Know that I will never abandoned you, not for anything. She had the best voice of the group and should have lead the Supremes to success. I hear ya. Back in December of '65, I was a grade school kid living in Houston Texas. Our neighbors came over one day to excitedly tell us they saw the Supremes being escorted into the Astrodome for a concert with Judy Garland. They said they yelled "Hey, hello Supremes!" and that Diana and Mary rushed on by without looking up, but Florence stopped briefly, looked over directly at them, and smiled and waved at them before following the other girls. No wonder Flo was a favorite of the fans!

      I just looked this up on Wikipedia, "...In 1974 Mary Wilson invited Ballard to rejoin the Supremes, which now included Cindy Birdsong and Scherrie Payne (Ross had left for her successful solo career in 1970). Though Ballard played tambourine, she didn't sing and told Wilson she had no ambition to sing any more..." I thought that she desperately wanted to be the lead singer for the Supremes! I also read the following info about Scherrie Payne, "...As a new Supreme in an era when their popularity was waning, Scherrie Payne often remained quiet during interviews with the group; mainly because four years later, reporters were still asking about Diana Ross. When she arrived, original Supreme Mary Wilson and 1960s Supreme Cindy Birdsong were the other two members of the group. Payne contributed powerful vocals and attitude to the group, with Birdsong and Wilson backing her up very well. Payne gained recognition for her vocals in the single "He's My Man" (which also featured vocals by Mary Wilson) and "It's All Been Said Before", both taken from the album The Supremes. An accomplished songwriter, Payne was never able to write any special material for The Supremes, which reportedly disappointed her." This paragraph from Wikipedia tells me the main reason why Florence did not want to come back to the the Supremes to sing! It's because Scherrie Payne was the lead singer of the group at that time! It said that Scherrie Payne contributed powerful vocals and attitude to the group! Oh, that's why Mary Wilson did not invite Florence back to the Supremes to be the lead singer! That must have really depressed Florence Ballard! That puts the pieces together for me. She was heartbroken to not be called back to be the lead singer of the Supremes, because she felt that the only one standing in her way of being the lead singer was Diana Ross. So, there is no reason to hate Diana Ross. This tells me that Mary Wilson also thought that Florence was only backup singer material! And, as a final thought, Freda Payne was Scherrie Payne's sister! It was also said in the Wikipedia article, "Payne began to realize that Motown did not really care as much about The Supremes as they had in the past, due to the changing musical tastes of the era and due to the fact that they were working to further the solo career of Diana Ross." Berry Gordy sold Motown Records in 1988. So, this tells me that Berry Gordy was still in charge of Motown. But, Berry did not have his great Motown musicians with him. Berry thought the grass was greener in California. I realize now that it was Berry Gordy who lost interest in the Supremes because Diana was his sweetheart! And, Berry saw Diana as the Supremes, and no one else! Berry had a child, I read, with Diana Ross!

      Florence needed a top producer who knew how to bring out the best in her voice! Her song "Walk Around Heaven" was dynamite! The producer in the Gospel song titled "Walk Around Heaven" could not be the same producer of this song "Love ain't Love". With the Producer on "Walk Around Heaven" he would have had Berry Gordy being happy to let her sing at least half of the Supreme's songs for sure! Please go and listen to her voice on that song!! I just finished listening to the song "Walk Around Heaven" and realized that within Florence Ballard was a beautiful and deep person! She had that Aretha Franklin singing ability in her! It dawned on me that Florence stressed herself into an early grave without realizing that she was a champ on top of the world!

    • @moogooguypan2514
      @moogooguypan2514 4 года назад +1

      It was not common knowledge - no one wanted to work with Flo. She got a crap deal at ABC 15,000...a joke. Mary Wells got 250,000. When she left Motown. Flo had. a LOUD voice, but not a great or special voice and her talent as a vocalist was marginal at next. Aretha’s WORST vocal is better than Flo’s best. No labels wanted her when she left the Supremes, and no producers wanted to record her. Even all the labels in Detroit, even Holland dozer Holland, didn’t try to record her after they left Motown. there’s a reason why. She wasn’t that good. I loved her., But there was nothing special about her voice or her talent.

      @@user-lo9fo1xq8q Florence Ballard was too depressed about Berry Gordy removing her as the lead singer, and choosing Diana Ross as the lead singer. This caused her to keep complaining to Berry about it. So, Berry got angry, and fired her from the group! She should have went to the songwriters and requested that they insert in a dual lead role on a song or two to test it out. There is smart and tactful ways of doing things instead of constant complaining!

    • @user-lo9fo1xq8q
      @user-lo9fo1xq8q 2 года назад +1

      @@omarpasha2968 it’s simple really. Flo didn’t have the right, commercial, crossover voice that Berry was looking for. Flo’s voice was pretty much the same as hundreds of other singers around at the time. Diana had the voice and charisma. Flo wasn’t removed as lead singer by Gordy. If you look on old recordings of The Primettes you’ll hear that all the girls, apart from Betty, sang lead at some point not just Flo..
      You say Flo was complaining, but she wasn’t complaining when the group started having hit after hit with Diana on lead and they ALL started getting preferential treatment…none of those hits would have hit the spot with Flo on the lead.
      Berry didn’t fire Flo just for complaining. He fired her because she was insubordinate and unprofessional. She didn’t show up for some shows, and even on occasion, only Diana and Mary appeared. Marlene Barrow had to step in for Flo on occasion too because she didn’t show up. She was given a lot of chances to get herself together, but she just became more and more stubborn. It was Mary who started the ball rolling which resulted in Flo losing her place in the group..
      …but I digress from my original question , as did you. I simply asked you for the link to her song “Walk Around Heaven” which you say was dynamite. I can’t find it

As one-third of the #1 group with a voice like hers, she could have easily co-lead 70s Supremes songs right along with Jean Terrell. There were definitely some mental issues going on that may have taken professional help to deal with.

      Flo had been raped in 1969 and only told Diane and Mary about what happened. She never spoke about it afterwards. If there had been support services for depression and alcoholism back then as we have now, I believe she could've gotten thru it all. Granted, she did go to the Betty Ford clinic, but she needed intensive therapy to heal her inner self from the trauma she experienced.

      I think Love Ain't Love could have been a huge hit had Motown not played politics against Flo. This song was perfect for Florence and very much on trend for the late 60s. After Florence left the Supremes, Berry Gordy considered signing her as a solo artist, but she ultimately severed all ties and left the label. Barry wasn't about to have Florence succeeding on another label. Could have weakened the Motown mystique.

      Not IMO as someone, who has sung, played music, produced and recorded it Flo Ballard has nothing special to her voice. Diana Ross had a unique pop sound. Flo Ballard was flat musically & emotionally. Flo Ballard's performance doesn't feel the lyrics. You're obviously tone deaf. The era of the 60's and 70's had some tremendous female singers and unique vocalists. The pack was filled with outrageous talent and deep competition. Carolyn Crawford, Minnie Riperton, Chaka Khan, Shirley Bassey, Dionne Warwick, Brenda Lee, Mavis Staples, Bonnie Pointer, Cher, Tina Turner, for instance, all different but memorable.

    motown was not a good fit for her, she was more blues than pop, her voice is strong, sultry and deep, these songs dont fit her style nor the music, they didnt know how to market this talent

    • @ctruth6185
      @ctruth6185 Год назад

      Flo Ballard wasn't bluesy or soulful enough for Stax or Afretha Franklin's label. Aretha & Carla Thomas were killing it around this time. Meanwhile at Mowtown Gladys Knight, Tammi Terrell and Kim Weston were carving out their unique place with their unique styles. Flo Ballard didn't really stand out. She could have gotten her drinking under control and focused on songwriting. She didn't have that drive to keep going like Tina Turner. Sometimes that's what it takes being relentless. Its more vital than having talent. Everybody ain't built to be upfront. Being light skin wasn't enough you needed talent & a ferocious work ethic back then to stand apart from the pack.

      @@ctruth6185 Flo had been raped in 1969 by a dude she knew, and as a result, she internalized that trauma. Back then, there weren't places that dealt with women's traumas, so many women, like Flo, kept it all buried deep inside, but the results of such trauma can cause a change in personality, depression and substance abuse (drugs, alcohol) and lowered self-esteem, and sometimes, promiscuity. Tammi Terrell was also a rape victim, and she acted out being promiscuous. She also suffered from brain cancer, which can also affect one's personality.

    Just my opinion, but this isnt a hit because it lacks a strong hook to go along with the vocal. Flo sounds great but the overall arrangement sounds like a filler album track or b-side. I can hear why this didn't get radio play.

    Florence was an amazing background singer. As a lead, she was sadly very mediocre, as was Mary Wilson. The Supremes went where Diana Ross took them. They could only follow in her wake.
