened upon it or went back to check, and they seemed more like monsters killing anything in sight really. You do have a point though i forgot that it was right when cloud gave seph the black materia that they awakened.
