  • Arcane had a magnificent season 1. It always seems like adaptations are horribly executed so what did arcane do right? I was blown away by the overall quality of the show after going in with really low expectations.

    Silco is such a great character. I think one thing that's hard to catch is that, when he got the offer from Jayce, he *immediately* knew he'd never take it. But he didn't know *why*. After all, he'd lived his life as the person who'd do anything, sacrifice anything, and then Jayce makes him choose between what he thought he wanted and what he didn't know he could never lose. The rest of his arc isn't him deciding what he should do, it's coming to terms with what he decided when he heard the offer - that he never would have given her to them.

    Something I really like about Silco:
    Many writers these days try to make villains the reader/viewer can empathise with. They make their villainy the result of trauma, mistakes made with good intentions, or attempt to justify their evils.
    Silco was none of that. He was evil. He knew he was evil. The writers didn't try to justify his use of Shimmer, his kidnapping of Powder, his bribing of the enforcers, or any other evil act he did.
    Sure, he had a noble goal; independence for the undercity. But the writers never tried to make his character attempt to justify his evil acts in that light.
    He deliberately chose to do evil things. He was absolutely a villain. And he's relatable.
    That is a masterpiece of writing.

    I never really felt like there was a clear villain in Arcane, everyone felt like actual people, Silco while manipulative, did truly care for Jinx and did love her, Vi does love Jinx but despite this, couldnt accept who she had become, Jinx felt betrayed by everyone except for Silco so she pushed everyone else away when they couldnt accept her for who she had become, the trauma she faced changed her a lot. It is truly a masterpiece of story telling and in my opinion one of if not the best animated show ever made

    There's something I'd like to point out that I thought was neat.
    Silco's a visionary, Vander's a fighter. Silco's injury is on his eye and Vander's on his wrist.
    In this last moments, one where his eyes are starting to glaze over, thus making it hard for him to see/focus on Jinx. That's what he finally understood how Vander felt, back when Vander could chose to kill him or to protect Vi.
    As for Vander, he's been fighting until his final breath, when he found out Vi was alive he fought to buy her some time to get out of the rubble, he fought through the pain to stay alive to take a vial of shimmer. He fought for control when he nearly lost it when he was killing Deckared and snapped out of it when he saw Vi's fearful look ("That fear in your eyes.. I've seen it before") And of course he fought the urge for revenge to save his daughter.
    At least those are just my interpretation of it
    Also the cat on mouse scene at the end of episode one was eluding that the weak will rise against the strong
    or in this case Undercity slowly rising against Topside

      Interesting theory. Honestly this show incorporates so much symbolism I wouldn't be surprised if the writers made that character design choice fully intentionally. What's great about this show is that you don't need to pick out all the foreshadowing, parallels and others symbolisms to enjoy a well-told tale with deep characters, but picking up on these small details adds just that much more to the experience.

  • @vanteal
    @vanteal 2 года назад +654

    Arcane is great because 1. It's written by people who actually "KNOW" the material, have a passion for it and can see the future of these stories and characters. It wasn't created by someone just doing it for a paycheck from Hollywood... 2. It's NOT live-action and is instead a somewhat new and unique medium that has rarely been seen, especially in the mainstream. 3. It's a completely unique story. Yes, it ties into the lore, but in its own and unique way. We have no expectations, therefore, we can't judge....4. There's an actual story being told. It's not trying to force itself to subvert itself to every single audience member. It doesn't force any campy comedy, it doesn't force any "Girl Power" tropes, it doesn't have anything force-fed to us in any way to "make everyone happy". Which is something every single big blockbuster movie does these days.................... With all that said. The ONLY other time an adaptation was done so perfectly was the 1991 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film... That was the best adaptation ever and nothing has come close to that level of adaptation perfection.

    I also just love all the tiny details they put into their characters, even the minor characters like Jayce's mom. There's one hugely subtle detail about Viktor's story also that I missed out on during my first time watching, but now I can't help but see each time I watch. I originally didn't even start considering Viktor a "main" character until late in the season (Ep5 or 6 probably? But I also went in not knowing Viktor was a playable LoL character) He appears as early as Ep2, and he's in 3 and 4, but if he never showed up again after that, I wouldn't have really thought anything of it, and Viktor would have just been "that assistant guy". And then upon rewatching Arcane, and coming to realize just how integral being an introvert is to Viktor's character, I realized that he was being introduced to us from his very first appearance, being barely even seen or heard, but being there all the same. Viktor was already being endeared to me without me even fully being aware of it. His lifelong struggles of feeling voiceless and alone are all being shown to us before we even realize he's an important character. The only person Viktor has any extended dialogue with is Jayce, and even during the few times he does speak with another character, it is always with Jayce there with him, and Jayce is really doing most of the talking, or at least saying most of the things that are driving the plot, Viktor's viewpoint rarely being the path that gets chosen. It also makes Viktor and Sky's arc even more tragic, two introverts who struggled with loneliness their entire lives. They both desired people to care for them, and they cared for each other, working side by side for who knows how many years, but Viktor only coming to realize after Sky's death that this whole time he had felt so alone, he hadn't actually been alone, only to truly be without her now.
    One final note: MAD PROPS to Viktor for being one of the few characters able to make me laugh in the Apocalypse of Tears that is Arcane, with his perfectly timed, perfectly delivered dad joke when he and Jayce got caught by Mel trying to sneak into Heimerdinger's office.

    Step 1 is always getting the audience to *care* about the *characters* in my book. Taking The Last Airbender as a failed adaptation example, we're *introduced* to a bunch of characters, but they never have any *defining character moments* that make you go "I like that one! I care about what happens to them!" Then they speedrun through so many *situations* without ever establishing reasons to be concerned with what's happening.
    I didn't care about Aang because he was trying to save the world, I cared about Aang because I understood who he was and related his struggles to my own.

So an Anti Villain would be someone who does villainous things for reasons related to moral? I'm not entirely sure I know what u mean with anti-villain.

      Saying league of legends lore isn't that great hurt me as a league fan the story is so good it gets better than Arcane even the music and the music videos has story and lore in it like K/DA pentakill True Damage Seraphine Including worlds so much great story telling everywhere including comics on their website. And animated shorts you have to read the lore it's so good.

    • @daelaenor
      @daelaenor 2 года назад

      Maybe asking whether League's lore is good in general, or what characteristics a good lore shows? Apparently at some point the people in Riot decided to completely rewrite it in order to put more focus towards the legends everybody played and liked. When I think about good lore, I think about everything being intertwined, there for a reason, and everything in it abiding to the same rules. I like Dark Souls' lore, that's the major medium of storytelling that we get there, so there are a lot of intricacies including interpretations of item descriptions and each area has its own history.

    Silco was an extremely effective Villain. He "lost" (mainly because he didn't really get what he wanted at the end) but his plan was about perfect. I love when a character, especially a villain puts together a well thought out plan which, even after a few hick ups, works.

    Everything you talked about hit it right on the nail. This wasn't a rush job, this wasn't half assed, this was a labor of love that the people at Riot wanted to see be done right. And because of all the lore that is in LoL, I can see them doing the hole champion roster over time. S2 could very well be more of Vi and Jinx, or they could decide to dive into Naxus or Damacia or anywhere really. Can't wait to see what Arcane has in store for us.

      That made me laugh, but I've actually heard he and his daughter were big Avatar fans and he wanted to make a film for the fans, only for big studios to consistently interrupt and destroy his project. I imagine with all the meddling they had already done to the story before filming, he was already dreading the backlash and was like 'Fuck it, I'm tired and I cannot bring myself to care anymore' when actors were mispronouncing everything.

    I really do believe that the best villain's are the ones that are the most human, the ones that make you question whether or not they are right, when they make you question and think that they might actually have a point, they become more believable and interesting as you understand the reasons for why they are the way they are even if you don't agree with their morals or their methods its that question of doubt to the heroes and the villains that makes the conflict more interesting and satisfying.

    8:05 I really love that detail you pointed out. It shows you how mel see's the council. I was laughing my ass off the first time I saw it. Cause I immedietly saw the implications of her actions. That also brings my favorite thing about this show is that it doesn't dumb things down. It assumes that you can think and will probably see connections once you saw and re-saw some scenes.

  • @funtimenzo

  • @arthurchen6464

    Love how you mentioned the toy Mel give to Hoskel. It's such a small detail that's not focused on at all, and many people ignore it or pass on that detail to focus on the more pression dialogue and plotlines, yet for those who noticed this little detail, it tells so much more story and expands on both Mel's ability to manipulate others and how unintelligent Hoskel was.
    BTW, very nice analysis overall and editing. The "What Could Have Been" song at the end playing while you explained Silco made me realize the obvious fact that the song wasn't just about Jinx/Vi/Silco (as much as Jinx said Vi was the one who made her, Silco was obviously just as important to her transformation), but also about Silco and Vander. Keep making these videos! You've got a knack for it!

    • @vice2versa
      @vice2versa Год назад

      But another dimension to Hoskels character is that he actually respected the capabilities of the Undercity. When someone asked if they were capable of making a weapon out of the gem stone, he knew immediately that they were capable just based on the ingenuity they observed over the years. That shows hes not stupid, hes just not very good at puzzles lol

    Well, first is: Arcane is one of the best visual experiences I’ve ever seen. Animations, ambientation, COLOURS, character designs, camera/photography work…. Every frame is stunning.
    Then the characters were written AMAZINGLY well, like Jinx and Viktor

  • @muserj
    @muserj 2 года назад +6

    The "labor of love" line really resonated, and it's so apparent how deeply they love these characters from all the work that went into the smallest details in this season. Just from a story level, all the symmetry and duality they wrote into so many of the characters and the beautiful, painful human arcs that they went through are solid supports for an engaging story; but there are SO many little throw-away details they could have left out which they included to add an extra level of life to the story and make the characters feel real and this world feel lived in. Butterflies and firelights being used as passing symbols of hope, beauty, and progress all the way up till the massacre on the bridge....Powder being fascinated by "a real Valdiani" music box in the workshop in episode 1 and sticking sparklers in one to wake Vi up in episode 9....the scary monsters from Vi's story to Caitlyn actually having been drawn on the walls by Powder in the house where they used to live in the undercity a few episodes before the story. There's a scene in Silco's office when he finds Sevika hanging like a marionette with "LIAR" drawn all over her...Jinx drew "ZZZ" on her eyelid. It's on screen for a quarter of a second, but it made me laugh just a little with the painted mustache and glasses. In a graphic that could have just been kept straight from a horror film, they added just a little lighter shade of gray, and it made me hope for her that there was still any hope that Powder could win in the middle of all this darkness instead of giving up on the character. And the ENTIRE short scene of Viktor running...so brief, and yet it hit like a ton of bricks.

    There is a lot to learn from Arcane in almost every aspect, because it really is very, very good.
    But; I wouldn't view Arcane as much of an adaptation really. Sure, most of its central characters are from the game and since this is an origin story are mostly bound as to where these characters will end up. The worldbuilding is also somewhat restrained by the lore of the game. But Arcane is not an adaptation of a story. It is an entirely new story set within a, sort of, established universe.
    Pretty much all the examples you show of poor adaptations are adapting a story, a fully fleshed-out narrative, that it has to make work in a new format, sometimes an entirely new medium. I don't think it's really a fair comparison to draw.
