- Despite police bracing for violence, with more than 100 protests anticipated, these fears proved unfounded. Instead, thousands of anti-racism demonstrators turned out peacefully.
The fatal stabbing of three girls in Southport has sparked the worst unrest in a decade. Almost immediately after the attack, social media posts falsely speculated that the suspect was a Muslim asylum seeker.
This misinformation fuelled the violence, driven by anti-immigration and islamophobic sentiment and the far-right. Police and politicians have cautiously welcomed the calmer scenes last night.
However, preparations remain in place for more potential disorder this weekend.

I was living in London in an area where there was a lot of integration and 2nd/3d/4th generation and didn't think it of it being any other way. As I started to visit them for our kids with the same disability to network I started to see the picture and it was an eye opener. It was good because despite me thinking them wrong I could see that they were normal working class folk with good hearts and not stupid or small minded so it cleared up that contradiction.
