Pike thought that the reason she couldn't connect with The Everlight was because she was too close to her friends, and having too much fun.

She enjoys fighting, which does not seam to fit, she is not solely focused on helping, she failed at helping, she is worried, that her priorities are not good enough, keyleth and her are the only ones with a working moral compass that is not corrupted . . . that she makes excuses for them and let them influence her action was what made her insecure, not being close to someone and enjoying their company in generel
The live game basis for “Scan-bo” was even one epic because Sam Riegel genuinely had no idea how he was gonna survive and rolled beautifully to make it thru. Plus….TRICERATOPS! Sam literally asked Liam for the shittiest character, used the suggestion of a gnome bard, played with it, and became the actually MVP of the whole damn campaign thru sheer force of creative genius
"Who thought of this? Who's in the writing room?" That would be Sam Riegel, the player / voice actor for Scanlan. He is notorious for his scatological humour. Since "Scanbo" is centered around his character, he took the reins for this episode. Travis Willingham (Grog) had a hand in it, too, IIRC.
The Everlight is a goddess of redemption and second chances. Pike’s self doubt is what cut her from her faith, not her friends and what they do together. She can drink and curse and kick ass as much as she wants and still be a cleric of the everlight, if she is true to herself. Denying a pet of herself is what would sever that connection. I just love this show so much.

I wish they had kept the bit in where he realizes he has no way to make fire. It was one of the funniest parts of that sequence as he got half way through it all before announcing to the table that he has no actual means of setting the house on fire. The collective round of facepalming as the whole table realizes how dumb they all are was just perfect. Then he happened to remember he had that random firebreath potion in his bag he'd gotten several episodes earlier.

Mary Antoinett'e syndrom (her hair lost all pigmentation the night before her walk to the guillotine). That stuff is real! Lol, I can vouch personally. A random patch of my hair, all in one bunch, went white after my family had an old VW Vanagon spontaneously start of fire and then burst into a fireball when we were moving from Alaska to Washington years ago. I was 6. Fortunately, we got our pets and most of our possessions out of it before it completely went up in fire. Thank goodness for that!!

Yeah, he was just a normal bard in the campaign. And bards can charm people. But I guess they wanted to add an extra supernatural element to him in the show and gave him the gift of a literal silver tounge.
"How many arrows does it take to get Grog down?" *mental D&D math* He had some of the highest health you could get in the game (100s of HP), and a single arrow will do an average of like 4-5 damage, so the answer is... too many.
*puts on nerd glasses* I think Grog was lvl. 11 Barbarian at this point in time. According to CritRoleStats he had 145 maxHP. An arrow from a longbow does 1d8+DEX worth of piercing damage. Assuming maximum results on all damage rolls and a maximum dexterity bonus of +5, he would take 8+5=13 piercing damage per arrow. As a barbarian, Grog can use a bonus action to start raging, which halves all incoming piercing/bludgeoning/slashing damage (rounding down). If my math is correct, Grog would fall unconscious after taking 12 arrows without rage or 23 arrows while raging. Well... assuming none of those arrows hit critically, which would double their damage dice from 1d8+5 to 2d8+5 per arrow.
From your comments, I'm not sure if you forgot this or not, but the thing drawn in the clouds was the DeRollo crest. ie, the symbol of the family who was in power before her, and the symbol that the resistance has taken up.
15:44 Depending on how well Mat rolls, between 164, 82 or 10. CritRoleStats time! By this point in the campaign, Grog has 163 hit points. The Guards are using bog standard longbows, which hit for 1d8 damage plus 1 for their user's Dexterity modifier, meaning that on a hit, each arrow is doing somewhere between 2 and 9 points of damage. On a critical hit, the die get doubled, so one arrow can do up to 17 points of damage. However, while Grog is Raging, all physical damage he takes is halved, so if Matt were super unlucky and rolled the lowest damage for each hit, he would have to hit Grog with one arrow per HP.

Scanbo (as this sequence with Scanlan is often called) is hilarious. It's a bit different than the live show though. Okay, a lot different, but the live show was equally as chaotic. In the live show, he did not believe that he had any ignition source at all (the match part was made up for the animation). He did have a potion of fire breathing (the one that lets him burp fire) but had forgotten about it until he was already being chased around and was desperately looking in his inventory. He also turned into a dinosaur much earlier as part of this sequence in the live show (and it wasn't a scroll), but they decided not to show that on the animation because the audience might ask why he never turned into a dino before that if he had the capabilities (I don't think he had the ability to do so by game rules, but the audience of an animation need not understand D&D game rules).
If I remember right, he asked if Scanlan would have any idea what one was and Matt had him roll. Either that or Matt reasoned that scanlan would have heard of one. They have a statblock, though I'm not sure if it's base DND or extra content.

So much to respond to in your reactions, as always. • Duke Vedmire is a Goliath Fighter or Ranger-- so he isn't fire-resistant (that's the word you were looking for) but he does have a lot of hit points and could handle walking through the fire. Later, you see scars from it. • Whitestone was named after the whitestone. • How many arrows would it take to put Grog down? What an interesting question. Without looking up Grog's actual stats at this time in the game, I can make some rough estimates. 9th level Barbarian x 1d12(+3 from high Con) Average hit points would be 95, but Grog was higher than that. Could be as high as 135. Higher if he has a higher CON or magic items. Those look like longbows which normally do 1d8 + STR per arrow. So, let's assume 7 points on average per arrow. So... it would take an average of 16 arrows to take down Grog-- unless he was raging, in which case it would be half damage-- so 32 arrows then. That's without healing or any magic items. • Scanlan turns into a Triceratops • In D&D, when a character goes down, they start dying. If they don't take more damage and don't have any assistance, it takes 3-5 rounds to actually die or to stabilize. That's 18 to 30 seconds. So, Keyleth has that much time to cast Cure Wounds on her. After that, it would take a higher spell like Revivify or Resurrection. • Prof. Anders is a bard, like Scanlan, so he has some charm spells. But in the animated series, the writers has the Briarwoods give him a magic item. a silver tongue from a silver tongue-devil. It seems to allow him to cast Dominate and Mass Dominate and Animate Object with really high saving throws. Yup, when it got blown out of his mouth, it tried to return to the demon that donated it. • Both Cassandra and Percy have white hair due to the ordeal with the Briarwoods. More on that in next episode. It is called Marie Antonette syndrome (I forget the scientific name.) • Yes, Amazon sprung for a 2nd season before it was even aired.
So, the pause before the healing took hold is classic Matt Mercer (DM/GM) messing with his players, letting the suspense of a seriously scary situation sit for just a bit before a big breath of relief...
I don't remember the exact terminology, but through extreme psychological/physiological strain (such as through torture) the follicle of your hair will lose their color, or something around those lines.

As for who was in the writers room, this episode was written by Scanlan and Grog's voice actors. Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham. Writers on other episodes also include the person who played "Tiny Tina" from borderlands, Ashley Burch. So that was an interesting writers room. There's a video on the Critical Role channel about the writing team.
In the campaign, Pike lost her connection to the Everlight by killing a helpless enemy in cold blood. The Dungeon Master was like, "cool cool cool, so you try to use magic? nope doesn't work any more".
Copying my long-ass comment from a different reaction about this episode: In the actual tabletop campaign, it went a bit different, but it wouldn't have worked in the show since it involved a few more D&D spells that they didn't have time to establish in advance. Here's the lengthy sequence of events: 1. Scanlan offers to go light the place on fire, Keyleth says she should do it because she can make fire really easily and also wildshape, but is largely ignored. 2. Scanlan sneaks to the place and casts Polymorph (known spell, not a scroll) to turn into a triceratops, and crashes through the front door. It's a trap; the room we see grog burst into in this episode (with the archers up above) is actually what Scanlan finds waiting for him. 3. All the other doors in the room are barred, and it's clear that the DM has intended for Scanlan to flee the area (the map does not extend beyond that room, which is telling given how much prep Matt does for battles). 4. Instead, Sam (Scanlan's player) says "I should probably flee...but c'mon guys, I'm a triceratops!" and tries to crash through one of the barred doors on the ground floor. 5. He fails to make it all the way through the door on the first try (fucking doors man), and eats a few arrows in the process. He makes it through the door on the following turn, and drops his polymorph once he's in the room. 6. At this point, the guards (and Vedmire) are rushing down the stairs at him, and are crowded in the main chamber just outside the door. Scanlan drops a Stinking Cloud spell on the lot of them, and most of them fail the save, falling over and throwing up in the process. 7. Scanlan ducks behind a table he smashed upon entering the room, and casts Dimension Door to get up to the roof, then casts Invisibility on himself. 8. At this point, Sam is looking through his sheet and saying that he doesn't actually have anything that can make fire. Marisha (Keyleth's player) remarks that this is exactly what she was talking about, and wonders how we wound up in this situation. The DM rules that Scanlan is imagining that that's what Keyleth would say if she was there to see this shitshow as he rifles through his belongings on a rain-soaked rooftop. 9. Sam finds a potion on his sheet that was obtained forever ago--before they even started streaming their home game, IIRC: a potion of fire breathing. 10. Scanlan chugs the potion and sprints to the front of the building, and argleblargs flame onto guards who've been posted at the destroyed front door (everyone in the building is searching for him at this point). 11. The front of the building starts to catch fire because the shattered wood is mostly dry on the inside, but now everyone knows there's a flaming teleporting gnome on the roof. 12. He sprints across the roof and repeats the process on the rear door of the house. 13. A hatch he failed to spot (botched Perception check) pops open on the opposite side of the roof, and Vedmire climbs out. 14. Sam panics and flips through his spell sheets while doing some math, and realizes that his spellcasting modifier is enough to push Vedmire barely off the edge with Bigby's Hand. Vedmire rolls a 1 on the contested strength check (vs 25) and basically gets shot-put off the roof. 15. Scanlan then rushes to the open hatch and breathes his last gout of flame onto guards who are climbing the ladder upward, and sets fire to the inside of the house. 16. Running low on spell slots, Scanlan runs to the edge of the roof as a second hatch opens on the other side of the roof and two guards emerge to nail him with a few arrows. 17. Scanlan falls backwards off the roof, and moves Bigsby's Hand to catch him near the ground. 18. He escapes the manor grounds, casts Invisibility and get the fuck outta there because he is almost completely tapped out.
I think you might have missed the point of Pike's Everlight conversation. She *thought* her friends were pulling her away from the Everlight, but they weren't. It was her own self-doubt that cut her off. The Everlight was straight up telling her "you don't have to be one specific type of person, or do one specific type of thing, to be my disciple; you can be whoever you want, and do what you want, as long as you're true to yourself."
Hey! I love your videos, your reactions are super unique and in depth rather than the simple "wow I really liked that" I usually see. Also, while I'm here, I recommend reacting to Severance! It's only on Apple TV as of yet, but it's a really cool and unique show with a very well made horror aspect to it. Grog's entire takeaway from being mind controlled to kill everybody else was that he had two voices and then he stabbed a tongue. Gotta love Grog.

Scanlan is small, so he has tiny legs! He had the slowest movement speed out of anyone in the group (except I guess Pike), so it's no surprise the zombies caught up...

The reason Percys hair turned white is because of real thing that happens, it’s sometimes called Marie Antoinette syndrome but the scientific term is Canities Subita. It’s caused by extreme prolonged stress and both Percy and Cassandra where held captive and tortured for months. The reason Cassandra has only the streaks of white is likely because she just adapted better to the stress, you could say just as a character trait she has a stronger will than Percy.
Percy's hair whent 'shock" white due to stress and trauma. As far as i know, cassandra didnt have a streak of white hair in the streams, this is something only in the animation, it may have been a creative decision to make something similar between the siblings. but the reason may be the same, trauma.

Ok here goes. As of C1E28 "The Sun Tree" Grog had 163 max hp (shoutout critrolestats). Rage effectively doubles that for this purpose, making it 326. Assuming the archers have longbows and a +3 dex modifier, they're doing 7.5 damage per hit on average assuming they never crit. 326/7.5=43.467. So 44 unremarkable hits. If these are really elite archers with a +4 dex mod, that goes down to 39. If someone sees this and wants to put in more effort on on it, 1/20 hits does an additional 4.5 damage. If you want to figure out hit rates, his AC at the time was 19. I figure +8 or +9 to hit is about right for the archers (3 or 4 from dex, 3 from prof, 2 from fighting style).
Hair turning white can be caused by intense stress and trauma. You can tell that Percy was more traumatise than Cassandra judging by the amount of white hair they have.
How many arrows to kill Grog? Here's the math at level 12 and 163hp with those guards shooting it'd take 86.7 arrows, double that if he's raging. Dont judge me, I'm a nerd and was curious.

He had some of the highest health you could get in the game (100s of HP), and a single arrow will do an average of like 4-5 damage, so the answer is... too many.
Plus he's raging so damage is halved.

I think Grog was lvl. 11 Barbarian at this point in time. According to CritRoleStats he had 145 maxHP. An arrow from a longbow does 1d8+DEX worth of piercing damage. Assuming maximum results on all damage rolls and a maximum dexterity bonus of +5, he would take 8+5=13 piercing damage per arrow. As a barbarian, Grog can use a bonus action to start raging, which halves all incoming piercing/bludgeoning/slashing damage (rounding down).
If my math is correct, Grog would fall unconscious after taking 12 arrows without rage or 23 arrows while raging.
Well... assuming none of those arrows hit critically, which would double their damage dice from 1d8+5 to 2d8+5 per arrow.

By this point in the campaign, Grog has 163 hit points. The Guards are using bog standard longbows, which hit for 1d8 damage plus 1 for their user's Dexterity modifier, meaning that on a hit, each arrow is doing somewhere between 2 and 9 points of damage. On a critical hit, the die get doubled, so one arrow can do up to 17 points of damage. However, while Grog is Raging, all physical damage he takes is halved, so if Matt were super unlucky and rolled the lowest damage for each hit, he would have to hit Grog with one arrow per HP.
The Everlight was voiced by Tracie Thoms, an amazing actress.

Scanbo (as this sequence with Scanlan is often called) is hilarious. It's a bit different than the live show though. Okay, a lot different, but the live show was equally as chaotic.
In the live show, he did not believe that he had any ignition source at all (the match part was made up for the animation). He did have a potion of fire breathing (the one that lets him burp fire) but had forgotten about it until he was already being chased around and was desperately looking in his inventory. He also turned into a dinosaur much earlier as part of this sequence in the live show (and it wasn't a scroll), but they decided not to show that on the animation because the audience might ask why he never turned into a dino before that if he had the capabilities (I don't think he had the ability to do so by game rules, but the audience of an animation need not understand D&D game rules).
If I remember right, he asked if Scanlan would have any idea what one was and Matt had him roll. Either that or Matt reasoned that scanlan would have heard of one. They have a statblock, though I'm not sure if it's base DND or extra content.

@@negativeview I think he had just learned polymorph, and yeah, Matt made him roll to see if he knew about dinosaurs. That being said, there are several dinosaurs that do have a base dnd stat block.

So much to respond to in your reactions, as always.
• Duke Vedmire is a Goliath Fighter or Ranger-- so he isn't fire-resistant (that's the word you were looking for) but he does have a lot of hit points and could handle walking through the fire. Later, you see scars from it.
• Whitestone was named after the whitestone.
• How many arrows would it take to put Grog down? What an interesting question. Without looking up Grog's actual stats at this time in the game, I can make some rough estimates. 9th level Barbarian x 1d12(+3 from high Con) Average hit points would be 95, but Grog was higher than that. Could be as high as 135. Higher if he has a higher CON or magic items. Those look like longbows which normally do 1d8 + STR per arrow. So, let's assume 7 points on average per arrow. So... it would take an average of 16 arrows to take down Grog-- unless he was raging, in which case it would be half damage-- so 32 arrows then. That's without healing or any magic items.
• Scanlan turns into a Triceratops
• In D&D, when a character goes down, they start dying. If they don't take more damage and don't have any assistance, it takes 3-5 rounds to actually die or to stabilize. That's 18 to 30 seconds. So, Keyleth has that much time to cast Cure Wounds on her. After that, it would take a higher spell like Revivify or Resurrection.
• Prof. Anders is a bard, like Scanlan, so he has some charm spells. But in the animated series, the writers has the Briarwoods give him a magic item. a silver tongue from a silver tongue-devil. It seems to allow him to cast Dominate and Mass Dominate and Animate Object with really high saving throws. Yup, when it got blown out of his mouth, it tried to return to the demon that donated it.
• Both Cassandra and Percy have white hair due to the ordeal with the Briarwoods. More on that in next episode. It is called Marie Antonette syndrome (I forget the scientific name.)
• Yes, Amazon sprung for a 2nd season before it was even aired.

As for who was in the writers room, this episode was written by Scanlan and Grog's voice actors. Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham.
Writers on other episodes also include the person who played "Tiny Tina" from borderlands, Ashley Burch. So that was an interesting writers room.

Percy and Cassandra have white hair because of torture at the hands of the Briarwoods. They tortured Percy a lot more than they did Cassandra.
In the campaign, Pike lost her connection to the Everlight by killing a helpless enemy in cold blood. The Dungeon Master was like, "cool cool cool, so you try to use magic? nope doesn't work any more".
Nah she could use magic just fine, the crack was just a stern warning.

Copying my long-ass comment from a different reaction about this episode:
In the actual tabletop campaign, it went a bit different, but it wouldn't have worked in the show since it involved a few more D&D spells that they didn't have time to establish in advance. Here's the lengthy sequence of events:
1. Scanlan offers to go light the place on fire, Keyleth says she should do it because she can make fire really easily and also wildshape, but is largely ignored.
2. Scanlan sneaks to the place and casts Polymorph (known spell, not a scroll) to turn into a triceratops, and crashes through the front door. It's a trap; the room we see grog burst into in this episode (with the archers up above) is actually what Scanlan finds waiting for him.
3. All the other doors in the room are barred, and it's clear that the DM has intended for Scanlan to flee the area (the map does not extend beyond that room, which is telling given how much prep Matt does for battles).
4. Instead, Sam (Scanlan's player) says "I should probably flee...but c'mon guys, I'm a triceratops!" and tries to crash through one of the barred doors on the ground floor.
5. He fails to make it all the way through the door on the first try (fucking doors man), and eats a few arrows in the process. He makes it through the door on the following turn, and drops his polymorph once he's in the room.
6. At this point, the guards (and Vedmire) are rushing down the stairs at him, and are crowded in the main chamber just outside the door. Scanlan drops a Stinking Cloud spell on the lot of them, and most of them fail the save, falling over and throwing up in the process.
7. Scanlan ducks behind a table he smashed upon entering the room, and casts Dimension Door to get up to the roof, then casts Invisibility on himself.
8. At this point, Sam is looking through his sheet and saying that he doesn't actually have anything that can make fire. Marisha (Keyleth's player) remarks that this is exactly what she was talking about, and wonders how we wound up in this situation. The DM rules that Scanlan is imagining that that's what Keyleth would say if she was there to see this shitshow as he rifles through his belongings on a rain-soaked rooftop.
9. Sam finds a potion on his sheet that was obtained forever ago--before they even started streaming their home game, IIRC: a potion of fire breathing.
10. Scanlan chugs the potion and sprints to the front of the building, and argleblargs flame onto guards who've been posted at the destroyed front door (everyone in the building is searching for him at this point).
11. The front of the building starts to catch fire because the shattered wood is mostly dry on the inside, but now everyone knows there's a flaming teleporting gnome on the roof.
12. He sprints across the roof and repeats the process on the rear door of the house.
13. A hatch he failed to spot (botched Perception check) pops open on the opposite side of the roof, and Vedmire climbs out.
14. Sam panics and flips through his spell sheets while doing some math, and realizes that his spellcasting modifier is enough to push Vedmire barely off the edge with Bigby's Hand. Vedmire rolls a 1 on the contested strength check (vs 25) and basically gets shot-put off the roof.
15. Scanlan then rushes to the open hatch and breathes his last gout of flame onto guards who are climbing the ladder upward, and sets fire to the inside of the house.
16. Running low on spell slots, Scanlan runs to the edge of the roof as a second hatch opens on the other side of the roof and two guards emerge to nail him with a few arrows.
17. Scanlan falls backwards off the roof, and moves Bigsby's Hand to catch him near the ground.
18. He escapes the manor grounds, casts Invisibility and get the fuck outta there because he is almost completely tapped out.
"You are gonna eat that? What if you get, like...bad infections?"
HAhah, I guess he'd need some penicillin! (Penicillin is made from bread mold)
I think you might have missed the point of Pike's Everlight conversation. She *thought* her friends were pulling her away from the Everlight, but they weren't. It was her own self-doubt that cut her off. The Everlight was straight up telling her "you don't have to be one specific type of person, or do one specific type of thing, to be my disciple; you can be whoever you want, and do what you want, as long as you're true to yourself."

Grog's entire takeaway from being mind controlled to kill everybody else was that he had two voices and then he stabbed a tongue. Gotta love Grog.

Grog is a half-giant barbarian, so he probably has an absurd amount of hit points and constitution.
The Everlight is the Goddess of Redemption, the Sun and most importantly in this case Honesty. Pike have to be honest with who you are and with yourself.
The Everlight believes and preaches anyone can be redeemed. As long as they are truly honest with who they are.

Trauma from being tortured turned his hair white, they didn't get to Cass before the escape attempt. I imagine those arrows in the back left her helpless for a while, there was no need to "break" her, they probably treated her kinda okay to make her part of their twisted family.

The reason Percys hair turned white is because of real thing that happens, it’s sometimes called Marie Antoinette syndrome but the scientific term is Canities Subita. It’s caused by extreme prolonged stress and both Percy and Cassandra where held captive and tortured for months. The reason Cassandra has only the streaks of white is likely because she just adapted better to the stress, you could say just as a character trait she has a stronger will than Percy.

Percy's hair whent 'shock" white due to stress and trauma. As far as i know, cassandra didnt have a streak of white hair in the streams, this is something only in the animation, it may have been a creative decision to make something similar between the siblings. but the reason may be the same, trauma.

Ok here goes. As of C1E28 "The Sun Tree" Grog had 163 max hp (shoutout critrolestats). Rage effectively doubles that for this purpose, making it 326. Assuming the archers have longbows and a +3 dex modifier, they're doing 7.5 damage per hit on average assuming they never crit. 326/7.5=43.467. So 44 unremarkable hits. If these are really elite archers with a +4 dex mod, that goes down to 39. If someone sees this and wants to put in more effort on on it, 1/20 hits does an additional 4.5 damage. If you want to figure out hit rates, his AC at the time was 19. I figure +8 or +9 to hit is about right for the archers (3 or 4 from dex, 3 from prof, 2 from fighting style).
