  • Miniaturist Journal 93. Today I'm showing you the basic steps of how I usually do faux marbling for floors, countertops and fireplaces. You could stop after the first layers of background scumble, veining scumble and overglaze, but I like to work in many layers and keep adding more detail to the layers until I am satified with the look. Play and experiment with colours, paint and glazes until you get the look you're after. You can always paint over it when you're not satisfied.
    Miniaturist Journal is a record of my activities, experiences, thoughts and observations in vlog form, all relating to miniatures.

    Loved watching you create the marble floor. Would also like to see you finish the project - cutting, varnish, grouting, etc.!

    I would so be dragging my sleeve through the wet paint. You amaze me.

      Haha, thank you. It was not the best thing to wear, the sleeves are wide and the wool fluff got into the paint. But it was too chilly to take it off. 😃

    Wow, this was absolutely fascinating! Thank you so much for putting this together! It has always seemed like such an impossible project, but you made it very understandable. And I like the Way you say that it is a process. I am far too intimidated by the thought of having to do it all in one shot.

      My pleasure Jen. Yes, just go slowly, and work on one area at a time. And remember, if you don't like it you can always wipe it away or work on it some more once the paint has dried. As I said in the video, I make more than what I need, so I can pick out parts that I like. Have fun! 😃

    Do you know what i love a most about the minature world? Its such a world of helpful and joyful people. If I made mistake at work, I worried. When I make mistakes in the minature world, its exciting to learn what I can improve. And people like Josje happily share there knowledge and wisdom 😊 its like returning to the awe and wonder of childhood and play. Or the wonder of watching your child grow and wonder.

    Thank you for another fabulous tip and a geology lesson too. Your vlogs are always so interesting. I’m off feather hunting, we have big plump wood pigeons nesting in our lime tree so I’ll begin there! 😊

      My pleasure Wendy! I hope you've found some feathers. I have so many birds in my garden (including my chickens) but no feathers this week. 😃

    Hi Josje, I did not know what was considered scrumble glaze so that set me off on an explore of UTube sites. Love to learn about different things. I can see how the layering adds depth. I think I would cut a window of cardboard so I can pick and choose the areas of “marble” to cut out. Thank you again for taking time to make these very helpful videos. I do appreciate it. Regards J

      My pleasure Janine. Glad it was helpful. I am like you, I love to explore and learn different things. And some days I'm just looking for a photo or a word and I stumble across a myriad of unrelated but very interesting topics. I love that, even though I get sidetracked. Yes on the cardboard window! I do that too and I mentioned it initially, but I cut it out along with some other parts of the original video as it was an hour long.

    Danish Wikipedia says that "Fra 1753 blev der udvundet marmor i Lier ved Drammen, som blandt andet leverede sten til Marmorkirken i København."
    That is marble was broken/extracted from Lier at Drammen in Norway from 1753. And marblestones were delivered to "The Marble Church" Marmorkirken in copenhagen. I know that granite was exported from Norway to Holland even earlier than that, so it would not be strange if marble came to Holland from Norway too.

      @MakeMiniatures  5 месяцев назад +1

      That's very interesting! So it could have come from Norway. And granite as well. Thank you so much for the info! 😃

    Dank je wel Josje, that was very helpful, especially understanding how marble is actually formed which gives a clue on how the veins run. I love the unpredictability of using feathers, of which there is no shortage here where I live. Of course there are many techniques on how to do faux marble but I like how you put layer upon layer until you are happy with the result.👏 Does the surface chip when you cut the sheet into tiles?

    • @MakeMiniatures
      @MakeMiniatures  5 месяцев назад +1

      Graag gedaan Coby. I think the best thing is to look at examples of different variations in marble (colour and pattern), they all look different. The feathers are great, especially if you get one that is a bit pointy and firmer than the one I used. I have never had a problem with the surface chipping when I cut it. Even though I work in layers, the layers are quite thin. I use a sharp scalpel to cut them. 😃
