I could listen to his music, and listen to him talk about music, all day. He's even led me to develop a taste for Ives.

This is definitely one of the few in-depth interviews, in addition to a video of him conducting, of this true master. Herrmann's championship of many American and British composers should never, ever be forgotten, especially his work promoting the music of Ives during the 1930s and 1940s when he was with CBS.

Thanks for posting - Interesting what he says about Ives and his friendship with Carl Ruggels. I played this peace "Angels" when I was studing at the conservatrory in The Hague (Netherlands). "Men and Mountains" is another great piece by Ruggels, who wrote very little music and destroyed a lot of his early compositions. Herrmann was of course one of the great filmcomposers but his concert music is very worth while too: Moby Dick (cantatta), Symphony 1 to name a few.

"Benny" was a great supporter of Ruggles and Ives during his tenure as conductor of the CBS Radio Symphony Orchestra.

My favourite film composer. I have a good collection of his works that span the length of his amazing career. I prefer his scores that are more string oriented than the heavy brass and drum ones. I like the muted horns, but I love any score in which he uses a vibraphone. It's a shame that he and Hitchcock never mended their differences and collaborated ever again. I think the film Frenzy would have benefited greatly from a Herrmann score. It's also a loss that he died after finishing his work on Taxi Driver as he was going to score Carrie. It would have been the third collaboration between him and Brian DePalma. One can clearly hear the influences of Herrmann in the existing score, but we can only imagine what he might have created. I like his later scores. They will never be as highly regarded as his earlier scores but it shows that he still had so much more to give, even if some in Hollywood thought that he was "old fashioned" and the younger directors knew better. I don't recognise this particular score. Whay is it from?

Herrmann is one of the greats, and I tire of this talk of ‘best composer,’ and I imagine he’d be flattered yet annoyed by this sentiment. Just make good music-challenge yourself to get better and follow your inspirations, thus inspiring others.
And yes, I understand this composition was written by Carl Ruggles.

I think this is the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble (PJBE) or at least part of it.
Principal Trpt is Elgar 'Gary' Howarth (in red on the far left), Howard Snell next to him (glasses, balding in blue) and Dave Purser at the far right on the Bass Trpt. Perhaps Philip Jones next to Dave Purser? (The guy with the glasses)
Not so sure who the other players were. Anybody?
    Great post Jason Johnson, thanks.

Herrmann's "Angels" is not angelic; among the worst things he ever did. In this brief interview, though, it's interesting and gratifying to hear that he was no egomaniac, and talked not about himself, as most famous professionals do about themselves, but only of his colleagues' achievements. That kind of generosity of spirit speaks kindly of the man. Strange, his film compositions made his name, and rightly so, while his non-cinematic work, like this "Angeles" non-entity, never caught on.

That's _Carl Ruggles'_ Angels -- Herrmann was an advocate and presenter of contemporary American music (also late romantic English music) since before he got involved in film, and continued in that capacity even late in life. Ruggles was a completely original voice in American music, generally disliked/misunderstood from the start, yet whose visionalty music enjoyed the passionate affection of composers like Charles Ives, Bernard Herrmann, and James Tenney, among others. funny you say Angels "never caught on" -- while it's not a popular hit, it has a place in the modern literature, not played often but recognized.
here's a nice introduction to Ruggles' music, for those interested:
