Oh how I miss printing. I have been out of the pressroom for 15 years. Had many miles on a GTO 5 color and a KORD,Harris 125 and another big 1950's Harris that you had to copper the rollers every morning.......... Nice to see a Speedmaster crankin it out!
I worked at the printing company more than 12 years. and I was the press man before. I can tell you working at the production unit they pay well but it's alot of pressure on your jobs. I'm glad I'm out of the printing industry.
agreed..anyone that has history in the printing business especially the pressman side understand how stressful it is. Quick turn around times, unreasonable customers and not to mention a dick of a boss that has no idea what printing is even about. Most printing companies are ran by people that have never even touched a printing press they worry about the bottom line and that's it
I was once told "you just stand there and push buttons " Here i stand grey haired ,bad eyesight and a knackered back You are spot on I am an old boy and i wouldnt wish the trade on anyone
I done got sacked for running printing machine at high speed.I had a 100,000 sheet job,4 colour, print and turn on 130gms matt with a coater unit and ir dryer.I went to the toilet after starting up the back up and with only 10,000 sheets to run,my assistant had not checked the ink ducts. The yellow had fell back. There was no chance to save the job.I won't ever work in the printing industry again. All I did wrong was go to the toilet to pop brownies.8,000 sheets of paper went into the bucket but what got me fired was that 45,000 sheets had already dropped out the yellow.Bad days.
I would’ve fired you too, what pressman doesn’t check their inks, stack or how much paper they’ve got before they go somewhere? And 8,000? That takes at least 20 min at full speed. This job is too easy to make mistakes like that, I mean 45,000 and you didn’t check your ink that entire time? That’s at least 3 hours, I check my ink every 20 min sometimes sooner.
@@Balouthegreat What pressman doesn't need to visit plop-shop? In my country, we have printer and an assistant. My assistant is paid money, yes money, to check the ink levels in ducts, make sure paper is there for next job, yes? I am paid to check the ink density on sheet and colour control follows too.Like I said,I got sacked and now after 4 years I wander around the hills of Wales looking for the odd job with farmers but I will never want to work in the printing trade again
Iv just retired after 49 yrs as a print finisher, not much iv not done with paper. yes its a very stressfull job, long houres on the go mostly 12 hr shifts cutting folding SRA1. im glad im out. partally deaf, no ear protectors in the 60s/70s.Leave it for you young ones. Good money.Yes Managers who dont know what they are on about.
Nice one! But I don´t miss the 74. Was working on one when I was in my apprenticeship. Mine was a SM 74 5C DI with the old varnishing unit. It was a bunch of scrap in my oppinion. We had a lot of problems with scratches on the backside and had to mask alot on the counter-pressure-cylinder. Quite bad if you have no place on the sheet. After that I was working on the SM 102 and right now on the new 105 XL. Wish you a nice register. Greetz from germany.
when i did this video i was using "combfix xl" with 10% ipa, about two weeks ago i put in some old "fs-12 superdot" using 11.5% ipa, an is now going like a dream, what about you? and what's your machine?
Wow old vid but still nice, are you still running the same press? Currently I'm running an 8c uv xl 106 with inline cold foil and 2 coaters. Most of the guys here won't even try to go above 10k an hr I've had it going 18k, these guys aren't even old school they just don't have the sac I guess. The newer xls the faster you run the better they print
and im a printers assistant like the bro loading up the stack at the end of the video and i dont see the point in running a machine that fast cause only the boss gains from it and the printer runs a higher risk of a reprint if something goes un noticed and i dont get a chance to read the paper and have my food on nightshift
im guessing you guys run 24hours, im running single shift, so im there until the work is done so the faster it's done the sooner i get to go home. some of the runs are into like 250,000+ so the 15000 an hour is pretty slow after 18hours of running. mate it's all in the prep if your looked after your machine, problems will be a min. and problems will happen at 10000/phr to ah.
I'd like to see that in real life....I've been running a press for over 20 years......from NC to Rochester, NY (printing capitol of the world). I have yet in my printing experiance seen a press run full out on all types of stock, printing high quality full solids. There are many things in the factor..poor feeder tender, junk supplied stock, humidity. Anyone with experiance as a pressmen knows that your statement might happen mabye 4 or 5 times a year and that's with down and dirty junk work
mine is speedmaster 102/2p and lowered alcohol from 10 to 8 percent, with 2 percent emerald3100 (aditive) and running smooth aswell I don´t know those you use. later. I read Heidelberg was using 3 percent ipa at german expo this year.
Hey man, slow it down! The only person to benefit is the boss and and if something goes wrong with the job you will get demoted to working a Heidelberg platen, your wages will get dropped aswell.
we work treble shifts and the printer i work with is a top man cause he runs his 6 color b1 speedmaster at 6,000sph and no faster and that gives us a chance on nightshift to kick back and watch the television or go online.
@pikeluke84 You repeat that comment when your boss takes you upstairs for an iqusition into a job that you f*****d up.Anyway,is it low cost high turnaround junkmail you produce? In that case you should be running the press even faster.Quality and quantity are there to choose from;both do not get on as history will show.
@00fallon ???? wot the fuck just because you cant do a top job at speed doesnt mean the rest of us cant, last year i won gold medals for print jobs done on that machine at that speed, i do point of sale for the largest retail chain in new zealand, as well as direct vocuher rewards mailers that are personal and foil stamped and diecut for the largest supermarket chain australia and new zealand, as well as stamps that go around the world, dont judge people by ur shit skill level,
i run a 41 inch 2009 xl105 6 c with a coater baddest press on the planet i run 18000 all day long i will post a video and show how its done best so far115000 shts in 8 hrs shift

+Bassmanfallon 1/2 hour brownie pop? dang!
Should have checked the ducts yourself before you went to the bog lol
You should have punched the assistant. I bet you he was on Facebook!!!

backing up at 1500 iph in this video, but yer your right i would normally backup at that speed unless it's a big run. thaks for your comments,
