    Thank you so much Fred. I am doing my logging analysis course and I understood that how to read the R0 and Rt from the track after your explain. It is very formative and priceless. Thank you and appreciate it.

    I Found the Basic Evaluation of South Louisiana well log presentation to be very helpful. Fred Thurber has demonstrated great mastery of the subject and presented the interpretation in a professional manner. There are a lot of things i did not get from class that after listening to the video they became very clear. I wish Fred will continue to post more videos of log interpretation as well as those from other disciplines in Petroleum Engineering.
    Thanks once more Mr. Fred Thurber.

    Interval transit time (or delta-t) is high in shale. It's the inverse of velocity. True, shales don't have much porosity, but the clay minerals that comprise them are very slow minerals (meaning, they have a high delta-t). Therefore, when delta-t is used to compute porosity in shales, it will overestimate the true porosity. Same is true in shaley rocks.

      so what do I use for computing porosity in shales that is reliable??

    Great Vid but never use the SP log as your shale volume indicator (lithology) unless you are 100% sure that you do not have HC in your formation. HC damps the SP curve . And also the best matrix travel times for matrix are from your petrophyscist's core plugs tests.

    Great video! I was taught the best method to determine porosity is to read half way between the density porosity and neutron porosity curves. Interestingly, you will see that method yields ~26% porosity for the target zone, which is what he calculated with the transit times (showing that both methods work well).

    • @eslam_edrees
      @eslam_edrees 2 года назад

      Can you Tel my how did you that!!!

    • @gruud6700
      @gruud6700 2 года назад

      @@eslam_edrees Reading the values at 10260 feet depth in the liquid zone, the neutron and density curves overlap around 26% porosity (therefore, their halfway point is 26%). You get a similar answer in the gas cap at 10250 feet where the neutron reads at 38%, and the density reads 15%, so the halfway point is 26.5%. However, for neutron-density porosity calculations in the gas cap, you should use following formula for more accurate porosity:
      square root of (((density porosity squared) + (neutron porosity squared))/2)
      or in other words,
      φformation = ((φDensity^2 + φNeutron^2)/2 )^0.5.
      Plugging in the porosity values from 10250 feet, I calculate 28.9% porosity.

    teacher if for the zone 1 water saturation is 10% so why we cant produce oil because its less then the 39% of water saturation. because the density of the first zone is occupied by hydrocarbons and the pressure of the zone 1 hydrocarbons does not gain water saturation of the zone 2 i mean the the down side of the reserviour so the zone 1 will push up by itself because of its pressure. hopefully you will answer of my question Thanks

    thank you so much for this video,, I have one question,, How can we determine the Zone of interest? I am still confusing because if we choose base on the top and the bottom of Sandstone, we also have another sandstone below our current zone of interest?? thank you in advance for your explanation,,

    • @mirandabrooks8043
      @mirandabrooks8043 6 лет назад

      the zone of interest has higher resistivity. Therefore it most likely is hydrocarbons. I am sure in the nature of time he abbreviated some of the lesson

  • @CHASSEP1
    @CHASSEP1 11 лет назад +2

    Hello, it is a mistake, because interval transit time is not high in shale. When interval transit time increase, porosity increase therefore we know that we are in sandstone zone.
    thanks

    • @gruud6700
      @gruud6700 6 лет назад +1

      Shale has very high porosity (but very low permeability, of course), therefore interval transit time should increase.

    can you please explain why you considered Sw=(Ro/Rw)^1/2 ? my understanding Archie equitation is phiSw=(Ro/Rt)^1l2

    • @JimmyTheGreek2000
      @JimmyTheGreek2000 6 лет назад

      Actually Sw=Sqrt of Ro/Rt or Sw=sqrtFxRw/Rt
      Therefore, we can re-write the equation as: Sw=(Ro/Rw)^1/2
      Sqrt= the square root
      F=Ro/Rw or F=a/phi^m (m is the cementation exponent which is = 2; However, m can range from 1.8 to 2.2)

      It's difficult to determine lithology with GR only . You got high GR in shale generally but its possible to get high GR with argillsious limestone and coal
