Very briefly, to use the bezel:
1) Start the chronograph.
2) Stop it after you have traveled exactly one mile.
3) The number on the bezel that the second hand is pointing to indicates your speed in mph
60 is at the 12:00 position because traveling one mile in one minute would be 60mph
apologies if someone has already explained this farther down in the comments!
thank you, i'm glad you enjoyed! mine is a 2001 p-series so they have changed the box since mine came out.
Excellent review, J. Anthony. Very nice job. Congrats on this beautiful time piece.
Thank you!! I'm an honestly thrilled that you enjoyed and I appreciate you sharing your watch passion. Best
Thank you for clarifying on the El Primero for me. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!
Good point, that never occurred to me. I'll try that next time! As for the big watch trend I totally agree, I hope the days of the Breitling Super Avengers and 48mm + watches are numbered. I think 40mm is the perfect size. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and am thrilled you liked the review!
Definitely on my 'wish' list. Stunning watch. Stylish, masculine and enough shine to make my heart skip a beat.
Then i'd highly recommend for your viewing comfort that you don't watch any of my other videos. Regards.
That's the holy grail man! Awesome.
Great review, thank you for fixing the video ;)
I tried one on two weeks ago, and I gotta say, I was a little let down. IMO it didn't have that 'IT' factor IMO. I went with the sea dweller 4000, it just sat on my wrist better and was something that I love.
Hey Toni, thanks for all of the comments. I totally agree, I too save money and buy high end things when most people spend silly amounts of money on mediocre things. Its a great philosophy to have. I used to own a datejust, mine was a little different than yours, you can see my old one in my video list. Rolex's are great watches. My model looks like every other 'Daytona made after 2000 with the 4130, the only thing I don't have is the "rolex rolex rolex" printing around the inner bezel.
Nice!!
Nice one! Congratulations on that acquisition, too; I see you're pretty excited about it, and I don't blame ya!
Thanks, cool vid. I also wear it right ! !
Sweet! I just purchased the Rainbow daytona in 18k 40mm oyster perpetual
Awesome review! They're a little easier to find than you'd think if you know where to look, but you are right at least on a local level. I bought my first Rolie (a SS Submariner) almost a year ago, still waiting on my Dad's GMT-II and Datejust I'm set to inherit (the former SS, latter two-tone) and then I'll get my final Lex, the Daytona in your review for a total of a set of four! Daytona is by far my favorite of all the Rolexes. It just LOOKS COOL! Great review, thanks for putting it up!
As a watch enthusiast it pains me that so many of the people seen wearing the stainless Daytona are not the type of people I want to be associated with.
However, for me it's the most perfect watch in current production, here are a few reasons why:
1) beautiful dial design, timeless and legible.
2) perfect size at 40mm (though it actually measures 39mm), wide bezel makes it wear like a 37mm watch, so great for a range of people from small to normal sized wrists.
2.1) relatively light weight- I have a 6 3/4 inch wrist, sized for me it comes in at 122grams, my old Omega AT 8500 38.5mm was much heavier and much thicker.
2.2) minus the crystal it's quite thin at 11.2mm plus the crystal.
3) the cal.4130 is probably the best mechanical chronograph movement in terms of function: column wheel with (easily serviceable!!!) vertical clutch, balance bridge design, variable inertia balance with Breguet over-coil 'Parachrome Bleu' hairspring, 72hour power reserve, 20% less parts than rival vertical clutch chronograph movements. Mine runs at a consistent +1-2 secs/24hs.
4) resale value- it's not an investment, but in the long term your money is safe with a steel Daytona, should you need to liquidate it in an emergency.
Oh and before Rolex haters start on me, I will add I only have one other watch: a Grand Seiko hand-wound SBGW035, which I love equally and feel is also a design classic- yes some of us Daytona owners are proper watch enthusiasts too!
I hate it when a person wears a Rolex very loose almost falling off. Definitely grinds my gears. Also people who want to fill the dial and bezel with diamonds, its not a Jacob&Co watch...its a Rolex and deserves to be respected. And worst of all, which i have seen too many times, is a FAKE Rolex with real diamonds all around. Smh.
Gold63Beast A Watch with Diamonds and gold and all is the true origianl Rolex. thou the model should be woren in parties etcetc havent you seen tony Sopranos Watch?=)
Very nice, congrats.
Thank you Cesar, I really appreciate your feedback and that you enjoyed the video. I wish I too could lay claim to owning two. I couldn't have put it better, you are totally right, this is a watch for those that understand the watchmaking art. Best
Very nice watch; congrats !!
Just purchased this SS Daytona 116520 as my first rolex!! Freaking Awesome Handsome Watch!!! That's all I can say. Im proud to own this watch!!!
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful.
Nice review man.
This watch is awesome!
I had the standard Navitimer configuration with a white dial on a black crocodile strap. It has the ETA 2892 with a depraz chronograph module. Great looking watch when it worked. Good tip on the bracelet wear. I have the Daytona on a leather strap now to prevent that from happening as my desk at work has done some damage on some of my prior watches due to rubbing.
I have a professor who has this watch. Absolutely beautiful. He also has the GMT, which he more commonly wears.
Yes, the markers on the dial do light up, the Tachometer bezel does not illuminate however the dial and hands do glow in the dark when charged. To charge them you just need to expose the watch to sunlight or any light source really for a bit of time.
Thank you! I believe most attribute the popularity of the Daytona to Paul Newman. I want to say it started becoming popular in the 1970's but I can't say for sure.
Thanks for catching that issue!
Great review J. Anthony, very professional!! I own the two stainless steel Daytonas(black and white face) great watches, you can wear it with a suit or jeans and also look great!!!!!
highly coveted, this watches are only for people that really knows an appreciate what a fine watch is. thanks again for the video.
Really nice job on the video. Beautiful watch and congrats on getting the black version which I agree is the best of the two. Congrats again!
+michael ellliot Thank you!
Hi Carmine, all Daytona's are the same size, the watch wears small for it's size as the face is not any larger than it would be on a 36mm watch. The 41mm takes into account the polished bezel around the face which tends to make the watch look smaller than it is. I have a 36mm Rolex President with the same size face. The series like S, P, Z etc. only refer to year of manufacture. While there have been movement changes over the years all Daytona's of recent times (Last 25 years) have be 41mm.
nice i just bought a 2011 model. black face ss. i love it.
correct, the bezel is fixed and is used for speed calculations. Watches with a moveable bezel are often used to time individual events like how on the Submariner the bezel is used to keep track of elapsed dive time.
The classic Oyster Chronograph, very nice watch.
Hi again Anthony, as my daily routine i always watch your daytona video. This is a perfect watch to wear daily cause its nice and very rare and popular among rolex watches. I hope you one day put the white dial in and view it. You're right, a watch with gold bracelet and gold bezel is not so wise wear daily. Its just too much, in westworld you know blond ppl blue eyes and blond hair and all, those ppl always choose a watch with steel bracelet they are not that much into gold bracelets and dials
P-serial Daytona is a personal fave of mine.
Was wearing this watch as I watch the video lol
Yes it was Michigan. Novi tappers. They had a 18k gold one and the stainless watch that you have here in this video
Its enoying that they dont make more of this kinda model, im still waiting and waiting, dame
Hi mr Anthony. I have a rolex watch and the size is 41mm i wore this watch and try to wear it everytime im in a rolex retail shop. And each time this watch looks smaller and diffrent when it comes to the dial size. Are the daytona models all same even s serie and z serie and all what does the s and z serie stands for? is that something to think about when someone wants to purchase a daytona 116520?
Mine is a 2001 P-series. Early production 116520 with the 4130 movement.
Exactly right, you can find them somewhat easily if you are willing to pay a ransom for them. Took me three years to find mine at the right price.
Great watch and great reviewer much appreciated, literally i just purchased the Rolex Submariner 114060 but i am also keen in purchasing this one in a couple of years time,it looks phenomenal, enjoy your watch !!!
Yes it is, watch collecting is a never ending and expensive habit. I too know I am destined to purchase more watches. That is what life is about though, indulging and enjoying the things you love.
Idk if someone answerd you that question before but incase not ill answer it gor you. The nummbers on the bezzle r a tachymetric scale. You can measure the average speed of an object. To use it you start your Chronograph when the (for example) car starts to drive. When it has reached the distance of 1km you stop your chronograph. then you look at your tachymetric scale and look at the number where the seccond hand stopped. that gives you the speed of a moving object for km/h.
for example if your chronograph hand stops at 45 seconds your car would have traveld an average speed of 80km/h. thanks for the upload and cool vid. thanks.
awesome video! I was wondering why did yours came in the wooden box? Because i just received the same watch in white dial and it came in the green box?
Your English is very good for learning by simply watching movies. I wish i had that talent for language. Yes I do like Gucci. In regards to the question if people notice the watch the answer is not really, they would my Submariner or Datejust but the Daytona is only appreciated by those in the know, it's like having a Patek Phillipe or Vacheron Constantin and I like it that way. The only people that get excited about it really know and love watches. Stainless is the way to go investment wise!
Thank you!! I consider myself educated in that i realize i know nothing at all in the grand scheme of things. The job that payed for that watch is working in Product Support for a medical device company although I'm looking into real estate investment and automotive journalism. I actually bought my first Rolex while making minimum wage by trading watches at a profit. You want something bad enough you'll find a way on any budget or salary. Thoughts become things!
Using the Units per Hour indication is quite easy. Say you are in a car travelling at a certain speed. You would then activate the chronograph when you pass a certain mark, etc. a mile stone. You can then stop the chronograph when you pass the next mile stone, and the chronograph hand will show you your everage speed in miles per hour.
Exactly, Rolex keeps raising prices and the scarcity of the Stainless Daytona will hopefully keep the prices up. The great thing about Rolex and Patek Philippe is that if you buy well you can make money. I have always done well with Rolex, I can't say the say about my Omega's or Breitlings....and if you buy a Tag, Ebel, Movado or any other pseudo luxury brand you are essentially throwing your money away.
Which model of breitling did you own? i mean montbrillant has diffrent models you have navitimer, legende and my favourite the datora. Which im considering to buy recently, if i do...by the way a good recommendation is that dont wear the daytona so near the hand. it makes the bracelet damage everytime you pull your hand up or down wear it closer to the arm, more away from the wrist. thats the recommendation i got from my retail rolex store.
Different people measure watches differently. 40mm is actually what Rolex considers the Daytona to your point. You can wear a Datejust daily, I rotate wearing my Daytona and a 18k President. I used to own a Breitling Montbrillant and really liked it but i had many issues with it. I sold it and any other pieces that used an ETA movement. I now only buy watches with in-house movements. Just my thing, not that i have anything against ETA / Valjoux and the like.
Yes, thats typical me, I always speculate " if i chosen right colour etcetc" I still think that your video overcome other videos on youtube, cause your is much more clear. Most celebrity people even actors or i remember the russian millionare who wanted to buy saab the car manufacture, he had a daytona with black dial on his arm. Most of daytona owners have black dial. Nothing wrong with black but i still think twice before purchase, better safe than sorry hu?=) hehe like american says...
Yeah, i watch a lot of breitlingsource's videos, he gets some nice pieces in. And I agree, life is short and is best enjoyed indulging in ones passions. I buy all of my expensive pieces second hand at a significant savings (usually, anyway) and still get a one year warranty on them. It pays to buy pre-owned. I buy mine from online and retail stores with good BBB ratings and that operate a physical store location.
=) thanks!
Hi again. I didnt noticed it before but I still have to ask... does the ore metal index figures on the dial light up in dark rooms. I saw a Picture on google that showed a Daytona with green spots round the dial. I didnt Think a Daytona did it...cool
face color doesn't really play a part, the best way is to examine the movement or take it to an authorized dealer to be inspected. You would also do well to really study the model in question and get familiar with its features.
Thanks for the tip, just a bad habit i picked up. Thanks for letting me know, this could become an issue with stretch on my President. This being a stainless watch should not be an issue.
Leaving las vegas brought me here!
Michigan Tappers? If so I have been in that store a million times, I lived in that area for years.I have seen several stores that have the gold and two/tone Daytonas. I have never seen a stainless one in the store.
the beezel is not suposed to move? thnx
All Daytona's to my knowledge are 40mm. They tend to look smaller in person because the bezel surrounding the face is stainless so it blends in where on a Submariner it's black and stands out. The Daytona has been around since the 60's and was always that size so it's tradition. I do wish it was a bit bigger sometimes but oh well. It is a good investment too, I always buy watches that I can sell for a profit when i get sick of them. The ones I loved lost money...have to find a balance.
I was going to do that. Other then that its a great video and Im happy for you for getting it. There was some hints that I could be offered one second hand in great condition ;) .
Did you get a White face added in your box? I know that the Watch is preowned but didnt the saler give you a White face too? Do you know if the Rolex retail also adds a White face into the box, if someone with a black face wants to replace dials?
Drink a shot every time JA says "gorgeous" :)
I'm Italian with black hair and brown eyes and prefer the steel bracelet =). Still i get what you're saying. Glad you enjoyed the video that much!
The bezel is fixed and designed to calculate speed over a fixed 1km distance. So, a little inconvenient because you need a fixed 1km distance, but basically you use it with the second timer. Car passes starter mark you start the second hand. When the car passes the 1km mark you stop the second hand. If that has taken 12 seconds according to the bezel, then it shows the car was doing 300kph. Let's say it took 45 secs, means it was doing 80kph. It is most useful for salt flats, average 1km speeds
Correct, it was purchased certified pre-owned.
Did you get the white dial with your daytona, cause what i understand the retail store gives a daytona to their customer with the second dial to go with it... but you bought yours preown that means second hand by another owner and i dunno if he gave you a white dial too? Do you wear your daytona daily and even shower and all? My last question is how long has the daytona been popular? since paul newman wore it or like 15-20 years? have you researched it?
Using the tachymetre on the watch is actually quite simple. Racetracks and even most highways have mile markers, just start the chrono when you pass a mile marker, and stop the chrono when you pass the next mile marker. Wherever the second hand of the chrono is pointing will indicate your average speed for that mile. Thats why 60 is at 12 o'clock. Betcha can't guess where the 120 mark is
Mr O'Reilly I can confirm that this model is very hard to find in a Rolex retail store, I live in Europe and in the capital city which i visited couple Rolex stores they could only put me in a waiting list for this watch whater it was the white dial or the black dial and a waiting list can be for long as 6months or 1 year depending on which retail store. They normaly have a daytona so you wear and try on but not to purchase only try on...
Let me start off by saying I understand and agree with all you said, life flies by, the world is way too big and amazing to spend your short life primarily in one place and I think the greatest disease of our time is people getting stuck in boring, unfulfilling jobs which is something we share in common. Funny you find Sweden boring, i would think Stockholm and other cities there would be amazing. My company used to have a Stockholm office and many of the employees loved it there.
In regards to the Rolex Daytona In House( 4130), in what year did they first come out with the Fat Hands? I believe that when the first 4130 Rolex Daytonas came out in 2000, they still had the thinner hands. Also, in what year did the Rolex Daytona come out with the polished lugs and bracelet? Thanks.
+Secretariat My understanding is that those changes roled out with the 4130 movement and the first serial to include the 4130 was the P-series which I believe would make it late 2000 - 2001.
=), i'm glad you see America that way. I forget how lucky i am to live here.....New York is amazing by the way, I have family there and visit often. I actually hope to live there one day. Fear not, i believe if you want something bad enough you will find a way to get it.
Anthony, what year is your SS ROLEX DAYTONA BLACK FACE? THE ONE ON THIS VIDEO?
hehe nice just aim the dial at the lamp then switch off.. cool. too bad the retial stores I´ve been contact with havent any in their store. looks like i just have to wait months hehehehe. I noticed that watches cannot stay polished and clean forever, even if I dont use my Rolex often it seems that it gets dirty and it get very very tiny scratches. That means its impossible to wear them on occasions and keep them 100% clean from scratches. Do you agree?
You've probably already figured it out: It looks to me as though you start the chronograph (while at a constant speed) and when you travel a measured distance, you stop it and read how many of those distances you can travel in an hour.
I bought a 2002 Y series - everything is spot on - except the back. Where yours has the small dash marks on the back it has a thicker raised part before it goes flat than mine. Mine looks a bit thinner in that part between the dashes and the flat. Should that be any concern? Thank you.
+Jeremy Conte Without seeing a picture of it hard to know. This being a video it may be hard to compare to yours unless you had both in person. Did you get the original warranty papers? If so, does the serial # match the one on the case?
I dont - Just the original rolex green plastic tag with barcode. I also have taken the strap off - seen the serial number on the correct side. May take it in for ease of mind - so far I can't find anything about it to be fake. Feels real - has good weight, second hand functions work perfectly. But did buy it through ebay from a jewelry store but with a very big perfect ebay record. Thank you for this video though, I learned a lot.
+Jeremy Conte Thank you and best of luck.
It has gold on the brace? Mine is fake
I can't speak to where you live, but every dealer I have been to has the two tone or solid gold version. The stainless version 116520 is very limited production compared to other Rolex watches like the Datejust and Submariner.
i can't comment on the platinum ones but it is certainly more rare than the solid gold and two tone ones.
Thanks men. Sadly my trip get Little later cause the Boston Marathon incident. Hehe everytime i wanna get somewhere I seem to Jinx the Place cause something Always happen to the country.=) same thing happen after a discussion about Thailand, couple Days later water was overflowing the cities=) hehe. You´re right things should be shared and Life should be sorrounded with family and Children, yes thats happiness. Im so determined god I love that country.
I got this watch for Christmas, I didn't know it was so rare that's exciting.
how much did it cost? was it new or used one?
Carmine Friendly I honestly didn't ask that many questions... my father gave it to me. I heard my brother say something that it was in the ballpark of $20k but I don't know much more than that, it's rude to talk about money so I can't really go and ask.
Ray Galan Im sorry in our Culture we Always leave a present with the receipt so the birthday boy or girl can appreciate the present more in this case a Rolex Watch should have a box and papers so the new owner can use those doceuments for service the Watch and etcetcetc. Cause im myself Rolex Watch owner and each Watch has it own papers ofor autentc etcetc its strange that you didnt have all that. On my mothers birthday i gave her a Louis vuitton bag (even that she doesnt appreciate it) i also showed her the recepit so she can Insurance it and all and even appreciate the price of the bag which was not cheap at all.
Yeah, I suppose it varies by culture. In my culture we never leave the receipt and we cross out the price (we get gift receipts of returns etc). It's suppose to be the sentiment that counts not the price tag, and how bad would it look if someone gave you a Rolex and you gave them a tie... I think he has all the documents and what not, I opened it when he gave it to me put it on and I left the box and everything in at his house because I had had a few more than I should've, haha.
Ray Galan Purpose of giving recipts is also includes that "if you dont like it change it or give it back and receive the cash" but also a warranty cause íf you wanna sale the Watch and the new owner wants recept you cannot refuse him a recept to a Rolex Watch, that recept open doors to warranty and autentic and autorazation retail stores, my mother Always refer Money intead of a Watch as all women in the World. a present should come from the heart not by cash i mean im not her uncle right=) hehehe i gave her the recept so she could appreciate the present as i said it wasnt cheap. with the LV bag i normally never buy ppl a expensive present like that. enjoy the Daytona im still at waiting list, i cant take it anymore=) I want my Daytona black dial now now
If you can't get this, just get the 50th anniversary platinum version - lots for sale in dealers!
Nice piece, its very beautiful, This one is a keeper?=) Do you know how long this one has been popular among rolex watches?
This watch smells quality! Enjoy it with good health
This is the exception to the rule. Google the luxurytyme
review of the 116520, this watch has cult status among Rolex collectors and I know of several dealers that were only selling them to customer's when they spent $100,000 in the store.
Believe me, i wish i spoke Italian and certainly would love to learn French! And yes, i was speaking only of apartment cost. I think rent can exceed the monthly cost of actually owning a place. I don't know how the cost of groceries compares, food in Manhattan is much more expensive than outside of the city, you pay a premium for everything in the city. And yes, I was born in the US, not Italy for better or worse. I was born in the state of Michigan. Where are you living?
So the steel version is more rare than the gold and platinum ones?
Yes sir. We only live once, and never ever come back again. We are more or less a distant memory for most people in the world. A watch is something that i enjoy more than a vacation. An expensive watch stays for generations more than a job and a girl does=) I dont mean that people should stop living, im just saying why not live well and have better lifequality even when it comes to expensive things. I love to spoil myself. My favorite brands among waches are obviously Rolex and Breitling.
Hehehe I thought you were italian, for like 70% sure hehehe. I like italians the look, names, food dont forget the clothes and the cars. You ppl are the colour in a picture called usa. I´ve always wanted to live in us, nearest i came is by television hehehe. The video is as always a inspiration. Its very difficult to decide which dial is better, whie or black cause both has very good personality.
Would you know on what year did they start using the Blue Parachrom spring with the Daytona? Wasn't it some time in 2005? I believe, before that they were using a Gray Parachrom pring with the Daytona when it first came out in 2000. Anyway, what is so special about the Parachrom spring? And lastly, what are the advantages of the Blue Parachrom spring over the Gay one? Is there a big difference between the Blue and the Black? Thanks.
+Secretariat Your knowledge is similar to mine. All 4130 Daytona's starting in 2000 use the parachrome hairspring and you are correct in 2005 that a blue version debuted. The blue version has an oxide coating that costs more to manufacture but leads to better rate stability in theory. The parachrome hairspring is anti-magnetic thus it isn't affected by magnetic fields. It is also in theory more shock resistant than a traditional hairspring.
+J. ANTHONY Thanks a lot for for all your replies. Really appreciate them.
+Secretariat Thanks for your support, I always enjoy talking about watches with anyone that appreciates them.
oki no problem. I guess No I know that mr Anthony enjoys the choreograph for viewing. When time comes he will learn how to use them.
Well my friend as carmine friendly said "hope it stays popular forever" The black dial is amazimg the white one too. i personally would choose the black dial too. I visited a rolex shop recently and they didnt have one daytona for even a show. The Guy said " I will have one on monday but hey i cant sell it to you just show i"t. *Laughing out loud* They dont even sell that watch for discunt, cause it sells quick.
You can get one too. =) I recommend this model instead for the two tone or any gold watches, this is discreet, popular and can be wore everyday, gold watch is too much precious and too nice to wear daily. Believe me I know. Dont forget that rolex wacthes of this type are a very good invest and rolex always increase their prices with 5-10% every year. Good luck you need it
The breitling montbrillant datora which i will buy from a retail store, are a shinny watch and the black dial makes it more shinny. Those two things attract me to the model the name and the shinny dial. Breitlingsource has it uploaded ony youtube check it out if you can, but viewing it just from a camera is unfortunality not enough for me to purchase it, i really need to check it out more closly. I never thought i would buy another watch after my rolex but it seem to be inevitable=)
It would be better if you turned your back to the window, so the light would come from behind and camera wouldn't had so many problems with auto focusing. But about the watch, amazing review, I can totally understand why were you so excited. All that big watches trend that's been going on for a while now, this one is still able to resist it with the well known design.
