love how this actually made me care somewhat for the silly little black mesa scientists, especially these guys being stuck in a death trap with hostile soldiers and aliens outside the only conceivable exit
Something curious about those scientists is that they were bombed by the military just after gordon leaves the facility, so at least they died quickly instead of suffering under combine rule..
everything in half-life 1 happens within 2 days, so thankfully those scientists didnt wait long enough to starve or dehydrate but i cannot imagine how stressed and scared they must have been
They're more likely been there for few hours max, considering that facility they're in has survivors in blocked room testing Gauss gun (it would be impossible that soldiers were clueless about them, if they were there for days) and security guard that you encounter in beginning. It seems HECU were raiding that place only recently, so they couldn't clear whole area, and didn't know about hidden remaining survivors.
When I went in this room, I tried to bring all three scientists and the barney, which follows my previous endeavors to get the most people in groups so they can fend for themselves. When I got two of the scientists to follow me (Walter and Luther), one (Luther) stopped and said he was gonna wait for his colleague. I got Walter and the security guard to the lobby. I went back for the other two only to find Luther missing and Slick, the last scientist in the room. Even more peculiar, I got Slick up to the lobby and found more HECU soldiers. Barney was missing as well, meaning only Walter and Slick were there. Maybe they despawned, because that's happened to me quite a few times. (Most notably in Surface Tension when the tentacle was supposed to have loot next to it, but there was none, and also when the HECU soldiers' guns that were dropped just the map adjacent to the tentacle disappeared.) Never seen it again, especially for NPCs.
My personal headcanon was that Luther offed himself as he didn’t want to face the military or aliens, or couldn't live with himself after word of what they've been doing got out, and Barney died after the HECU arrived, trying to defend the scientists. They're doomed as well. If they go out, there's gonna be HECU. If they stay, the whole facility is gonna blow up. If they wait then get out, Race X, the remaining HECU, and the Black Ops will be there.
This is actually pretty good man, you have a good eye for telling a story where most people would not see one, and it has pretty good cinematography i can see you become popular keep at it (:
But fourth scientist died after turning on surgery machine and trying to get through it, whole reason they're trapped is their attempt to hide from HECU soldiers by turning on said machine. 0:25 They also could've have been spotted there by grunt, so ingame they're hiding in corners of the room to remain hidden.
This video made me realize how RELIEVING it must feel for the scientists to see Gordon's bright orange HEV suit. It's literally a color signal of "you're safe". I love that. I never even NOTICED that before.

There's something so emotional about Freeman's arrival. You can feel the depression setting in from the scientists and the rush of hope as they see a man that may just be equipped well enough to save them.
I really like this concept of video, scientists being stuck in this room and trying to find a way to get out, they lost Peters who tried to turn off that sugery machine. When they thought there was not any hope left, the gorgeous and shiny orange suit guy just open the door.
