  • Welcome to Retro Ralph's arcade channel, where we take a look at the classic games that made the arcade scene so special. In this video, we dive into the history and gameplay of one of the rarest and most beloved arcade games of all time: Sinistar.
Sinistar was a game developed by Williams Electronics in 1982, and it quickly became a classic due to its unique gameplay and challenging mechanics. However, what makes Sinistar even more special is the cockpit variant of the game, which is extremely rare and almost impossible to find today. The cockpit version of Sinistar provided an immersive experience for players, with a fully enclosed cockpit cabinet that featured amazing sound effects for its time!
Despite being incredibly rare, the cockpit version of Sinistar wasn't a hit in the arcades, but it remains one of the most sought-after arcade cabinets today. There are very few of them left in the wild, making them a true gem for collectors and fans of classic arcade games.
In this video, Retro Ralph takes you through the history of Sinistar, explains the gameplay mechanics, and why it was so important to the arcade scene. He also shares his personal experience with the cockpit variant of Sinistar, explaining why it's his favorite arcade game of all time.
So, if you're a fan of classic arcade games or just love learning about the history of gaming, then this is the video for you. Sit back, relax, and join Retro Ralph on this journey through one of the rarest and most iconic arcade games ever made - Sinistar.

I don't have Sinistar. But back in the 80's you always knew when an arcade had one because of the machine yelling in attract mode. In fact at one point I was lookong for recordings of arcade background noise to play in my little basement arcade for ambiance. And the biggest thing I wanted was Sinistar yelling in the background as part of the sounds.

I dug around on RUclips and found recordings of arcades. Most of which are just the sounds of the machines running. I just wanted some background noise that made me feel like I was in an arcade from my childhood. And Sinistar was one of the attracts I always remember from back then.

I remember how awesome for the first time walking into a arcade in the mall in 1982 it was called two bit operation and you could hear the arcade from a distance and knew what arcades they had by the sounds before you got there, 80s music playing in the background almost pitch black all you could see was the glowing arcade monitors and glowing space carpet and images on the walls above. Tron had a glow to it that was just awesome to look at and the people made it way to crowded as you couldn't even play a game that you wanted as to many lined up for the next play. Incredible experience living through the 80s and there will never be anything like it again.

@@RetroRalph Sinistar is one I never encountered in the wild, so I don’t think I’ve played it. With the 49-way stick, it’s one that takes more effort to emulate on a cab, so keeping the real stuff alive is great. It wouldn’t feel authentic trying with an 8-way…. Keep it up!

I did grow up with it and the feeling of hearing it first, then seeing it! I have to admit I was pretty shy about playing it at first until i watched a couple of other people play it. The speech sounds coming out of the arcades around that time were amazing. Combine this with berzerk's sounds was definitely attracting. The cockpit at that age? Forget it lol. It was like Event Horizon to a kid that young back in the 80's. Super awesome game. It's one of .y top shelf games I still play to this day. Im glad someone like you were able to acquire the cockpit version. I know you will treat it well. Definitely a diamond I the rough! I had a William's collection where one of the code programmers (cant remember his name) was talking about how the kids found out about an infinite lives cheat! Thanks for the great videos Ralph. Very envious of your cockpit! Was lucky enough to have a local arcade with one that I set a record of 276,000 on some years ago. Since then, it broke down and it's been a struggle not having a game to play. I've tried emulation with an analog arcade stick, but nothing feels like that original 49-way joystick. I reached a point where I memorized all 24 directional positions and was able to effortlessly flick to take out anything tailing me. Incredible game that I wish were more common.

It's great that you not only own the cockpit (AND cabinet), but you enjoy the game as well! It makes it that much more special. I love the look of the Sinistar cockpit... actually for many cockpit games the look and play take it to a whole different level than the standard cabinet version. For example, Atari Star Wars also came out in 1983 with the stand up and the cockpit. Only about 2,400 were made... more than the 200 Sinistar, but still numbers like that make the old cockpits hard to find. But being "inside" the game with a more enclosed sound system makes it feel more immersive and to me more enjoyable! I ended up building my own Star Wars Arcade cockpit from scratch thanks to build plans and templates out there. Still quite a feat and was a 2 month project to build. Everything outside and most of the inside is built to original specs, but I took liberty on the control panel and screen because finding the original components to put inside the game, including working boards (or even worse, an Amplifone vector monitor), is very hard and can be expensive! So, I had to put in a pc and make it emulated with the GRS Flight Yoke. I'm enjoying it very much... and unlike the original 1983 version, I get to play other arcade games inside a cockpit that should have had a version made for them. So it's not an original, but it's a +1 to the number of Star Wars cockpits remaining in the world to me!

i had this combo back in 2009, i got a standup, then found a cockpit not even 3 months later. paid 400 for the standup and 900 for the cockpit. artwork and condition on cockpit was very good, however seat was cracked (fixed it with fiberglass repair kit and spray foam to fill the seat, and the control panel was cracked on bottom right corner, and bolts were missing from it. If you ever see a sinistar cockpit with bigger than normal bolt heads on the control panel that's the one i had. but i'd say the absolute coolest looking cockpit out of them all. one thing i did not like was the game was not comfortable to play in the cockpit that 49 way joystick, had some good resistance and the angle it was at would hurt your wrist after a bit. still worth owning but it was mad uncomfortable. so if your a collector i'd say that's the best reason to have them both, the standup looks great as well, but its the one that is super comfy to play, the cockpit keep just for the looks. nice find.

Looking at this, I kinda wonder if MAME can do motion control...I could imagine the 'ultimate' MAME setup, with a cabinet based on the deluxe cockpits for Afterburner/G-Loc (or if you're really ambitious/insane, the R-360 cab), then using it for the flight sims, racing games, regular games, etc.

I play Sinistar in one of my 4 MAME cabinets. This game plays in my vertical MAME cab. I built it in a MsPacman cabinet (wood grain side art, no cabinet art) with a 19" CRT arcade monitor. I'm able to change my control panels for almost every possible combination you can imagine. Sinistar plays using my analog joystick. I use the Ultimarc Ultimate 360 red ball top joystick. Works great for this game, and feels pretty good. I like to use the original controls when possible, but the original joysticks used in this game are hard to obtain. Sinistar plays & feels pretty good with the Ultimarc joystick, and even old versions of MAME were very capable of replicating the game PCB.

The Sinistar cockpit is scarce but it's not as rare as the Blaster cockpit (only three made). According to Eugene Jarvis the disposition of them are:
    1. Converted into a prototype game (Devastator)
    2. One is at his dad's house
    3. ???????
