The problem isn't fare evasion, the problem is the people who fare evade.
The drop in revenue isn't because riders are refusing to pay, the drop in revenue is because paying riders want to avoid fare evaders.
The people who sleep, piss, crap, eat, spill, stink, intimidate, do drugs, and puke all over BART do not pay to get on. Get them out and paying rider will return.

ACTUALLY the drop in revenue is because of thenlockdowns and the covid policies. The entire bay is still recovering from this. Not just bart. It's less people out and about. Get your facts straight. Not that bart isn't safe. Also work from home people aren't going to the office as much in places like SF.
You make no sense. These gates will help to reduce fare evaders. And the majority of those are the ones causing the problems on the train too.
This is about adjusting the equation of problematic fare evaders to paying passengers. The less fare evaders, the more paying passengers. Of course policing will still be done, but avoiding paying fairs will be much more difficult. I'm sure they'll make adjustments as these new gates are deployed.

The three stations I visit most are SFO, Civic Center (well used to at least until I stopped going to SF), and Walnut Creek.
Never saw a fare evaders at SFO. Walnut Creek maybe once or twice. Civic Center it was 30% of total riders.
I did laugh at that. If they can wall off Oakland, that will solve 80% of the problem.

I can remember when bart first started operating back in the 70's. The old fare gates worked fine before crime was decrimmalized.
The weakness will be the handicap gate. They are wider and therefore you have more leverage when trying to force your way through them. Hopefully they are stronger than other similar type faregates i've seen in other cities and that won't be possible, but i'm not optimistic.
What they should deploy at those gates is face recognition technology so they can be fined. There is no right to privacy in a public space.
They've already installed a few of these elsewhere. They can still pretty easily be crawled under by most.
@@jKLa I feel like you have to be more desperate to crawl on the dirty floor of a train station that to jump over or push through. Maybe that’s just me, but I’d never crawl on the floor of a train station, definitely not to save a few bucks.

In Los Angeles the freeloaders just break open the Handicap gate, which then remains broken/open for weeks before Metro cares to fix it.

Extremely expensive to retrofit. BART could build another BART line for that money. The new lines or segments should be designed from the outset with platform doors, but the existing system can be upgraded when BART runs out of actually urgent matters to attend to.

Those gate look like the gates I see in Boston when I visit there. They are pretty good at stopping fare jumpers there. I think I've seen only one who managed to do it in Boston.

Yes! I grew up and my father lived in Newton, MA. I noticed a much better design. They had tried to protect someone who jumped in the gate.

Have BART been listening? We been asking to expand more restrooms for years. And full time cleaning person to make sure those restrooms are cleaned!!!!
They already have them for some stations. It was recently open past year

How about a double gate system with a sensor? If it tracks more than one person after the entry of the first gate. The 2nd wont open and alerts the kiosk or guard.

I've thought the same thing. Only problem is that should someone follow the first person in, they will be effectively trapped by whoever is behind them.
Given who these fare gates are trying to deter (the people committing crimes on BART, deterring peaceful riders), that seems like a scenario which could end *very* badly if an innocent bystander is cornered between them and impenetrable fare gates.
this was filmed a long time ago, the guy is riding an old train that has been completely taken out of service. odd that this clip was posted hours ago.
They still use legacy trains from time to time.
We have faregates like that on the TTC in Toronto, Canada, except they're much shorter than the ones in this video.

lol if Bart was actually listening to its riders, then they’d have 24/7 security all through out every station and throughout every train. They wouldn’t let people literally shoot up inside the bart train.
And how much do you think that would cost? Security doesn't work for free. How many stations are there? How many trains? And how many shifts for each? Want 24/7 securiry? Multiple those numbers by 3. How much would fares have to go up to cover those increased costs?
how about being back pre pandemic train schedules, Can't leave Hayward to go southbound before 5:34am prior there was a train a little after 5 am. This has created issues for my son and I, I don't have the option to drive due to medical conditions. Stuck paying more for lyft five days a week in a limited income because of this schedule change that has never been readjusted after society opened back up. Some people have worn schedules and school schedules that need that earlier train you removed.
What are you talking about? The most important thing for BART PD to do is cite old Asian women at Daly City for dropping off passengers in the red zone.
They did start having cops on trains last year, and then they doubled police patrols in the spring. I'd say that BART is actually improving safety at a pretty healthy clip. It's at least 100x better now than it was just six months ago and getting better.

How easy is it to push open the gates or allow someone to slip by behind someone?
Yeah, those are the two main scenarios I can imagine some to do... mainly to stand really close the the person in front paying and once the gate is open, just brush up that that person and force walk that person in front along with the bad guy.. I hope the door closes very quickly and the paying person should to walk fast thru so the door can close fast behind them.

While BART is installing the new fare gates they could employ some big security guards at the other stations to stop the fare evaders. Even if BART prosecuted no-one being stopped & removed from the station would deter 90% of the offenders.
I got on BART a couple weeks ago, there were two BART police officers questioning some skinny Asian guy outside the gates, didn't look like anything bad honestly, right in front of me dude jumps the gates and by "jump" he lifted his leg to get over it, another woman did the double arm vault over it, and then they sprinted down the stairs quickly to get on a train so they couldn't be caught? Nah they calmly strolled to the escalator and just rode it all the way to the bottom, next train wasn't for a good 7 minutes. Did a station agent alert anyone? Did one of those BART cops break off and stop them? Nah, and that's the problem.
Its much more efficient to just build better gates. Having guards isnt going to guarantee catching people.

i have seen people fare evade BART by going around the faregates ad over the railing. These new gates are a step in the right direction but won't stop everyone.

Ok this new type of gate is way better than the flimsy plastic swinging gates on trial for priority gates. At least they close quicker than the old ones so piggybacking is harder.
Edit: Now just make the bottom of the gate a bit lower so it's impossible to crawl through.

A person who fare evades is an unidentified person on premises who can commit other crimes. Until the new gates go up, a person with truncheon should be present to 'motivate' paying or a busted knee cap. In China, face recognition cameras are everywhere to identify repeat offenders and automatically notify law enforcement where these people are and where they are going. It is only a matter of time before we see this in North America.
not paying your fare is against regulation not against the law. its like a parking ticket. thats why u can just not talk to fare inspectors and run away.
The new fare gates are taller than New York City subway stations like Atlantic Avenue Barclay's Center.
This is a good first step. They should follow-up wirh face recognition technology to catch evaders. There is no right to privacy in a public space so it is legal.

West Oakland has always been a station I've never to get off at. Looks like a fare gate from back East.
Why bother. Raise minimum wage statewide. Than set up a general tax to pay for BART. Won't have to charge anyone and won't have to worry about jumpers. It is public transportation isn't it? Add more tax for buses and taxis, could be free as well.

We have turnstiles which are also a bad option to fare payment as they are also very easy to fare evade.
But we are getting new gates and platform screen doors in 2024. A prototype of one of our new gates are now showcased in one of our stations.

BART is so overpriced I avoid paying for it as much as possible because I think public transportation should be free and especially when theres people smoking drugs on the trains and i've never seen anyone get a ticket or kicked off for that I know it happens but what is the purpose of all the cameras if they don't help prevent public drug use theft , violence , anything can happen on the Bart and you pay for these poor services as they capitalize on your need for transportation. How can I work of I can't afford to travel? What if I have an emergency and can't pay for a ticket
This is an endless money pit. That money could be spent to improve service. Look at New York City, they spent countless dollars trying to combat fare evasion, yet their services are still terrible. Redundant routings, poor connections, and signalling from the 1940s. Provide a great service and the riders will come (and pay). Try to fight fare evasion when the service is poor and you will be stuck with trying to keep out non-paying riders.
It's clear that you can't jump these gates. I suppose you can crawl underneath, but most black women will be too overweight to do that. Overall, I think this is decent solution to fare evading.
