Hi Grant, sorry to see you in this predicament.. I m a painter of 45 years, not telling you how to suck eggs, but on alloy wheels we always wipe over with a thinner rag to see if a 1k product has previously been used, The solvent in direct gloss is quite potent compared to a primer which would seal off the substrate. We water base wheels just because you will end up seeing alot of reactions where wheels have previously been done, although taking slightly longer you dont end up in this scenario, or very rarely.
Yep just didn’t think of it, I think wb may be a good idea as this will happen again no doubt
That’s such a pity Grant, the finish was amazing apart from the paint reaction.
These things do happen, however after all the effort you went to, it’s demoralising to see this result😢.
If big g did a nosh channel we’d watch that aswell laaaaaaavly 🇬🇧👍
I find acid etch primer on previously painted items causes no end of issues. A wet on wet epoxy yields far better results.
Yep I’m definitely getting some on the van 👍👍
Thanks again Grant. You know My motto, I don't care how difficult the job is, AS LONG AS IT PAYS GOOD !!!
Sorry, I forgot to also say which a few people have eluded to, you need to etch but then put a wet on wet sealer/ primer coat on before topcoat, etch is not designed to be painted straight over, it will also flake off eventually and have poor durability.
It's the thinner in the direct gloss melting the previous paint, I go really light on the first few coats to seal it in, as you say it's had it. Unfortunately too wet, too soon.
Felt gutted for you Grant
as I know your a
perfectionist and luv
watching ur work. There's
always a bit of a risk when
correcting someone else's
work. Never mind mate,
you take care
Bloody nightmare Grant. Just what you don’t need. Like you say best action from here is full blast and powder coated.
Have a great weekend.
What a ballache, Had this happen to me loads when i was doing them, As you said It's the cheap crappy paint underneath coming through
Hi try a light dust coat of the black and dry for few minutes I find this is a good sealer and gives more grip can stop issues like this .. going in heavy straight on can be bit much if u don’t know wots underneath 👍
Fry up with chips
Sounds like a nice one
About the same kind of luck I have mate, thanks for the honest content as awlays.
Hi mate 😂 keeping it really, showing the ups and downs 👏, you might not remember but I did tell you it's not all roses, keep going, top man..
😂😂😂😂 I know I know
I wouldn't use direct gloss on wheels what been done before stick to waterbase paint seals it well used to use solvent base and get issues now and again I use waterbase all time now never get reactions
Hi Grant, gutted for you mate it's not good when it ends up where you can't charge the customer due to something that's not your fault but at least he understands that this can happen as some will get the right hump and demand that you sort it at the price agreed.
I recon these wheels had a DIY refurb using rattle cans (primer and colour) then maybe a 2k rattle can clear seeing as the thinners you used to clean them didn't take it off at the start, once you done all your prep work it must have broken through the clear then it's pickle city🤦♂🙄
Hope you are keeping well mate🙏👍
Makes me laugh when they are so critical of the paint on the wheel but fit the cheapest of tyres.
If it was the original paint it would have fryed up with the etch primer 1000% after looking over the primed section im gonna say its the 1k etch primer the 2k black has eaten n fryed barly any thinners in 2k gloss bet if it was scratched bk the original colour will be fine best to use water based on alloys grant and if not a good quality sealer to prevent this i feel for you brother but happens to the best of us n no disrespect grant but your way to skilled to be doing alloys mate just my two pence 👍👍
Did what you could grant but as always better to be honest and atleast you will hopefully help them to sort them out properly 👍
I had a similar problem when I was doing wheels, I did the same as you and took them to be blasted and powder coated and the same thing was happening, nothing would stick, it turned out that the customer worked at a chemical plant and was driving through puddles of chemicals which had contaminated the alloy
Recon there’s mega silicone on them wheels beforehand .
Seen it appen loads it’s a pitfa G man 👍
Hello mate, try sikkens (direct to metal) aerosol cans. Go out to your van now and throw that etch in the bin!😊
You got a link I’ll take a look
You should have used a wet on wet 2k primer over the etch
It definitely looks like paint reaction to previous, I've had this happen a few times but not on wheels.
Hi grant, great content as usual! How much base/clear do you use on 4 wheels?
Same thing happens when we put the stuff we spray with AC laquer too close to the infra red lamps in work
2k prime - seal it.
Hello matey. why don't you use your UVprimer couple light coats dusted on cure quickly then waterbase and clear. Thats what I would do as you probably remember 45yrs.good painter. Anyway i remember you saying once earlier on you don't do wheels 😂👍🇬🇧
I was on a van for years doing wheels.. its previous repairs where 1k clear has been used.. really annoying when you spend a good few hours labour for it all to go wrong in the final process.. lots of time wasted and carnt charge the customer.
Old paint story you can put salt on chips but not chips on salt, synthetic on cellulose but not cellulose on synthetic same applies here.
can you use BAR coat. i used to use it then painting steam engines cabs they was very difficult to paint.
You can but it never hardens so I wouldn’t on wheels, I think I’m going to use a wet on wet epoxy that shit seals everything and won’t get fry ups
Bar coat them to form a barrier then re do .
Can you use a isolator to stop the reaction.?
Grant theses wont black in the 1st place they were silver from brand new then done black not very good at that which is why there is silver coming through the black paint also if you look in side its imprinted what colour they are from factory i bet it says silver not black! This is also why they are fraying up as they were not done properly in the 1st place so thats why it gave you the problem 👍
Gutted for u grant 😮
Sehr gute Arbeit macht ihr Engländer ❤
Off to the sand blaster
Evening mate
Hello Grant, that was annoying,it looked fine in the video til they blistered on the wheel.nice looking car.
What's the craic with the back/inner dish of the wheel when doing the face like this? Just left with the overspray?....
Depends what the customers paying for
Kannst du mir bitte sagen wo ich infrarot Strahler kaufen kann. Danke
bloody oranges lol
Oops mate
Some jobs are being proper funkers
Thaks! And for bumpers or body to? Wthat guns plz! 😊
I have to many for body my favourite clear gun is Iwata ws400
2k primer, non etch would have sealed it.
Hi ,what guns you use, write please. Thx! Basecoat and clear coat?
For wheels Iwata lph 80 for base and for clear
could you not use a sealer first, or maybe flatten back the fur up and do a couple more dusty build up coats then final coat?, i dont know the answer but you have to make money ya cant work for nothing, anyway good luck
Waist of money do properly acid dip! real car enthusiasts wouldn't go near a van refurbishment.
Too much thinners in the paint , use none or very little, the thinners has bit into the old shit and lifted it
I only used a tiny splash but your right
Not criticising your work as I watched you do top quality work on panel repairs but the only way to go with alloy wheels is powder coating. Much more durable IMO. Only cost a bit more than respraying🤷♂️
I know this mate but there’s a market for it, and if it’s going to feed the family and the weather don’t dictate if I can work I’m going to do it 👍 no offence taken
I had powder coated wheels and it was a great at first but then the lacquer all cracked. I think the actual process is powdercoat to protect the alloy and then paint to finish. Keep up the great work Grant you'll perfect your methods.
Mobile paint expert with no idea why it’s all gone wrong , then starts blaming the other chaps who painted them , hilarious 😂. Then puts the wheels back on the car fucked up 😂
Can tell your new 🤣🤣🤣
