    These were an extremely enjoyable 47 min. I discovered traditional wet shaving many years ago after having had enough of razor burn and ingrown hairs for using a cartridge razor during my teen years.
    My current setup:
    - Parker shavette style razor + feather blades
    - proraso shaving cream and aftershave (white product line)
    - block of alum (I find this essential because it soothes the skin and takes care of any little cut)
    One thing that I found out during the years is that I prefer to shave at night after a nice shower. It allows me to shave without any rush and gives my skin time to relax during the night.
    Cheers

    • @RaoulKunz1
      @RaoulKunz1 2 года назад

      I concur with the enjoyability of the feature!
      I also *absolutely* agree with your shaving setup!
      Mine is:
      - Franksteined safety razor from razors I honestly don`t remember
      - Astra blades
      - occasionally a Solingen made gold etched (just pretty, no function) open razor (good for getting the beard silhouette done)
      - Yes! The same Proraso products - their shaving soap of the white line is divine - no skin irritation whatsoever!
      - also the alum block of course!
      - (currently) Captain Fawcett Expedition Strength Moustache Wax to get the moustache fixed
      - Mr Bear Family Beard balm Woodland
      - Badger shaving brush, though they tend to die eventually, it's the third right now
      I've come to shave right before showering and add the skin care right after because it opens up the pores.
      Best regards

    Interesting you'd mention cars, as I was actually in a minor accident a mere few hours ago. (I'm fine!) I was being a dumbuss and got in a cosmetic-level bender. No ticket thankfully, and in true chap fashion, I owned up to it completely. This was my first real accident ever in over five years of driving. Not too shabby, I'd say.
    I found the mention of UK and US differences between khakis and chinos fascinating! As an American, I can confirm that khaki is the ultimate color of chino here. In fact, I was under the impression that it was the nature of chinos to be khaki, the garment term "khaki" was synonymous with "chino," and any other colors were an unusual bit of personality. Please don't fault me for my lack of trouser knowledge - I pretty much exclusively wear suit trousers with less formal stuff for price and aesthetics.
    Thank you for answering my question! Your answer was reassuring to me. My penmanship isn't that great, and I worry about how I'll be percieved when I send letters and notes in inelegant print. Throughout my childhood, I struggled with handwriting, partially because of a coordination disorder called dyspraxia. To this day, I can't use fountain pens due to the delicate pressing they require. My handwriting today is comfortably legible, but nothing fancy. I'm glad to know you feel that's perfectly fine.

    Great advise on the balding and grooming. My personal opinion on that, is to go the way of not using hair pieces, just groom yourself well and you would be happier. It would cost less, and less work overall. You could always grow the remaining hair out and get the hair piece later if you can't stand the more natural look.
    I am now into my fourth month of using double edge shaving razors. It is not a fast method, but it does offer a better result and I enjoy the process.

    Great video, Ash. Thanks for posting. I've been shaving the traditional way for a number of years ago and haven't looked back. Disposable razors, particularly the multi-blades, cause no end of trouble with one's skin: razor burn, bumps, ingrown hairs, to name but a few. Because the disposables are so light, quite a bit of pressure is needed to cut the whiskers, and this can lead to hair being cut underneath the skin, and ingrown hairs are the result. Granted, it takes a few weeks to really getting the knack of shaving with a 'proper' razor, but it's well worth the time and the inevitable nick now and then. Anyone who has moved over from disposables to single or double edge safety razors, will tell you that in a few weeks of use, one's skin improves and becomes easier and easier to shave, without all the dreaded complications that the little throwaway plastic monsters create.
    One carefully chosen safety razor will last a lifetime. Razor blades are cheap and can be bought online at a fraction of the cost of disposable razors, so moving over to traditional wet shaving will save loads of dosh in a lifetime. When I say that it will save you lots of lolly, I mean that it will if you don't fall down the 'rabbit hole' (like most of us do) and end up with numerous different razors, blades, brushes, creams, soaps, croaps, aftershaves, balms ... you get the picture. Indeed, traditional wet shaving using vintage and modern razors has become a popular hobby in the UK, and even more so in the USA, and there are many RUclips channels devoted entirely to this method of shaving. Here is a link to Paul H Films, which is the best UK traditional shaving channel for learning about traditional wet shaving ruclips.net/user/PaulHFilms
    Once again, thanks for posting this video, Ash. I hope you will make more shaving-related videos in the future.

    What a great format - shave and a chat. Can we have more of these Ash?
    My razor of choice is also the Rockwell 6S, although I'm not brave enough to go to setting 6! I set mine on 4 and use it every couple of days. I need to switch to a shaving cream instead of a soap though as I find the soap is a little hard to work into a creamy lather.
    I would encourage the viewer with the hair piece to persist with it if it gives him confidence.

    Hi there, I wanted to make you aware that if you're looking to get some shirts, that Hilditch & Key on Jeremyn street has loads of high quality cotton shirts for like £30 per shirt. They did a factory sale where I was lucky enough to get loads of shirts for £9.99 each, and the flaws were super minimal at best. One was like a small weaving or stitching issue like misaligning the stich for the yolk. Anyways! These shirts sale for like £180 typically on that website, it does feel super soft and they use mother of pearl buttons. So I'd say the prices I got for it was a complete steal.
    I got myself load of their winchester styled shirts with colours like teal, orange, and red for like £30 each. I replaced my whole Charles Tyrwhitt wardrobe with their shirts now lol. I really needed some good quality shirts that fitted and I was lucky enough to come across it. I have a total of 22 HK shirts now or something? I probably have the most shirts in my wardrobe in the post code area.
    I really need to stop buying shirts... but it was a good deal! So its hard to say. At least I'm not one of those guys who purchases a Ralph Lauren shirt for £100 despite it being made in places like China and doesn't really show much for quality really then compared to a luxury M and S shirt. Plus I hate that embroidery too.
    Oh yes and thanks to your videos I decided to get a double-edged razor in the end. A dramatic difference, I also think my acne is virtually gone now since using it. It could be due to better facial hygiene standards, but I think the typically razors really cause a lot of irritation on my face, and double edged razors simply does not do any of that.

    Regarding thinning hair, check with a dermatologist. I’ve recently read that a low dose minoxidil pill can have good hair growth results.

    I think that my razor is the same one I first shaved with in the 1960s. I tried cartridges for a while but never really liked them. My preferred shaving mug is what is sometimes called a Santa Fe style mug -- basically just a small ceramic bowl to hold a cake of shaving soap.
    As someone from the US southwest, I do have a question that may be obvious to you British, but not to me: Just what do you mean by a "chap"?

    • @TheChapsGuide

      A 'chap' is simply another term for gentleman in my parlance. Simply that.

      No. Reuzel is still my favourite to date, but I have a huge collection of creams to use, so I still use those from time-to-time.

    Shaving with these old school razors is the only sensible way...I use a Merkur and some Astra blades. It costs almost nothing. And it's smooth. Supermarket plastic razors are the biggest con ever

      Astra are also my favourite blades, I used them in a Merkur and also have a Rockwell.

    What is the Chap’s view of using combat sports and skills (boxing, wrestling, Judo, kickboxing, BJJ, Sambo, fencing, pistol/rifle craft) as vehicles for self development?

    • @pasquale78
      @pasquale78 2 года назад +1

      Hi! I’m not as Chap as Ash, but I try. I practice Tang Soo Do and I find that it helps me live my life and how I treat other people. TSD practitioners live by 5 codes or guidelines. The Five Codes of Tang Soo Do are loyalty to country, obedience to parents, honor friendship, no retreat in battle, and in fighting choose with sense and honor. Now these codes were taken quite literally back in the days of old Korea, but today they translate to more modern meaning.
      Besides this, the sport made me more confident about myself and taught me that with hard work you can achieve anything. After 6 tough years I became a first degree black belt. Does this answer your question?

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 года назад +3

      Great question - I will answer this rather more fully in a future Q & A video I'm planning, but anything which sharpens the mind and body must be a great idea for any chap seeking nirvana!

      @@TheChapsGuide I look forward to hearing your thoughts. It’s a broad enough subject that you could easily do an entire video or series on it. These skills and practices are often presented in an aggressive or macho way, I’d love to see them through the Chap’s eye.

    Just to let you know the Jaguar was an F-Type, not an X-Type. Probably just a slip of the tongue. Good choice, though. My father and I are both Jaguar fans, he's had five but is without at the moment. I'm trying to get my first. But strangely I too own a VW.

    I've been shaving with a double edged safety razor since the woke grossly insulting Gillette advert.
    Which got me into vintage aftershaves and razors.
    I usually do two passes in different directions during my shaves.
