Its hard enough trying to beat Newcastle at their place given our recent results against them, but when you have a player sent off so early in the game it becomes almost impossible. If both sets of fans are being fair I'm sure they'd agree that the Duran challenge was a yellow at best. In my opinion the challenge was completely unintentional. The writing was on the wall when Anthony Taylor started dishing out yellow cards for innocuous challenges so early in the game.
When I first saw the challenge from my position in the crowd I thought it had to be red. Having seen tv replays of Duran’s ankle rolling and knowing that experience of wanting to get your other foot down as quick as possible, I think maybe a red was harsh. Unfortunately for Villa the ref, who had a shocker, doesn’t get the replays and I don’t think VAR was ever going to go against the original decision.
Toon fan, was at the game today. Nice to hear some sense and interesting to hear an away perspective. Duran's red card very harsh, but I do feel we would have won comfortably as our midfield bossed it, especially Tonali. All the best
@@nickybremner9183 An honest Toon fan! I think you were very lucky with the Duran decision, and several of your players did no more than Bruno Fernandes today and should have gone.

I'm interested in hearing what people think about VAR looking at the red card incident. We hear a lot about fans wanting VAR to go along with on-field decisions, but time after time we are left in situations like this where nobody can agree
The fact that so many Villa fans are saying it was a ref says it all. Was it the most obvious red, no, was he falling, yes, but to make out he couldn’t avoid the contact and the kick out with his right leg is silly
Absolutely zero chance the red gets overturned. Rodgers pretending he got slapped in the face needs to be discussed more... don't like seeing that, he's way better than that.
Toon fan here. I was So up for this game today. Sadly the tension was released due to that red card. Was it red, i dont know, I think he could have avoided stepping on him but the red killed the game nevertheless. Up until that red card it was a great game.
Never a red and they were far too quick to give it. The officials were giving Newcastle every decision anyway so wasn't surprising. They killed the game from that early stage and got what they wanted really. Without that though I still think Newcastle were the better side. They just looked far more physical than we did and I think that shows we need to buy some strong players and particularly a RB.
We do need to begin talking seriously about the continuing sliding standards in our refs. Managers should be able to challenge some decisions in the game, like in American Football, where the officiators don't get many key decisions wrong. We've lost several points this season because of refs.
@rowan5109 Nope. Clearly not a red, probably not even a yellow, in fact Schar tripped Duran, made his left ankle go over and caused the whole things by being out of position. Schar should also have been booked for his shirt tug on Cash just a minute before, instead he won a free kick. The problem with what you've said is that if you put results above proper refereeing then the game will continue to disimprove. As Villa fans we care about the purity and fairness of the game, we genuinely do. It's probably because we invented league football and gave it to the world. We've also won a large number of trophies fairly.
