Texas Bracing For Hurricane Beryl: Landfall Expected Sunday Night

  • A cool front will move south today, bringing scattered thunderstorms to the northern half of Texas. The same is expected on Saturday. Hurricane Beryl will approach the Texas coast late Sunday with a direct threat of strong winds, dangerous storm surge, tornadoes, and heavy rain.
Hurricane Beryl made landfall this morning south of Cancun in the Yucatan Peninsula. Weakening is expected as the system moves northwest over land through this evening. We anticipate Beryl will move into the Gulf of Mexico tonight and continue moving northwest this weekend. Assuming logic plays out, Beryl will spend most of Saturday recovering from its trip over the Yucatan. How quickly the system can recover will determine its intensity at landfall late Sunday. Confidence is increasing that Beryl will directly impact the Texas coast, as the track forecast is trending north. Some data suggests Beryl may move closer to the Coastal Bend, while others continue to show a Lower Texas Gulf Coast strike.
In reality, the impacts from Beryl will be felt along most of the Texas Gulf Coast, especially during high tide when storm surge impacts will be highest. As Alberto demonstrated a couple of weeks ago, the on-shore flow will result in multiple rounds of flooding - especially during the high tides. We anticipate the same issues with Beryl, though it will likely be more severe closer to the landfall location, especially just northeast.
Unfortunately, the hurricane's forward speed is expected to slow as it approaches the Texas Coast, which will continue after landfall. Beryl is now anticipated to land as a high-end category one hurricane Sunday night, so we should prepare for a category two hurricane. Always plan for one category above the forecast, just in case. A lot will depend on Beryl’s structure once it moves into the Gulf of Mexico.
After Hurricane Beryl makes landfall on the Texas Coast late Sunday, it will slowly turn north. While the winds will weaken, we’ll continue to deal with heavy rainfall, on-shore flow, and the potential for tornadoes into Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday across South Texas, the Coastal Plains, into South-Central Texas, Central Texas, the Brazos Valley, and Southeast Texas. We’ll also see rain chances farther north since most of Texas will be in a tropical regime. Fresh-water flooding will be a threat, and we’ll narrow down that issue as we get closer to landfall and a better idea of the eventual track of Beryl’s remnants into next week.
Hurricane Watches, Storm Surge Watches, and Tropical Storm Watches will be issued for parts of the Texas Gulf Coast later this morning or afternoon. Follow the advice from local officials regarding evacuations.

More rains, less golf courses, and suburban developments. Between Lake Buchanan, and Lake Travis there is 58 golf courses. Ain’t that some 💩?
Our old house was the first one built in Bee Cave’s Falconhead suburb back in early 2000s. Our house had 5 bathrooms, and irrigation.
Ever since then. The more houses that went up, the less water Lake Travis, and Pacebend Park had. You should google how much water a golf course use each year. Then multiply it by 58. Then add up all the lawns, and houses, with irrigation, and 4-5-6 bathrooms.
You should see how many light bulbs it takes to light up these new million dollar suburban homes too. Talk about our Texas electric grid struggles. Our old house had 16 canned lights. Just in the ceiling of our living room alone.
It’s a travesty to see every hill in the Hill Country covered in houses.

@@8arrows Lawn culture is such nonsense. So many better native groundcover options, some of which don't even grow high enough to need mowing. Heck, if we could get past our obsession with grass lawns, the golf courses wouldn't be nearly as big a problem. (But holy moly, that's a lot of golf courses! o_o )

Yep, we're in our 3rd year of this drought!
I live in a little lake town on the North side of Lake Travis, and honestly,
I haven't even SEEN the lake up here for 2 years.
      It's gone.
      It's just all dried up!
But I know it will be back.
Is THIS the year it comes back??
      MAYBE SO!!!
Even tho we definitely don't want anyone on the coast to suffer any hardship from this weather event,
I can't help but get excited to have the heavens open up and just gift us with as much water as possible!!!
And I'm not going to apologize for being happy about RAIN!!!
      Travis is only ⅓ full.
Which means we can take ANY amount of flash flooding, (we're used to it!)
and probably STILL need MORE to fill the lake!
(There's SO MANY people living here now (looking at you Austin 👀❗️)
that the amount of water being used out of Travis is just astounding.)
It's going to take more than one hurricane to bring us back up to anything close to "normal" lake levels!
I know we're not the only ones who have been SO DRY!
      Flash Floods, or Drought Conditions-
It's just the norm for all of us here in Central Texas.
Just about everyone over here in
The Hill Country, North to South, and East to West, has been suffering the lack of rain.
      So yeah-
Bring It On Home Beryl !!! 💦
      👍🌧🌧🌧🌧🌧🌧🌧🌧🌧👍

The 3 MAJOR FACTORS of s hurricane over open water ; BAROMETRIC PRESSURE - WATER TEMPERATURE - SPEED OF MOVEMENT . All have to do with how big a storm can / will get ...

I've been in several bad hurricanes growing up in S FL and then here Honestly I would rather go through another Hurricane Andrew in Miami than a hurricane Ike in Houston. They can't handle hurricanes here. They could barely handle a tropical storm. Heck one time we had a flooded freeway from a water main burst when there wasn't a cloud in the sky. And Harvey wasn't even a direct here and some folks are still recovering from flood damage. Thank goodness for this channel! And a local weather forum I have followed for about 10 years now. Broadcast news is useless. I miss Dr. Neil Frank.
Thank you for all your work here!! Wishing you safe travels back to Texas.

It rained in Dallas Texas earlier today. But the rain seemed like it was coming down with lots of splashes
It was very white and kind of foggy outside. Wondering if it has something to do with cloud seeding. 🤷 . It just seems unnormal.

Just not directly on the beach. Keeping an eye on your forecasts since we love just south of Houston towards the coast.

David, praying for good weather coming back to DFW. COME HOME. REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THURS. FORCAST. WE DO NOT NEED RAIN IN DFW OR EAST, TX. YES, PRAYING FOR SOUTH AND COAST. IN THE 50'S WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, WE LIVED ON TAMPA. FL. FOR 6 YRS. OFF BASE ON TAMPA BAY, THERE WAS NEVER A HURRICANE. WHAT IS HARD TO BELIEVE, IS HOW FL. IS STILL😮 ATTACHED TO US. UNBELIEVABLE IN POPULATION. 1 HIGHWAY TOP TO BOTTOM. NO. I LIKE NE AND 30 EAST TX. NOT GOING ANYWHERE. IF YOU LIVE AT SEA LEVEL, WELL, THEN, YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT CAN HAPPEN. FREE WILL. YOU REALLY HAVE TO THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU SHOULD LIVE, NOT AT SEA LEVEL. LOVE BEACHES. HAVE BERN TO GALVESTION 1X. STILL, EXPERIENCE SHOULD GIVE YOU WISDOM. TX DOES NOT HAVE FLOOD INSURANCE. SO, PRAYING IT ALL JUST DISAPATES. GOD CAN DO ANYTHING.
    BLESSINGS 😊

@texasweathercenter how long lasting are the effects of the hurricane? I am supposed to go to Rockport on vacation beginning Tuesday. I understand the hurricane will make landfall Sunday night into Monday, but will the rain, flooding, dangerous swimming conditions, etc. persist for the rest of the week or only perhaps through Tuesday and Wednesday? I am unfamiliar with hurricanes and I’m trying to decide if I need to cancel my trip if the whole week will be a washout or we will be unlikely able to swim safely. Appreciate your reply so much. Not sure where to go for answers.

Does hurricane Sandy and hurricane Beryl share similar characteristics? Sandy slammed the eastern United States as a combination hurricane/nor'easter/winter storm.
Beryl will strike Texas (somewhere) as storms are coming from the north….just wondering🤔
