I just got the chrome piece and the spring. That plastic bracket was $40 so I took the chance without it and worked perfectly. Cost for repair was $22. Thank you so much. It was easy thanks to your video.
I've never attempted to fix anything having to do with my car in my entire life. This video gave me the confidence and information to be able to do this on my own. I spent under $10, and fixed the knob!
Cassandra Revels I purchased the gear shift button off amazon, & the lithium lubricant stuff from my local Auto Zone. I didn’t need to purchase any of the other items he used in the video.
I'm with you ladies and will be fixing mine tomorrow. Honda Dealership wanted $100+ to fix my gear shift. So then I saw this video(thought this guy explains it all) and just wanted to pay for the parts. They still attempted to rob me and wanted $85 ($45 just for the cover, $22 for the knob,etc.). I fixed them and got the entire package off Amazon for $39 and these are OEM parts! I will post how it turns out. I'm a little anxious. :)
I know this video is 5 years old but it came in handy last night when my gear shift decided to break so I will be replacing it today thanks to this video
bought the repair kit for under $18, watched this video step by step and fixed it myself, took about 15 minutes to do. I was determined not to pay a shop for this, where I live it would have been at least $150. Thanks for this video.
Thank you so much for a very detailed and clear demonstration on how to fix the shift knob. I had it break apart when I was visiting my son. You helped us get back on the road quickly at a very affordable price!
My friend, your video, especially the angles and lighting you used , finally enabled me to see where I was going wrong. Thank you so much for your illuminating how-to.
Thank you so much! With all the stress of Covid-19 I was horrified when i got in my car yesterday and saw the gearshift button lying on the floor, along with some little black plastic bits. I called my mechanic; he said they could get the part and it would be $200 to fix it. That seemed like a lot, but even more important to me was that I wanted to avoid having others in my car right now. I found your video, was able to buy the part today from the dealer, and carefully followed your instructions. It seems to be working fine. This 63 year old female is certainly grateful to you for that excellent video!
So thankful for RUclips & guys like you 🙏🏼 my 2004 accord cosmetically is not in the best shape (faded/peeled paint, headliner fell so it’s up with spray adhesive just to name a few.. & now my shift knob broke again after supergluing it a few months prior).. what I love about old cars is the easy & cheap fixes. My car may be a “hoop d” but hey, it beats having a car note, high insurance & having to go to a dealership for the smallest of fixes 😂🤷♂️
Hey, I JUST made this repair today to a 2005 Honda Accord LX, and this video was a true life-saver. Perfectly done. AND, I'm glad I watched this all the way through before attempting the repair, so I had all my new parts in order -- particularly, the plastic cover, which broke in *exactly* the same fashion as yours did in this video. Anyway, man, THANKS MUCH! I shudder to think how much the dealer would have charged for this same repair. Probably in the neighborhood of $200, and I'm not even joking!
The best video I found on fixing this issue. Great camera work. Enough detail to successfully fix the gear shift knob. Including the Honda part numbers was a plus.
Great video 👍 you brought me peace of mind and saved me $$$ I had bought a replacement on Amazon but I was having issues where I could not remove the key from the ignition so I kept removing the screws in order to press the shifter then I was able to remove the key I was pulling my hair and was ready to purchase another shifter until I came across your video and noticed the white plastic piece thankfully I did not trashed the old shifter where inside was the white plastic😅 once I placed it as shown on your video shifter was working as it should without any issues. That small white plastic was the difference.Thank you again for the time and effort you've given, much appreciated.
Need to add that I am a 65 Chemo patient, with Chemo I was worried about someone in my car, since I am I'm immunity compromised. This Covid-19 could kill me. This have been a great help. Thank you again. Now to figure out where to get the parts.
Mine is an 05 and it just broke. Great video. My favorite part was about the coffee lol. Thats how I was this morning. I had to have my coffee before I began repairing my car. Lol Thanks a lot bro!!
Thank you so much for this great video. I bought the genuine Honda part from Amazon for $18 and I replaced this in about 5 minutes while watching this video. THank you so much.
Hey "Big Dog." Thanks a million. I was going to order the plastic replacement for $25 and 3 days to wait for it. I'd rather pay Honda prices and get this repaired TOMORROW!!! You da MANN, Dawg!!
Thank you!! I was in a mall and I could only get shift to go to N or D AND I couldn’t get my key out!! Drove home carefully, found your video!! Wow!! Great and to the point!! (No annoying music either!!) Got my key out!! Got it apart. Totally shattered!! I copied the part numbers easily. The tip on how I could drive it if I needed to by depressing the lever took all my worry away!! Thank you!!!
My Honda's shifter button disentigrated. Your video gave me the information i needed to do the repair myself. This ild grandma is not too old to learn new things to save money!
Actually... two thumbs up! WAY UP!!! You make that look soooo easy. Today I jumped in my '04 Accord & guess what? You guessed it! I thought I had an emergency... until I realized I could use a thumb inside to actuate it & get to work. Oh, and BTW... THANK YOU for sharing the Honda part #'s. Great video. Subscribed!
Without your extremely helpful video, this woman would have had to pay a whole lot more to have this fixed. Plus, I did it myself! Yay! Next up: Cabin air filter. I have your video queued up. Thank you so much!
Awesome video. I just had my shift know break into pieces. Left my car in drive only. I have been so stressed on how to fix it and how much Honda would charge me. Now I have hope to fix it myself, or at least drive it in an emergency. Thank you so much, your video has help me alot.
Thank you SO MUCH for this very clear detailed video and links to the parts! It made it so easy to order them and do the whole job myself! I am so grateful, this saved me so much money.
Just ordered the parts through your links, thanks so much for making this video! My 2005 Accord just disintegrated its shifter button ~ 154k miles. My radio kinda sputtered out in the past year as well. I’ll have to replace that down the road too.
This video was SOOOOO helpful!! My knob shattered, as you said in your video, and nobody had the part & I didn't want to wait to have another part shipped. I took off the knob as you describe here and I was able to get an aftermarket handle that I was able to anchor on with alan head screws & it works like a charm.
Great job! My wife's car had this issue. Everything happened just as you said. Easy fix. Bought the parts at the stealership. $53 Ouch. Could have found them on line cheaper. The parts counter guy tried to talk us out of the side handle piece. I said well.... the one in the video broke at the top so just in case I want it. Guess what... The piece broke too. Mine wasn't a clean break though. the inner plastic part shattered into a bunch of pieces inside the handle but I was able to dump them all out with no problem. Thanks for the great vid. Saved me a lot of $$$ not having the stealership do it!! Just glad I was smart enough to look for a video first. :)
It worked! But when I first assembled the shifter with the NEW spring, somehow the spring bent as I tested the button. I put it all together, but then it took two hands for me to push the button in and shift. I took it all apart again and put the OLD spring back in. (It could have been one of the "50 pieces" of broken plastic in the shifter that caused the spring to deform because when I took it off to re-do it, a little black piece fell out.) Btw, the side trim didn't break when I took the shifter apart, either time! I guess I'll try to return the side piece to the vendor.
Hi, much thanks for your detailed tutorial. Even though I am not about to replace the knob, I would like to replace the whole lever handle. Thanks again.
Excellent video!! Unfortunately, I did not come across your video until after I made the repair on my brother’s 2004 Honda Accord. As a result, I was unable to snap the cover back on no matter how hard I tried. After the bits were removed, another issue emerged: I could not shift into Park or First gear (all other gears were ok). ?????? Somehow the new spring got bent so I reused the original and all was well. I did purchase the pushbutton and new spring from NAPA for about $11 (I received a small discount for being an AAA member). I could have purchased a new cover for a few dollars more, but decided to use the original cover. As illustrated in your video (@ 5:00) one “tab” on the inside of the cover piece was slightly broken, but the cover did snap securely into place. None of the parts I purchased were OEM so expect to pay more for original parts. Much thanks again for the excellent vid.
A+ video but be careful with the metal bit on the stick that tends to fall off under your seat when you first remove the handle. It happened to me and that thing kept sliding off my fingers until it loged itself under the seat carpet by the floor A/C duct ! For a few secs I thought i would have to remove the seat to get to it and was swearing but i could get it from the back seats. Also don't skip on the Lithium grease this switch design is crude and needs it and it only cost $4 more. I also had one tab broken when i disassembled the handle, you don't have to replace it as long as one tab is good. The tab design is so thin that i suspect it breaks every time you disassemble it and i was extra careful using plastic prying tools. Got the job done and thanks for a great video !
Great video. I bought the full enchilada, all 3 parts just to be safe. Unfortunately I didn’t do a thorough job cleaning out the remnants of the cracked silver button, so I had to disassemble it again after the push button wasn’t working smoothly. Broke the new end piece clip in the process. 💩 I could have gotten away with buying just the button, but if you do buy all the parts, MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN ALL OF THE OLD BUTTON OUT.
2021 and my accord broke like this, the engine only has 70,000 miles on it, its a 2004 model. looks like honda has sold over 10,000 of these gear shifter knobs on ebay . must be a very common problem. thank you for the tutorial video, much appreciated.

Thanks for the links I feel a little better now. I can still change gears but I will be happier when it's done. #msfixitintraining.
Thank you so much I did not know what to do didn’t want to pay a tow watched your video did it myself it costed me 20 bucks you are the bomb good karma your way from a single mom!
Good video but one small correction. The shifter handle was changed for the 2007 model. The button is no longer on the left side but was moved to the front of the handle and was lifted with the fingers and not the thumb. This design was used in the next generation Accord, gen 8, and probably was in response to the problems with the earlier design. Part of Honda's continuing improvement during a model run.
Yes, the knob was moved to the front for 2006-2007 models (and 8th generation models). Similar procedure to remove shift knob but I do not believe all repair parts are available separately (have to buy knob assembly to get all parts). Thanks for the input.
Can You do a video on all the little things that break on this car? I’d like to be aware of dangerous stuff that I can maybe replace ahead of time. I was lucky when the hood struts failed. I just went to the trunk to get washer fluid when the hood fell!! Sometimes on amazon it says “people also bought…” and one of those was the hood struts. I can’t find anywhere all these parts are listed, gear button, struts, gas tank open cable Etc.. thanks!!
Big Dog50001 Automotive : I used white Lithium Grease between during assembly , its very hard to press the knob during cold weather. Did I put too much grease ? Whats the alternative
Nice video brother, just replaced mine however I can't make it go to park it feels like something solid is making it not shift to park, Any clue what it might be?

Yes, the knob was moved to the front for 2006-2007 models (and 8th generation models). Similar procedure to remove shift knob but I do not believe all repair parts are available separately (have to buy knob assembly to get all parts). Thanks for the input.
Replaced the button on my ‘03 the other week. Turns out the black piece clip was broken. Need to order that piece now.
Thanks for the input!
I appreciate the lesson it really helped me thanks👍
Hi thank you. I was told that the button replacement was going to cost 500.00.

Great video. Can those knobs work on a right hand drive gear shift?
Great Video Sir !
I can’t find anywhere all these parts are listed, gear button, struts, gas tank open cable Etc.. thanks!!
Thank you this helped me so much

Big Dog50001 Automotive : I used white Lithium Grease between during assembly , its very hard to press the knob during cold weather. Did I put too much grease ? Whats the alternative
I need the little white and silver piece you had in the shifter before you put the knob back down. Do you know the part number for it?
Wow. Thanks for this. Easy enough a girl can do it, think.
👍
Nice video brother, just replaced mine however I can't make it go to park it feels like something solid is making it not shift to park, Any clue what it might be?
Great tips! Thank you
