3 yrs. after this video and I am just trying the snowflake mitten. Your demo for carrying the contrast yarn is so clear..I have done a lot of knitting in my 86 yrs. around the sun and really appreciate your clear video instructions. Seaons greetings and all the best in 2022..love your cat, too!
This is amazing - I found this video( accidentally ) - Jana - it gave me confidence to knit.. I did a buff / neck warmer with snowflakes - now making these mittens... PLEASE can you do fair isle jumper- sloth series - if people do not want , they can do without a pattern/ or if they want with a pattern , in the same way you did here. I learnt to read the description of knitting patterns - Thanks . You are very encouraging
I have found that the tutorial on the Marly Bird youtube channel is terrific for learning how to weave in for Faire Isle. I had to watch it a few times to get it but that is the beauty of RUclips!
I wonder why I never thought of trapping every stitch! I "learned" to trap every 3-4 stitches, and have found even that small "float" annoying sometimes. Your explanations are clear and more "neighborly" than other tutorials I've watched. Glad I found you!
Hi there, just found your video. What kind of needles are those. They look comfortable to handle and what size. Do you always do a swatch before starting your mitten. Thanks Dorothy
Right.... I'm familiar with them. They're great! Honestly though, I'm pretty sure it was Cat Bordhi that first came up with that "generational" idea for teaching right and left increases. She has a video here on RUclips that is over 10 yrd old. It's certainly possible that A & C learned it from her ;)
You are a Great Teacher! However, I somehow ,with the working yarn on right hand needle got my work going inside( not on the outside)😂😂😂😂continental knitter, ( just caught this starting the gusset.) I sure hope I'm making sense. Ty
I've done the beg. Gusset now continue to the end of that row and connect? THEN , knit right through the gusset and keep knitting or stop right after the 3 stitches ( for gusset)? Ty love your tutorial and casted on 48 so I can follow your snowflake? Ty
Lol I did both right instead of left because in the info page tincan has they say right before the market and left after the market and both are increases r before the marker, I was trying to wait but I have to get the mitten donexand wash so send to my mom, so I will do the left fist then the right and see if it makes much difference in looks both rights don't look to bad, just the first on looks bumpier. Lol and it is the first time to doing mittens.
I'm reviewing the instructions for Round 3 in the thumb gusset portion of the instructions on page 2. It says m1, knit to marker, m1, sm, knit to end of the round. I interpret that to mean that you make one (using your preferred method) at the beginning of the round, then knit to the marker, make another stitch there, then slip the marker and knit on. In the tutorial on her website, under the photo of her hand with the triangle drawn there, she says she works a M1L first, then a M1R at the marker. I'm wondering if maybe you're thinking of how we did the increases before and after the marker for the yoke of the Harvest sweater?
What's the advantage of casting on 1 stitch after the thumb gusset vs increasing a stitch in the first thumb gusset round to get the stitch count back after using one "live" stitch in the thumb gusset?
I am doing the mittens but I am using worsted weight yarn and 40 stitches and double pointed needles I don't think that the large snowflake will fit. How can I find a snow flake that will fit the 40 stitches and me using the worsted weight yarn
The link doesn't work for the chart. 😢 I know it's been 5 years since you posted this video. Any way I can find the chart that will fit the back of the mitten? Thanks!
This is the best explanation of carrying the contrasting color and trapping it I've ever seen. It's so clear and easy to follow. I can't wait to get started on these gloves! Thank you so much for this tutorial.
You might try shuffling your work on your dpns so that the increases are not at the beginning or the end of a needle? Can you explain the trouble you're having?
This is EXACTLY what I needed Jana, I’ve been trying to make mittens for the past week, I love your tutorials and your thorough teaching and this simple pattern have made it possible. Thank you? I’ve found a GORGEOUS free pattern for a cable mitten but try as I might I’ve not managed to get past the first few rows after the cuff, I’ve made cables before but not from a chart, the increases have thrown me. Have you any plans to do a sloth cable mitten ? I’ve recommended your videos on the FB groups I belong to. Regards from East Yorkshire 🇬🇧 x
Can you explain the m1Right and left. You don't explain it like you do everything else. I'm making the same mittens and do you start the first increase with a leaning left or right,?
There are a couple of different way to do the increases. You might find these videos helpful: ruclips.net/video/tWofwJUeBsg/видео.html ruclips.net/video/nOpYqk-_Q78/видео.html
Jana, I ended up with 17 thumb stitches on row 18 rather than 21 and wondering if I need to add 2 sts again on row 21 or just start separating those 17 for the thumb at row 21. Maybe 19 is too much for the thumb as not for a large hand but my gdtr had asked if I could line the mittens for extra warmth.
the link to that snowflake doesn't seem to work. It takes me to your site but none of the pattern buttons work. ?? Is there another way to get the snowflake pattern? Thanks.
Thank you for this excellent explanation. Can you give any tips on how to keep the yarn that is being floated from showing through? I’ve restarted three times bc I feel like it shows too much.
Right.. as I said in the video, you probably need to carry the floats over the course of 2-3 stitches and then stagger where you "trap" the yarn so that its not at the same point as in the row below.
Hi Jana, When doing the smaller snowflake in worsted weight, do you count from the first stitch after the thumb marker or from the first stitch on the row? I'm at row 3 and find myself with too many stitched on my left needle after the colour section. BTW, great demo of how to carry a float!!
If I'm understanding your question correctly, you'll want to begin counting the stitches on the chart from the first stitch after the thumb marker. You don't want to include the thumb gusset in your count, since those stitches increase.
Thank you for the great tutorial! I'm using the KFB increase which uses 2 live stitches the first time I increase for the thumb gusset. So do I need to cast on 2 stitches instead of 1? I've tried casting on 2 stitches with backwards loop and the stitches there end up so loose. It's like I can't draw up the first round after the gusset tight enough with those backwards loops on the back needle, and I end up with a sloppy looking area. Any suggestions would be most welcome! Can I just make 2 increases instead of casting on 2 stitches?
@@PurlTogether Thank you for the quick reply! Sorry, I meant I do 2 KFBs for the first gusset increase, and these use 2 live stitches, so I lose 2 stitches from the hand portion of the mitten, which I then need to cast on after putting the thumb stitches on a holder.
When we increase on one side, then pattern on the other side of the right mitten, would we put the pattern on the same side as the increase for thw left hand and would we start the chart after the marker? Or would we make the increase at the other end?
When I start the left one for the tutorial, I'm going to choose to do the thumb gusset first, as written in the pattern, then the chart right after the marker.
I absolutely cannot get the make-1 part right. I end up with gigantic loops on the next round. I end up with holes. This is insane, I taught myself to knit socks and turn heels on dpns for haven's sake, and I do perfectly beautiful socks... but I cannot get this stupid make-1 down! I'm losing it, what am I doing wrong??
You'd need to use the smaller snowflake since the medium size using worsted weight required a cast on of 28 st, so you'd have 14 on each needle. Or you can search Pinterest, Ravelry or Google for another smaller motif.
Thanks, I really thought that! But somehow was hoping that you had a magic solution😂! I’ve decided to drop what I have done and go up to the large as I think with my tighter gauge and the colourwork, I’ll be ok!
@@PurlTogether yes, I casted on 36...so I had 18 on each and the pattern was for 24 I think. For the large motif. My brain wasn't working so i just ended up finishing it plain.

I'm not sure there is an advantage, I think it's just another way of doing it.

You'd need to use the smaller snowflake since the medium size using worsted weight required a cast on of 28 st, so you'd have 14 on each needle. Or you can search Pinterest, Ravelry or Google for another smaller motif.
