The 1940s style is the stereotypical uyghur clothing in china. It is seen very often in dance performances on tv to represent our people to distinguish from other ethnic groups.

their clothes were so beautiful and unique until the 1950's then little by little they integrated with the rest of the world. I have ambiguous feelings... for one side it's nice to see the world homogenized, but at the other side it's like the country lost its true identity...

Niall Ferguson explains some of the reasons why certain style of clothing began to dominate, and its due to mass production. Before we needed tailors to individually adjust your clothes, but someone figured out we only needed a few clothes sizes, the small, medium, large, extra large etc we are used to now. It became therefore easier to mass produced because we only needed to produce a few sizes.
Since it was the industrialised West which first discovered this and mass produced it, this reason helped their clothing style to become dominant. Another reason was they were already the world powers so people were tempted to copy their style.
If traditional clothing could be mass produced, maybe they would come back into fashion in a small capacity. For example in Norway, women wear beautiful traditional clothing on their national day.

Colorful traditional clothes were very expensive and unaffordable. My uyghur grandparents were from the lower class and they only wore plain colors. They only had one of two of those good quality traditional garments that they treasured very much.

I feel sometimes similar. Used to every regions or even villages had their traditional dresses in the whole World. At first it disappeared from Europe (Idk USA even had traditional dresses except the native), then it slowly disappears from everywhere

Uyghurs people were from Qocho Kingdom ( Buddhist ) in Mongolia. They were also in war killing Turkic Khaganate ( GoTurk ) which is the origin/ancestors of the modern Turkish people. Not much Turkish people know this, instead they think Uyghurs are their brothers, because of the western media.

    • @ebuuuu2833

So ? Gokturk khaganate and Uygur khaganate lived 1300-1500 years ago! We are live in 2019. We are not same peoples. But We are Turkic peoples.

Uighurs has a long and ancient history.
Today Chinese try to make Uighurs Chinese.
      This is not working.
Uighurs are fathers of all Turks.
China and Chinese have a power and write and rewrite history in the way, that suits Chinese.
The day when China fell the world will learn a new and real history.

@amannisa oigur oh my god, you are soo self centered, if you say so you are saying that you own the entire history and civilization of Central Asia which is really ugly and egotistic, this is a process of merging of different cultures than one possess all. 1910s origin is Persia, 1920s origin is Turk, 1930s origin is Manchu.
