It was and still is predominantly hispanic folks. I believe she is just showing a part of what she had when she grew up...Hispanic friends and classmates and culture...etc.

I seen so many people give her shit for this but when I was younger and I saw this I was like Dannng she really did that I felt so proud and honored that she was incorporating our culture plus she is from Orange County she said in an interview that she was inspired by the Latina girls in her high school she had this one girl in particular in her class that she used to talk to and this was her whole style aesthetic and that gwen really loved the way she did her makeup nd her whole style that's where that scene came from when she's in the mirror separating her eyelashes with a needle cause she said in class that girl would do her make up and she did the exact same thing to her eyelashes. So yeah she got inspired by the cholas in her high school
People wylin lol Cultural appropriation and insensitivity is DEFINTELY a thing, but also is being ridiculously on the other side too (people can't seem to understand that both can exist at once and there's a spectrum lmao Idiots). She was SO respectful. Chola dress isn't even owned culturally so, like, so many people from th Hood dressed that way on the block including myself lmao. It's more regional than anything, not cultural. Plus, it ain't like she was tryna speak some gringa Spanish or cool etc, she did nothing offensive here. People coming to an old ass song that had no issues (I can sometimes, when appropriate, see treading the past if something was truly inappropriate!) to complain and whine. Go listen to something else then damn lol

This song brings sweet memories of my then boyfriend. . We are both nurses working 12 hours shift. We took our first gettaway vacation and stayed in a really nice hotel resort with Egyptian cotton sheets, and this song came on. We danced to this song. Great memories!!!
She was 35 or 36 when this was filmed, depending on what part of the year this was filmed. She is currently 46 now. Plus she was younger than 32 when no doubt had their first single. Their first single was released during the 1990s when she was in her 20s.
J Lo doesn't drink much or possibly at all and she has said in many interviews how protective she is about her sleep and tries to get to bed at 10. She really works hard and takes care of herself. Gwen also has been known to work hard at keeping her weight down because she loves fashion and likes to wear it, and also has kept a rigorous workout schedule, at least in the past.
It’s silly that some have complained about this video. She grew up in Orange County, of course she’s going to be influenced by the Hispanic culture. This brings back so many memories, I wore this look from middle school through high school. I still kinda do lol

@@zaidsoub3031 Funny you say that. She has a beautiful voice. But I hope she doesn't go into the music industry. It's wicked. She wants to be a paleontologist, so let's cross our fingers and pray she chooses education instead of fame. No matter what she does, she's good at everything. Not trying to brag, ok...yes I am. Having a child who excels at everything she does is great. But it has its drawbacks. In their quest for perfection, they can get overwhelmed and feel responsible for everything. Sometimes my daughter tries too hard to be perfect, and that's unrealistic. No one is perfect except the Almighty God.
@@zaidsoub3031 It's funny you say that. Not only is she intelligent, but also has a beautiful singing voice. I'm a proud mother who exercises her bragging rights at any given chance and moment😁💯
Sadly a lot of people disagree with you. Theres a lot of black women who have made culture appropriation videos about gwen and they make her out to be this horrible person. Gwens not perfect and if she was to offend another culture i know it would only be by accident..

Eza E wait what? I don’t see her appropriating my culture at all, she’s been the only women I see not label us as gangsters and use violent and nasty lyrics. Although I see your point this video does not have anything you just mentioned
This is why i love gwen, she has never appropriated any culture. She is so honest about where her ideas and inspiration comes from. Same with her reggaeton style, same with her harajuku style. She never pretends that she came up with these themes on her own. Appropriation only happens when a culture steals and tries to own someone else's culture. Plus its really good music.
Well, it is technically appropriation, but it's not the bad kind of appropriation. What people don't understand is that cultural appropriation is a neutral academic term. It just describes something that exists. And there are layers to it. For example, I sometimes wear a Celtic ring, even though I'm not Irish. Maybe there's some drops of Irish ancestry, but if there is, it's so far back in the family tree that it's completely irrelevant. So this is a form of appropriation. I also used to wear a Catholic rosary necklace in high school, just because I thought it was a pretty necklace - even though I'm not Catholic and didn't grow up in a Catholic household. This is a form of cultural appropriation. Just not the offensive kind. Cultural appropriation only becomes bad, or by extension racially insensitive, if a white person tries to pass off other cultures' innovations and ideas as their own without giving proper credit. In general, here is a rule of thumb: if it is a culture historically marginalized by western colonialism/imperialism appropriating any culture, then no harm, no foul. But if it is a culture appropriating a culture traditionally exploited by western colonialism/imperialism, then that's when people usually get cranky. This is why nobody would get mad at Mexico for, say, appropriating German culture.
Here in 2024. Idk how ppl could hate this girl bc she had a little hip hop in here. Talking about culture appropriation 🤣👎🏾 Fuuck all that let’s focus on the fact this girl had talent & was HOT‼️🔥

Can we talk about how HOT she looks in this particular video ? i mean she's always gorgeous but in this video there's something that just screams HOTTNESS.
I loooooooved it when pop chicks from the yesteryears like Pink, Gwen, J.Lo & Brit explored their hood/R&B side. Especially when it was accompanied by those hot ass beats by Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Storch & Pharrell. Such a unique time. 2005 last of the golden era.
Haha come on people, Gwen has always been into taking things from other cultures and incorporating them into her own look. Remember the 90's when she was dating Tony Kanal and got really into India? With the bindi and all? And when she first went solo (to now) she got really into Japan. Her borrowing styles from other cultures should be seen as a compliment, not a conflict.
Really? You aren't a person of color from what I can see. When white people take things from our cultures, they don't get discriminated for it. If I went around dressing like a chola I could get stopped or even killed because cholas are usually associated with gangs. But when Gwen does it she's seen as cool and urban. She isn't risking her life like my people have risked their lives to wear a look THEY CREATED FOR THEMSELVES. So no it isn't a compliment, it's cultural appropriation.
Gen Vel if I dress like a chola, I would get beat up too. Being white has nothing to do with that. She got away with it because she was famous and even cholas liked her when she dressed like that. Don't be a fucking moron.
+downthestreetteam hahah wow you really think rather negative stereotypes that apply to Latina cholas would apply to you? You don't get it, in our society PoC are demonized and white people are praised so yeah NOTHING would happen to you. Don't call me a fucking moron and don't tell me what I can and can't be offended by you stupid gringa.
Gen Vel You obviously must live in an area where people kiss the ground that white people walk on. In the area I live in, in California, I would not be able to walk around the streets dressing like that because people would see it exactly as what you're saying, Cultural appropriation. My only point is that she is able to do that because she is famous. That is the truth. I'm not denying that I have privilege as a white person. It's rather nice to be honest. So by you calling me a stupid gringa doesn't really affect me. Because I'm still white. And I really don't like the saying that unless it's to people like you who like to find race issues in everything on this earth. Have a nice day and find something else to complain about. I don't spend time being nice to negative people like you.
+downthestreetteam literally everywhere people kiss the ground white people walk on. And it's good that people where you're from would call you out on that because it's not your culture. You guys are really something. You think that if you take parts our cultures that we wouldn't be offended? Flattered even? No. It's something we made by ourselves for ourselves. That doesn't include white people. Even if we choose to share our cultures why would we want to share it with the same people that force us to assimilate to theirs
People are saying Gwen is mocking cultures. I'm sorry but she nailed the homegirl look. Some cholas bleach their hair to get that look and spray on the Aquanette. Leave Gwen alone. She is representing her Anaheim up bringing.

I honestly dont think this music video is anything of cultural appropriation. She was born and raised in Anaheim, I had friends who went to the same school she did and had friends living in the city. It was and still is predominantly hispanic folks. I believe she is just showing a part of what she had when she grew up...Hispanic friends and classmates and culture...etc.
admirable, such an inspiration.

As a super guera Mexican American Gwen never came off as a culture vulture, to me she was paying her respects to the people she grew up around in Southern Cali. To me she was a reflection of who I was bc I never truly felt a part of my own culture. She helped shape my view of myself and I’m forever grateful for her 💗

Exactly!
She was 35 here, looking 22 - incredible. I gotta say her and Tinashe are one of the prettiest girls I’ve seen in the music industry.
There is something so insanely sexy about this melody. It makes since why it's so many artists have used it in their songs. It's just gorgeous.
She was 36 in the video I always thought she was younger back in the day. I still forget she's in her late 40's today

If she released this song today she would be accused of cultural appropriation😧😩. I miss the days when people were able to be creative without barriers.
Gwen stefani always had fun videos with elements of other cultures and I always thought that was so cool. Sad people don't appreciate that anymore :/
I loved Gwen Stefani when she would apply other cultures in her videos so that everyone is like family to her.

Nearly 20 years on and this track still remains in my regular circulation. Still remains in my top 10 favourite songs of all time and of course my favourite Gwen Stefani song ever
I remember separating my eyelashes using a safety pin.
She's holds her own
culture appropriation wasnt a thing back then.....everyone in L. A. Dressed like this every race not just Mexicans....
I remember this interview.
Jealous cuz when I do my hair like that I look like la India Maria. Lol JK. I love Gwen Stefani ❤
I’m Chicano and I’m honored she used our culture like I don’t understand why y’all so hurt like I’d be hurt if she excluded us 💜
People wylin lol Cultural appropriation and insensitivity is DEFINTELY a thing, but also is being ridiculously on the other side too (people can't seem to understand that both can exist at once and there's a spectrum lmao Idiots).

10 years later and she still looks the same. Her and J LO don't age. They both still look amazing to be almost 50.
+EdgeofGlory261 Gwen was already 35 when this video was shot
+The 'L' wait what...
+The 'L' 35 when she shot this??/ She was 32 when no doubt had their first single!

Onyx Fire thats my point. She was honest about her influences
Onyx Fire actually there’s four harajuku girls, love angel music and baby
This is why nobody would get mad at Mexico for, say, appropriating German culture.
dude you forgot to point out the fact that the term "cultural appreciation" exists

This music video is a definition of mid-2000s
We don’t talk about her enough. She was for the culture. Black , white , Mexican, she make music for the people ❤
