    Deadly enough to destroy space and time, black holes get a bad rap but recent images reveal a very different picture. Dr Becky Smethurst peers into the supermassive black at the centre of our own galaxy and those nearby to reveal how they could have responsible for the birth and creation of our entire galaxy.

    4:17 the black holes are essential to keeping the galaxies together, without all that mass i'd imagine the galaxy would end up a lot smaller, think of it as an massive anchor keeping everything from drifting away

      Well, actually black holes’ gravity is not powerful enough to hold the galaxy. The analogy that black hole and the stars of our galaxy are similar to our Sun and the planets is false. The thing that holds the galaxy together is called dark energy.

      dark matter, not black holes. Black holes' gravity is incredibly small compared to the galaxy. Although there is a hypothesis that black holes create dark matter.

    You forgot to mention that Prof. Andrea Ghez shared the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics with the German Astrophysicist Reinhard Genzel of the Max Plank Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and also the British mathematician Roger Penrose. Andrea Ghez and Reinhard Genzel did the same Work each one with his Team on the same Black Hole. I think that Reinhard Genzel had finished and Published his Results a few Years earlier than Andrea Ghez.
    Later on, they published as co-authors a Paper where they combined their Findings (hence the Nobel Prize). For such big Discoveries it is necessary for the Results to be substantiated by more than one Team, regardless of the exact Time of Submission.

      But always remember that the universe didn't get made until Vishnu woke Brahma and told him it was time to get it started again. Shiva was presumably having a rest having had to pack the previous universe away.

    I'm not convinced on how a black hole really looks yet. I believe you can see through the event horizon in patches and flashes but can't actually get near it

    Pretty bold claim to say that a supermassive black hole lie in the center of EVERY galaxy, perhaps for all spiral and elliptical galaxies but probably not for irregular galaxies.

      well, there's an old video on her channel where she talks about the hundred years worth of theoretical and observational research, experiments, simulations etc that allows her to make that claim.. worth checking:

      Irregular galaxies have supermassive black holes. Their shapes are not indicative of wether or not they have one.

    I don't quite get the illustration at 5:36. Parts of the cloud disappeare close to the black hole but they're not past the event horizon yet. What's happening?

      I think the gas disappears into the accretion disc, if you look closely the gas accelerates counterclockwise just as it "disappears"

      I believe that this illustrates the gas cloud's ("G2" ?) trajectory which was mentioned just after the animation which was not completely swallowed up by the super massive black hole, which is inside the galaxy where earth is located ("Milky Way"). The cloud was "redirected" from its original travel path by the gravitational pull the black hole has exerted on it and in the animation you see it travel downwards after the event. Seemingly also some of its gas content was absorbed however in the process which then swirls around the black hole (the zone which is called its "event horizon") before it disappears inside it.
      Now I wonder why exactly this gas cloud ended up so near to the black hole though? Do gas clouds tend to wonder about much inside a galaxy?

      I don't know the details of this particular footage but remember with a black hole you are seeing light under the effects of gravitational lensing as it follows geodesics. You're simultaneously seeing the front and back, a point source behind a black hole would appear as a ring around it.

    I saw the world end yesterday, the black whole looked like 3:21 the sky was red and cloud was moving so face and a weird way and there was lot of lighting. The gravity was so strong it was pulling my body then it stopped for a second and I couldn’t breathe then it started back again with the gravity pulling me

    I have 2 qestions. Will you still come out of a black hole if you cant see the univ3rse anymore but with a material that lets you out?and what happends if you just entered a black hole wnd you still can see the universe,but the black hole explodes?what will happen

      Think of it as a ball and not an actual hole. You can't really go into it because it's not a hole rather a ball with crazy amounts of gravity swallowing/sucking anything in its path to itself and compressing it down infinitely to the size of an atom and beyond

    Black hole could be a vaccum hole used by another galaxy in a different dimension to utilise it’s energy resources.

    5:17 How can a Black Hole form first before any star, if what they need to become one is precisely a huge amount of collapsing matter?
    Where did that matter come from to form those primordial Black Holes?

      This is all conjecture but our best theories suggest that the early universe was tiny, like insanely tiny, but it was not completely uniform. Some parts had a bit more matter than other parts and these pockets could have been so dense in relation to the rest of the young universe that they were able to collapse and become a black hole long before any stars could form. Primeordial black holes as they're called would be way smaller than any black holes we can observe (probably the size of a proton), and none of them have ever been proven to exist.

I read not long ago about a theory pointing out that what the scientist are calling Planet 9/Planet X, might be in fact one of those primordial black holes, about the size of an orange, hence why we couldn't see it yet, though its gravity is big enough to have an influence over the rest of bodies in the Solar System. Could it be possible?

    Very disappointing that most of these videos are being sensationalized to get views. This video starts with saying you can actually take a picture of a black hole and they are not all black, and then the explanation goes on to define/explain about the gas around it. No one ever said gas falling into a black hole will have the same properties of the black hole. What we are looking at is the impact or influence of the black hole not the object itself.
    Just to cover some possible counter points
    - if we claim that gas orbiting around the black hole (what we can see and image) is part of the black hole then by using the same logic the entire galaxy itself is one object. Since it's bound by the same gravitational force.
    - if we claim that the gas is akin to its atmosphere hence part of the black hole. Then I would have to say that an atmosphere needs to be stable-ish discounting external influence (held in place by gravity). And we know based on past studies that these discs only stay for a short time after getting a bit too close to the black hole, eventually passing beyond the event horizon or ejected out. (Not sure how reliable my recollection about the studies are it was a while back)

      Great! You've proved we're part of a black hole. I think you were intending reductio ad absurdum i.e. "this cannot be true for it is obviously absurd". Why is it absurd, though?

      By this logic the event horizon is the impact or influence of the BH not the object itself.

      Not proving a point on the first one. Just a response to what I have read in comments or heard from people. So unless you wanna say we too are part or the back hole then sure you can make the claim - we can photograph a BH. But then by that logic photos of my cat, too, are photos of a black hole and he is tabby (being intentionally childish to get the point accross).
      For the second point I failed to see what your argument is. I never claimed the event horizon is physically part of the object, you made that assumption. As far as my readings have taken me we do not know if there is a physical form as we can understand, potentially new particles or states. The math we know stops working.

      But in the example you gave, the car is not a representation of the black hole but rather a galaxy. The chassis would represent the black hole as it is the framework that holds it all together.
      If you can agree with that then I ask is being able to see the wheel allow me to say I can see the chassis.
      At the end of the day. My point was that the video is exaggerating and implying meaning to certain facts that are not observed. Even the press release for the article (not media coverage but the actual science community's release) says they photographed the shadow as expected from general relativity. If a black hole is surrounded by very bright matter there should be a dark patch/void/shadow. In fact to be more pedantic about it, the picture doesnt even show the event horizon as it is ~2.5x smaller than the shadow we are able to see. I refer you to the ETH press release April 10, 2019. Please make sure to read the notes as well if you decide to verify my claims and directly from their website.

      The only thing we can see with our own eyes from a black hole is its accretion disk. We literally can't see the event horizon of any black hole, and the dark region we see in the middle is only the shadow of it.

    Pretty informarive, but I liked the older styled videos. They were more xinematic and dramatic which really made me keep watching. With this lasy I just want to click off

      Agree completely. I subbed to this channel after being blown away by the unique stylistic quality, chill vibe and visuals of the original space vid series. I keep thinking they're going to make more, but I guess they've switched to a different "educational" teacher type format which makes me feel like I'm a watching a science class video.
