Thank you so very much for such clear and concise instructions. This knob fell off 3 months ago, and the mechanic mis-informed me & told me the WHOLE shift gear had to be replaced. I paid $143! When it fell off this week, 12/8/19, I researched the situation & saw your video. Purchased the knob from Amazon for $8.99 & was able to replace it w/the good Lord's help by myself. I'm a disabled senior. Yes, I went to the dag nab shop & discussed the situation at length (40 mins) until they agreed to credit me.
I want to thank you so much for posting this video! We bought my son a 2005 Accord and the button broke the next day. The part cost $24 with next day shipping and we did it in 10 minutes and it went exactly as you showed on the video. Take care and, again, thank you very much!!!
I did it, took me less that 30 mins.. had to get help to twist handle, to weak. But it's now fixed. Whoohoo. And I am 65, disabled and on Chemo. Just save me $200.00 thank you so much.
well all looks the same for my 2017 and that I thank you for being SLOW, and CLEAR on how you did yours. great job. If you lose the spring, just grab a pens spring Lol
Thanks for this video. Just replaced mine a couple of days ago. Your video gave me everything I needed to get the job done. Very easy repair. Thanks for posting this!
I did it, all by myself!! Thank you soo much! Hardest part for me was separating the nob, that took me a while praying i wouldnt break it, while lifting the notches to release it. The rest was easy. Love this video soo much. Thanks again!
Thank you very much, my knob broke at my home parking lot and I couldn’t back out my car. I watched your video and went to auto zone, I purchased the part and installed it with the help of your video. You saved me a headache and of-course some money as well, Thank you
Thank you so much! I had no idea that this knob could break and when it did I was shocked to find out that it’s a common issue. Your instructions were easy to follow and a life saver since this my only vehicle. 👏👏👏
My brother in law gave my son his old 2004 Honda Accord, the Lish button was missing, he was going to get it fixed , a mechanic told him $300 parts & labor. Mechanic didn’t come thru! He showed us how to operate without button, since it was a FREE car e we could get push button fixed ourselves! I ordered this part for $5.18 on Amazon. Watched this video & fixed it myself in like 10 mins, taking it off the car, pulling it apart, shaking for any broken pieces, inserting the spring & knob, & placing back on the car! Thanks Much!
Best video on doing this! Thanks for mentioning the tabs, saved me from having to purchase another part. I bought the OEM Honda one that DID NOT come with a spring, fortunately we found the old one.
Thank you for posting this! It saved me from having to tow my car (since it was stuck in park) and having to pay the dealership lots of money for something that took me 10 minutes to do myself.
Thank you very much! I used this video to do exactly this! My first time ever doing anything on my car myself hah After seeing your video I got me a set of simple pry tools as well, couldn't have done it without it. Thank you!
This was by far one of the best videos on this. After watching several other ones, I found this one and the instructions were clear and I was able to replace it in three minutes by myself. Thanks!!!
You are awesome! Thank you so much. I did this 5 years ago when my button disintegrated right in front of me LOL! And again 2 days ago. I'm blessed to have found your video this time around.
Laura V the same thing JUST happened to me ten mins ago when I was in a cvs parking lot. Luckily it was by my parents house so I called my dad in a panic to help me get backed out while my car was in neutral and park it at their house. Good to know I’m not the only person who’s shifter knob literally disintegrated lol it just popped out when I was backing out of the parking spot and shattered everywhere! I instantly went into panic mode lol.
Amazing. Thank you. Mine just shot out at me while in the middle of parallel parking--talk about awkward in NYC!!!! The first time it broke it was superficial enough that I just superglued it back together, but this time is where the spring sits, so that's a no-go for superglue. This will make things so much better.
thank you. you saved me from stressful night. fantastic step by step description. helped me fix my gear shift in less than 5 minutes after I purchased the part
Thank you - HUGE help! Bought the piece for about $15.00. My mechanic would have doubled the price for the part and charged a half hour labor ($55.00).
Thank you this helped a lot!!! When it happened I was like NOOOOOO, what am i gonna do. Thankfully for RUclips. This video was more helpful then another and I used the link below to order the part. Appreciate you doing this video as you saved me a lot of money going to a mechanic! Thanks again!!!
lorenz m sadly it's been a year and I don't remember. I just bought the piece I needed and followed what the video said. You can always take this to auto store and show them and they should be able to tell you or ask somebody else here who posted a comment. Good luck.
Hi! I was successfully able to fix it thanks to you! Amazing video , simple and very easy to do and follow along. My only question is that mine didn’t have The white piece on the shift lever to begin with. I was able to put it together without it. Will this cause and issue or risk? Should I buy one?
Thank you so much! This was really helpful. The only thing I wanted to add is that you really need to look for broken pieces of the old knob. The one I was replacing had multiple little pieces that had gotten stuck in the handle that I had to fish out before everything worked as it should. Also important to point out that the metal piece sticking out of the shifter rod needs to have the top point to the right before installing the handle again. If not, you can have issues with the car properly shifting into Park and not being able to remove your key! Thanks again for great info!
got it done in 10 minutes or so with your help. I was scared I'd break some plastic part, but luckily none broke. It was hard to tell if the handle comes apart fully after you separate one clip, basically will the 2nd one come apart or will you break it if you don't put screwdriver under it too? but I got it done, used a couple of toothpicks to clean out quite a few broken pieces. Mine was gunked up pretty good with lithium crease from 2004. I rubbed some more grease around in it. Hope to get another 16+ years out of my $5 replacement button.
great job on this demo. The other video's I saw gave very poor suggestions to remove the side cover endangering the clips. You clearly highlighted and explained where to pry the clips to safely remove.
Thanks! My button popped out tonight and I had no idea what happened. It looks just as mangled in the back as your client's button. I was worried I'd have to replace the whole shifter handle. This looks easy!
@@Mimi8402 Hi there, I was! If you check out the video's description, he included part numbers and links to buy them. Like the guy mentioned in the video, you only need the button (unless you break something while taking apart), which is pretty cheap. The video was really easy for me to follow, and after a few minutes I had the new button in. It's probably obvious, but step one is to pull the parking brake, so the car doesn't roll while in drive (to get at the screws). I've sold the car since my comment 3 years ago, but I didn't have any problems with the new button for the time I had the car. Good luck!
@@Ck87JF thank you! I ordered the part and I’m gonna give it a try. I hate dealing with car stuff but this seems simple enough. No need to get it towed to the shop and all that headache.
@@Mimi8402 you're welcome! This was one of the easiest fixes I did for my Accord. If you need to move the car before the part gets in, you may be able to push the button into the hole to shift out of Park. There's also a small rectangular cover above and to the left of the "P" on the list of gears. If you pry the cover off and stick a screwdriver down in the hole, you can shift it out of Park that way too (sort of an emergency option for when the button doesn't work or the car battery is dead).
The silver part came off of mine a long time ago. Looks like the previous over tried gluing it back on. I've been pressing the inside with my thumb, bit after a few years the guts crumbled. Hope I can do this myself.
Great video, thanks! FYI...I bought a shift button and spring from my local dealership today (8-17-17) and it cost me $22.85 with tax. Also, that side piece that snaps out to remove the shift button is $40! So don't break it!
I replaced the button after mine broke on my '04 Accord. I have 2 things wrong. The notch inside the handle broke off where the spring goes, but that doesn't matter that much I don't think. I can still press and depress the button. The thing that's bothering me is when I put it all back together the metal plunger/button that releases it turned and I had to take it off again to line it up again! How do I keep it from turning like that? Maybe glue the plastic piece in place so it's always lined up, Idk. If it's not lined up correctly it won't work.
Please make note: when removing this part you cause the ignition release to not recognize that the car is in park and it won't release the key in ignition for removal. Some say wiggle gear shift. Didn't work for me. Will take apart again and see if it is in sync. Just a warning.
I have a 2005 Honda Accord this happened to as well. Will you give me the part names and number so that I may order them and try this repair myself.? Thank you.
After I put the button in and placed the Basel on the button does not depress nor does the shifter shift. Glued my old one together, will see if it works tomorrow.
Hi thank you mine always wobbled so finally one day I was driving and I just pulled up on it and everything just came off of it it was just a metal stick. So I bought at the auto store one of those eight ball ones but every time I put the screws in and tightened it it would not let me put it in park or out of park, if I had those two little tiny screws tightened all the way, but now I know why
was looking for this video. i was trying to replace my shifter ligh bulb in 2004. could not get the bubl socket back into shifter because the wire is too short with the parts together. i even tried removing the shifter handle like you did, but when i reinstalled everything, when i screwed handle back on, i could not get key out of ignition? Now i see that that metal rod has holes that have to be towards driver side! didn't notice when took off. i am going to try that so i can secure my handle. i am driving it without screws because then the key will come out. thanks.
great video. Question. After I insert the spring correctly and place the button in correctly the spring will not force the button towards me and just gets stuck when pressed in. I tried using to lubricant to free the button a little but no luck...any suggestions?
