Fantastic game and battle report! Very helpful narration/explanation of each force's tactics, what's happening during activations, what dice rolls mean and other relevant game rules. Also appreciate the references to scenes from the movie Black Hawk Down as they apply to the game. Bravo, looking forward to Part 2!
These FoF batreps of yours are so well edited! Thoroughly enjoy watching them. (Ive rewatched both😂) WE WANT MORE! FoF is maybe my favorite system and it is criminally underrepresented on youtube. THANK YOU for putting these out!
Wow, thanks so much. And thanks for the comment on the editing in particular. It's definitely a huge slice of work with these videos that is less than fun. Lots of time building the table and minis, but at least that's fun hobby! :D I agree Force on Force doesn't get enough love. We'll be getting more FoF content up as soon as we can.
Thanks very much! Yeah, it was two hours to set up, 90 minute sto take down, all for a four-hour game. In all, including driving time, a nine-hour day.
Great job explaining and demonstrating. Nice use of movie clips. Also, I also use, 1/72, 1//76, 1/82, 1/100, and 1/144 scale for ultra modern table top and Sci Fi . Will be subscribing to your channel. Also a veteran. ( USAF).
Great game so far guys and i think the table looks great. Oriskany, Australia had boots on the ground for all 3 actions. The American action was more interesting as the boots that was inserted with the Americans were officially not there. But they are our insurgent asymmetrical specialists. Aussie's have a great ability of easily making friends. If the militia set up an ambush for hitting us the locals would come up and "Aussie no that way today.".We had a lot of respect for the locals. If they were caught telling Us it would be a grizzly death for them. How do you find FoF are there any sour notes? It seems to play fairly fast. The die rolling system is very different but i remember reading somewhere it got an award for it somewhere.
Thanks very much James! Yep, per the UNITAF page on the UN Peacekeeping website: "In addition to the United States forces, UNITAF included military units from Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Kuwait, Morocco, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe." Now that's UNOSOM I and II. Not sure about Restore Hope, but Restore Hope more or less bridged the gap between UNOSOM I and II, so there is definitely some overlap. In the video I mentioned the nations that (according to my sources) suffered fatalities, particularly in UNOSOM II. Gothic Serpent was all American (in fact even not all Americans in Somalia at the time were in Gothic Serpent; e.g. 10th Mountain Division that was hooked into UNOSOM II). The Americans were a little fed up with how the UNOSOM Legal Office dicked us over in the wake of the Bloody Monday incident. I think my favorite are the German paratroopers. Fallschirmjaeger in Somalia ... add that to the list of sentences I never thought I would say out loud. :D The only issues I have with FoF is that it is tough to balance, especially for these asymmetrical engagements. I'm not terribly experienced in running the game, so I don't have the "feel" to balance yet like I do with systems like Panzer Leader and Valor & Victory. Two: The reaction system sometimes gets a little snarled. Ranger Fireteam goes to move. Somali unit goes to react. Another Ranger team nearby goes react via overwatch. But because that second Ranger team is 12" away, it draws in Ambush fire from another Somali gang in HIDDEN positions. I'd say about once a game you almost need to draw a quick flow chart to map out all the reactions, overwatches, and ambush actions and work you way BACK to the original action. This gets especially difficult if the "logic string" starts to "Branch" because some units made these rolls and some fail. Maybe this happens ONCE every one or two games. It's moderately annoying, but on the table it's a great "cinematic" moment. You can almost picture a slow mo movie shot with muzzles swinging and fingers tensing of triggers while the music builds. WHO SHOOTS FIRST? Everything happens within a heartbeat, but not QUITE at once.
Smokin' khat, it's a narcotic common in that part of the world and ... OOOOOH ... I think I know what you might have heard. :D :D :D Badass screen name and icon. I loved Godzilla Minus One, but still have a huge soft spot for those old 60s Godzilla movies.
@@JamesJohnson-wq6bs lol 100% agreed on Godzilla movies. All of them. They were a huge part of my childhood. Well, should be evident by the screen name and icon. lol
What brand of HMMWV did you use? Been trying to source a 1:72 accurate to operation gothic serpent but struggling - videos are great by the way, big fan of this scenario and your builds! (Came here after watching your little bird AH-6 build
I really wish I remember. It was a very small distributor in Tampa with resin 3D prints. I think it was a guy working off his dining room table / garage. They're definitely good, but the readio antennae are extremely fragile. I think I've fixed them something like 10 times. But other than that they're great little models. Again, an individual vendor, 3D prints, Tampa, Florida.
That (leaderless) RPG test to fire on the Humvee as it casually drove past, should it have been an opposed test as the Marines were only moving? Wouldn't the insurgent only have to pass a TQ test to fire? Thanks
If I understand the rule right (1st edition), yes. The leaderless RPG would have to make both rolls because this is a REACTION to the Rangers moving up with the HMMWV. SO Mark succeeded in activating (at all - because militia insurgents with no leader), then we have to see whether he fires BEFORE the HMMWV completes its move. So it did activate (die roll not on camera) - but lost the reaction roll. Therefore, the RPG and AKM fires AFTER the HMMWV does its move, so instead it fires on the Eversmann's squad and luckily for my Americans did no damage.

How come you didn’t do morale checks after each and every fire that caused a casualty?
I think we did. Not every second of the game wound up on camera.
Hey Jim, I sent you a message on Discord a few days ago.
That's right, you did. Sorry, it's been busy. I will reply now.
