it really is funny how different music was then. theres nothing about these songs that fits the "popular music format" thats been around since the late 40's.
RedYellow Blue It seems like they were just kinda trying to find a sound/melody for their poems and lyrics. But you’re right there was no formula back then. Every song had it’s own sound.
So do I, I feel so connected with it. Meanwhile here at my 23 years of age, wishing I was born back then. No one has morals nowadays, all the youngsters will become “woke” and I have no clue how worse the future will look like. Truely wish there was a way to go back in time and experience it all.
Just listened to 1900-1909. It seems that the during this decade the songs have become more emotional! What would make sence in a wartime and the years leading up to the great depression! still my favourite time, wish I could Time travel :-) Thanks Nathaniel for sharing!
I hate being this guy, but if I understood you right, what war? The Spanish-American War ended in 1898 and WWI didn't start until 1914 (1917 for us). This was peacetime. And the Depression started in 1929... That would be like comparing 1970 or 1965 to 1990...
I imagine it was just the effect of WW1. In England and around Europe it resulted in huge patriotism but it was also emotional as families saw their sons sent to war and often died. With conscription this happened on a large scale. The battles saw deaths unparalleled in history. There was the Russian Civil War I guess but that was less of a big deal.
omg thank you so much for this upload!!! Ever since I first saw the movie "Contact" in that opening scene where they have all the radio waves of the songs that were played throughout the decades, I have been searching for the very last, very faint song you hear at the end before it gets all quiet. It's #15, Dark Town Strutters' Ball. You have helped me find the song I've been looking for for over ten years. I'm a history geek and my favorite era is around that time that song came out. Much appreciated. Thanks again!
Shame on the 9 people who disliked this. I have no idea why someone would dislike a video with old music except maybe for the fact that it doesn't have any videos in it which I understand can be boring for some but keep in mind they didn't have much live performances during that time since video was still rather new.
Thank you :), I am glad you liked the selection. I do agree with you that Livery Stable Blues should have been in the video, because it is the first jazz song after all! I also hope that people will learn about the music of yesteryear, because not enough people realize the importance and greatness of the music of the past.
@@robertmasina4610 well yes and no, there where portable radios but they werent really used becaused they were really expensive. Soldiers on the frontlines definitly dont use radios but old record players
Wireless communication during World War I was limited to coded signal. Broadcast audio, although demonstrated by Reginald Fessenden in 1906, did not begin until the 1920s. Army (and navy) camps did have phonographs (cylinders) and gramophones (disks), but in the trenches, soldiers were more concerned with diarrhea, flu, and being told to “go over the top” into enemy fire.
The 1910s are far better. They’re much more melodic, and both the singers and background musicians were far more talented, having no need for auto tune. Musicians today have no talent. It’s a shame, really.
1910s is better because the musicians created music with there own sweat and blood and there music actually told a story while the music now is just noise and the musicians now have ghost writers and all
This was when electricity was being put into houses, phones, the wireless radio was now really taking off with music and the war, i think we can let slide the quality, pretty sure this is pre-records as well.
Interesting time in music. Some of these songs still followed the format from the turn of the century while others seem to be pointing towards the music of the 20's and 30's. My parents were both born during this decade and my mom's parents would have been middle aged. Also, my mom's paternal grandmother would have been in her 80's (yes, we are an old family).
I had no idea "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" went back that far. I remember a lot of people of my grandparents' WWII generation singing it, but I guess it was popular with their parents' generation as well.
These artists are alive and well in the speakers of whatever device you are using. The reason it is eerie is because you are prone to the supernatural.
Thanks for this.. doing my family history wondering what people born 1890s might have listened to.. so glad to find something.. is so differnt they seemed to sing about anything... only song I knew before I watched this was by the light of the silvery moon :)
wow this music is a century old now! this raise two big questions: 1.what will music be like in another 100 years? 2.if we could time travel and show them 2010s music what would they think? I remember hearing a lot of these songs in old cartoons, music boxes,heard/sung in modern/modernish movies,TV shows, kids shows, sung by cartoon characters, etc so im guessing a lot of these are real classics....i doubt a song thats out now will be still relevant 100 years from now... also lol about the song about hating mornings.....even 100 years ago people hated getting up early!! and then even 50 to 100 years before that time so many people probably wanted to chuck a rock at their rooster!
It is amazing to me that being born in 1958 I am familiar with so many of these songs, and never heard them on the radio ...maybe in movies....also Irish songs ...must be the minority of the time were the Irish .
Derek Slonaker You are quite welcome. The music of this era that can be lost very easily. It was a pioneer era in many ways. I appreciate a young person as yourself taking interest. I'm guessing you like history as much as music. Thanks again.
Well done, Nathaniel. These really are the best of the best (in my opinion for what it's worth). Different genre but you might like some of the Skillet Lickers stuff.
Hello, My name is Cairri. I was born in 1912 and I have travelled to 2016 from 1922 as a ten year old. These are my all time favourite songs. Liked to let you know!

This is a great selection of songs some of which i've also heard in Boardwalk Empire. Would love to have heard Livery stable blues or stay down here where you belong tho. Guess there's only room for so many tho. Great selection of music from an era that most are ignorant of. Hopefully many will discover it through vids like this and shows like BE:)

Hi, Nathaniel! I *LOVE* the old songs from the Twenties you have, here! They're the ones popular around the time my dear old mom taught me & that we sang together for many years! There's one thing I would like to bring to your attention, though: The artist who sang Swanee (Song #5) was Al *JOLSON*, not Al Johnson. Hope you might appreciate this well-meant correction. Thanks, again, for all the beautiful old songs! :0)
Amazing that quite a few of these are fairly famous songs today. I doubt that ANY song from the 2010s will be remembered in 100 years .... not just because of the poor quality of songs but also due to lack of lasting media.
What accent is that from with the rolling tongues? Anyone know? Is that from a specific place or was that a local accent back then? I have an authentic 130 year old phonograph that I bought with hundreds of old playing disc's from the late 1800,s to about the early 40,s and many have that rolling tongues accent particularly the older ones around 1910 and older and always wondered about what that accent is.
Good work, Nat, but londonderry is older the 1900 and there is also a "versed" chopin... I suggest also the italian "ciribiribin" a world succes... o sole mio is dated 1898.
All these songs can be used or played anywhere without violations.. because all copyrights last 100 years. But uhh.. ya I guess that doesn’t really help.
It's like sayin' ''Red Dead Redemption anyone?)))))))))))'' Why would a game that is in the same decade than a game without those songs brought me here?

Especially "you've got to get up"
nice!
Woah my great grandma used to sing it too. My grandma sings it now and I had no idea it was from a song!

You are spot on with the songs, my Dad, born in 1930 now age 87 sings these songs in the aged care centre every day. Thankyou.
Can't be doing with this pop music, I listened to underground shit back then.
So many wonderful memories attached to those pieces.
How old are you
Thank you for sharing. Love John McCormack's voice, as well as the many others.
I kinda like how the "r" was pronounced back then, it sounds a lot like the Spanish "r".
+Otto Mendoza yes, elocution was common in singing back then.
Irish singers were popular then.
Thanks for sharing this Gold!! God bless you, first time I heard these songs!! Mesmerized :)
The Sound of World War 1. Just imagine some sad soldiers waiting in their trenches and listening to that!

My kids think I'm nuts because I LOVE listening to this kind of music!
+Lisa Doesburg Time may change their tastes inm usic as well. :)
I think my Dad is nuts too because he loves this music as well lol. But that's ok, it is interesting to hear how music sounded back then.
I remember this, I was 14 years old in 1914
They really roll their r's this decade haha! This is a great video thank you
THANKS ALOT FOR PUTTING ALL THESE LISTS TOGETHER
