the keyboard player isnt a comedian he is used as comedic effect guy, so he is hunted over the stage or is swimming trough the cloud, in an interview he said he wasnt even the biggest fan of doing it but as a keyboard player there are just parts where he has nothing to do also its much easier to do it for him as for the bassist or guitar player as they had to remove their instruments first and he is free to run over the stage ;)

That's also the reason for him to walk on a treadmill every now and then. Mostly he either has got nothing to do or stuff he carries single-handedly. Plus it's less draining than standing still. And in the end it gives the first line for every single person reacting to Du Hast live from Paris XD

This is a newer development. In May 2020 i saw a broadcast on arte channel (public french/german culture station) named "Durch die Nacht mit Flake Lorenz und Joey Kelly".
Both made music for a long time - Joey Kelly (and the Kelly Family) in West Germany an whole Europe and Flake in the communistic eastern part of Germany.
During this video Flake told a lot of funny stories about his time as keyboarder in Rammstein and his wish to become a comedian in Germany. He also gifted Joey with his own golden record from Rammstein and Joey gave him also one of his golden records, so it was an exchange ;-)

    • @tosa2522
      @tosa2522 4 года назад +24

There are several information about the weight of the wings. So far I have heard of 40 to 70 kg. This may have something to do with the fact, that Till does not carry the wings on his back after an accident, but that the wings have been extended by a platform on which he stands and hovers 5 meters above the stage.

I have seen this concert in person, and been a few of their different concerts, the whistle is real. That building got so hot with all the pyrotechnics going off. Have to see them in life to really see how crazy it feels in person, not the same in a long shot through a screen.

  • @wkoppelaar

  • @lazyhominid

The whistling is backing track. They have been seen not at the mike a few times, while the whistling has continued. Back in the late 90's that may not have been the case, it sounded different then, and was sometimes a bit off or in strange places of the song. They use backing tracks to support their act in several ways, like to offload Till from singing when he's very busy with the pyrotechnics, and to save his voice in some of the heavier parts. There are a lot of sequenced keyboard tracks as well, there are just too many layers to do it all live. I feel that none of this takes away from their performance. If anything, their being able to pull this kind of stuff off at all is astonishing enough.

The wings are about 50 kg and in the last years he is wearing different ones where he is standing on a podium and raises into the sky so he does not have to wight on his back. Some years ago there was an accident where Till injured himself because he fell down with the wings on.

    Flame thrower wings bro.
    Your face: 😮
Christian Lorentz (nickname Flake) is the Keyboard player. He isn't a comedienne but he is usually the butt of all the onstage jokes and mock abuse. He's like the band Jester/stuntman.
Flame throwers are pretty ordinary stage props for these guys and usually feature in several songs in a single performance, in different forms.
Check out some of the performances of the song Mein Teil to see Flake getting cooked in a giant pot by Til using a flamethrower. Flake plays keyboard inside the pot while this is happening.

You're right those wings aren't light, weighed approx 7-8 st / 110-112 lbs. In some other live versions, he was being lifted off from the ground to create the illusion of angel flying, but he wasn't really 'flying' more to just being lifted up in the air.

My twenties was full of Rammstein. They are a full package act instead of just vocal, just lyric content, visual performance etc. Their topics of choice is often very unique and in their own dark, humourous eyes, wordplay, visual so they really stand out in the music scene. Even the band was suprised by how many hard-core international fans they have even though they almost exclusively sing in German. So once you experience it all one by one you become a fan :)

About visuals. I think that Till has control over the flamethrowers on wings. And every other thing he handles during the shows. It gives him freedom to move and act and is also safety thing. You don't want anyone else controlling dangerous things you handle.
Guitarists also always have mic stands that either fall over or can otherwise easily be put out of the way when the don't need them.

    • @piiajaakkola1160
      @piiajaakkola1160 4 года назад

He has the flamethrower controller on the metal glove he's wearing. You can see it on some live videos as he walks onstage. The mic stands are made so they can lift them up with a foot and when eeleased the fall down. Till's is a bit different than Landers' and Kruspe's.

That look when the flame throwers on the wing tips fire up, just amazing. And yes, there were incidents, they burnt quite a few feathers on the wings already, and yes, they ARE as heavy as they look, about 50kg, but they need to be sturdy. Can't have lightweight flappy wings on your back, when you want to build flame throwers on them.

I shouldn't have watched this. I've been dying to catch Rammstein live since I was 14(2004). This year was my chance. I finally got beautiful tickets to the Chicago show, plane tickets and booked a 5 star hotel room because why not. Then you know what happened. 😭
I had to miss all of this:
    Highly Suspect
    Opeth
Alter Bridge (with VIP meet & greet)
    Chris Stapleton with Willie Nelson
    Megadeth and Lamb of God
    Deftones and Gojira
    Rammstein
Louder than Life festival with Metallica
I know we all lost shows so I'm not alone. But a year without live music is an absolute tragedy. Music is my religion. Concert venues are my church. But if I could never see another rock show again I'd die happy after being able to see most of my favorites. I even ended 2019 with 2 TOOL shows and a Slipknot show.
Don't let 2020 be the year that live music died 😭🤘🏻

It starts out slow and builds into an amazing climax. It also showcases Till's actual singing voice not just his low growl or spoken word singing. BTW. I think it's been mentioned already but the whistling is not live. They are miming the whistles.

The whistling is Richard and Paul, the 2 guitarists at the front of the stage. Me, my boyfriend and our best friend saw them in 2019 at Milton Keynes, they did the slow piano version and it was just mesmerising 😍 one of the best moments of my life and my first ever concert!!

Several of the band members are formally trained pyrotechnicians - which they had to become for some of their more advanced pyrotechnics to be allowed.

Gott in Himmel!!!! What a production!!! These guys really understand stage craft! The music may not be my pint of beer, but I certainly appreciate the work and skill that is put in to a performance. Their tech people must be LEGENDS!
Would you mind if I asked for something outside of your wheelhouse? Would you have a listen to Tenille Townes' The Most Beautiful Things, and Brad Paisley's No I In Beer? Canadian content; Tenille's song is just a jaw dropping simple love song, she is a new artist who already has some very good tunes to her name. Brad Paisley's beer song is a lot of fun, and we need that right now.
Nope, not metal. But hey, variety is the spice of life!
And you might look at the song that made me love country; Martina Mcbride's Safe In The Arms Of Love. Small woman, HUGE voice.
    Have fun!

Awesome!!! Was expecting this, really glad you enjoyed it even if it isn´t really your thing. I cannot stress enough how much I like to hear your commentary on the sound and instrument techniques in your reactions, spot on, entertaining and educational.
One of their biggest earlier hits. The song is simple but at the same time has so many interesting and original bits: the whistle, the slow heavy riff, the techno breakdown, and of course the performance tops the whole thing. Do some more of their hits to ease you in. The Paris versions of "Sonne", "Links 2,3,4" and "Du Hast" are great and "Ich Tu Dir Weh" in Madison Square Garden is amazing. All solid heavy riff-driven bangers. If you want a real spectacle (the sound is not as great) try "Mein Teil" live, it´s worth it. Keep up the great reactions.

about the microphone stands: the left guitarrist from audience POV (Paul Landers) can let his mic stand fall over and back again using a spring to catch it and a pedal to stand it back up. On the right side Richard Kruspe has an electronic pedal to raise or lower his mic so they can hide it

  • @citikas

I was at their concert where they blew the flamethrowers practically over the audience at the front. And then the next song hosed the same audience with water. This was Mutter tour back in 2001 when their show had less complex pyrotechnics, but is still one of the best shows I've ever been to.
I was not close enough to get that experience, but it got quite hot even further away. Their shows area HOT 🔥 in more than one sense of the word.

As both of your videos of Rammstein so far have looked at older songs, I would be so fascinated to see your reaction to a newer song. Their song Deutschland off of their newest album for instance is not only such a different sound from their earlier work (though still recognizably Rammstein), it’s also one of the most high production value music videos I’ve ever seen. Powerful message too.
At any rate, thanks for giving them a shot and sharing your reactions. I know they’re not totally your thing, but your reactions have been fun to see anyway.

"This is your money worth show" - YES. Had the luck to get a ticket to their stadium tour in 2019 with the latest album released and it was just killing it.
If you want imo the heaviest fire show, do "Mein Teil" from Rammstein... its simply sick and one the most played live performances by them i would say.
Keep up the good work, really like it

There's 2 songs of them i really think you should watch:
Mein Teil (live at Hurricane Festival) - this is one of their most iconic showpieces, really a must watch if not only for the show they bring with this song. It's also based on a pretty interesting event.
Mutter (live at Paris, or perhaps the official video if it doesn't get blocked) - this is one of their more emotional/genuine songs, and the way he sings in this song feels almost exactly as how you described his more young, innocent vocals.

The weight of the wings is 50 kg (100 Pound). As Till has also a certificate in pyrotechnic he controls the fire with his metal glove. They have changed the show a little bit: Now Till lifted down from the rove, hanging on steel ropes.

Lindemann looks surely like a dude you don´t want to p**s off. I give you that. And I guess, he doesn´t just look strong. His body is toughened by competitive sports. As a teenager he was a swimming athlete, he was considered to go to the Olympics in Moscow 1980. But because he had left the teamhotel during Youth European Championships in Florence/Italy (where he was seventh over 1500 m) and contacted westgerman athletes (which was not allowed then), his participation was refused by his government. He then made an education as carpenter. I met him in Berlin back in the early nineties and there he seemed to be a friendly decent strong looking guy. Good reaction. Greetings from Germany.

Sonne is the best (and my very favourite) of their earlier stuff, definitely well worth a go. But Deutschland is their undisputable masterpiece, absolute compulsory experience. Or for a pure live fix, Feuer Frei is worth a go too, if only for the fact that the guitarists have flamethrowers mounted on their FACES.

Add my vote for 'Mutter' in Paris. Melodic.
I read that Paul commented in an interview how psyched he was when he could move around freely, as you noticed when he knocked his mic stand over, because their pyro show was stage blocked so carefully for safety.

I think the whistling is coming from the keyboard or a sample but they might be sort of trying to whistle along.
By the way the tldr of the lyrics is:
The singer doesn't want to be an angel because they have to cling to stars and are all alone and afraid in the night sky.
The start of the refrain literally translates to "[choir] When the clouds go to sleep you can see us in the sky. We are afraid and all alone. [lead singer] God knows I don't want to be an angel."

Context: this song was featured at the end of the film "Rammstein in Amerika", which you can find on Amazon Prime. The film follows the doings of the band from the middle of the 90s to 2010 and features a lot of interviews with the members and various American Musicians. It explains quite a few things about background and the sometimes awkward "affair" of the band with America, including being permanently banned from using pyro in Chicago and being arrested for performing their usual skit playing "Bück Dich".
One of the American musicians hilariously recounted the time when he was offered to play a song with the band and was positioned at a particular spot on the stage. He remembered being frightened stiff of the heavy pyro artillery around, staying glued to that particular spot the whole time trying not get incinerated.

I believe the keyboard player Flake's wife was the one who did the whistling that was recorded. In regards to the mic falling, Paul Landers likes to bounce his mic up and down. I've seen a gif of him (accidentally?) bonking himself in the forehead with it.
I recommend "Mein Teil" or "Ich Tuh de Weh" from Rammstein. Great songs, great performances. Or maybe "Heirate Mich".

A nice analysis, you bring knowledge to the table which really sets you apart from most other reaction channels. This is one of those songs even Non-Rammstein fans are aware of, I believe Till's daughter was the voice of the choir. If you are interested in more subdued, ballad-like Rammstein songs I can recommend 'Mann gegen Mann' (Paris), 'Ohne dich' and 'Rosenrot', although I haven't seen live-performances of the later two.

There are other liver performances of this where the wings come down and he steps back onto a foot hold and straps them on, then he's lifted off the stage wearing them. I think that's how it was originally intended by there are some venues where they couldn't do that so they adapted the wings so he could just come out wearing them instead. That's what I've heard anyway, and it seems to make sense given the other live performances.

Love the bloopers on Engel performances they've done, especially with Paul Landers (Guitarist on the left (or right, seen from the audience's perspective)). Come to think of it because of some of Chase's comments in the video:
7:40 "... who blasted two flamethrowers above those guitarists." - At one point Paul forgets about the other pyros coming out of the floor behind them, almost get burnt when he's dancing around, and could just as well have been hit by Till's wings instead.
11:06 "Wait... did his mic just break?" - No, it didn't break, but for some reason they have these stands that can be easily tilted down, and then they step on the bottom part to bring them back up to height again. Not sure if it's from this performance specifically, but at one of them Paul has serious problems getting it back up again. In another he stomps it too hard, and it actually comes up so fast it hits him right in the face.
