I went on the ICE from Hanover to Frankfurt when I was a teen, and 2 decades later, these trains still look ultra modern. Very smooth, it don't feel like you're doing the speed. In the UK on our service we're doing 65-70mph at a push and it's rattling around like a Cessna in a thunderstorm

It is wrong to say that Germany has 'failed' to build more high speed rail lines. Compared to France, where everything is centered on Paris, Germany is polycentric. There are not many places in Germany where it would make sense to build a 300kph high speed line, since traveling on it for 30 mins (thus 150km) you would likely by-bass one or two large cities of 250,000 to 500,000 people. German rail is more built around a dense network of speedy (200km/h) routes with frequent service and more frequent stops, rather than ultra-high speed likes. Germany only has 250kph and 300kph lines were there are less densely populated areas between major cities.

    • @LS-Moto
      @LS-Moto 2 года назад +1

That is true for NRW, but certainly not all of Germany. There are plenty of places where 300kph high speed lines would make sense. From NRW to Berlin and/or other eastern parts would be one example.

Fun fact: The Germans built a high speed train that can run 320 km/hr but actually runs this speed on French rail tracks. In German (except the new ICE track between Nurnberg and Berlin) I believe the ICE has too many stops along smaller places. The biggest gain timewise is the LGV Est track where the ICE continues from Saarbrucken to Paris without stops on max speed (track time 1:51 hr). You can't beat this part by car or plane.

The biggest problem of German Railway ist not a missing high speed line. We have a general problem with missing tracks, interchanges and overfilled railwaytstations with trains. This causes a lot of delays. Building new tracks and rebuild old tracks for general rail service is more important than to build one high speed line. HighSpeed alone does not make an attractive and modern train service.
Further Germany ist smaller than France and has a different settlement structure with a lot of cities which need an own ICE ore other long-distance-service-Connection. The ICE has often not enough time to increase on 300 km/H.
Finally Germany has a lot of Mountain-Rainges, so there are a lot of Bridges and tunnels need to build a high-speed-line which makes the whole line really expensive. Some parts of the route from your ICE will need a refresh but a high-speed Line could be to expensive and uneconomical.

Wonderful narration and video! I had the opportunities to ride the trains between Munich and Paris a several years ago. One thing I noticed the most was the trains travelled on the right-hand side in Germany then switched to left-hand side when entering France. If I had to choose between SNCF TGV and DB ICE, I would choose the latter for three reasons.
One is the seat reservations: SNCF required the seat reservations when purchasing the tickets. I was frustrated when I tried to book the last-minute business trip the day before the departure. I ended up buying the ticket on board. The German conductor warned me about having to move around when travelling in French section. I had to move from one seat to other seats a several times when French passengers showed up with seat reservations. I had no problem with Deutsche Bahn ICE, which is first-come, first-served if they're not reserved in advance.
Other is HOW CRAMPED the seats are in TGV as compared to ICE. The legroom in TGV first class seats is tighter than ICE second class seats. It's even worse and more tighter in TGV second class. The restrooms in TGV is depressingly dark and tiny as compared to ICE. Why did TGV stick small dustbins against the wall in the legroom in the older first class sections? They rubbed against my legs so I found a way to detach them and toss them in the overhead luggage bin.
Lastly, DB ICE has hot meal service and restaurant/bistro. When travelling first class, the passengers can order hot meal to be delivered to their seats or eat in the restaurant/bistro. TGV didn't. Just cold sandwiches and pastries. The first class passengers receive the complimentary meals in TGV, but they're cold sandwiches and salad. No vegetarian or vegan options were ever offered. The attendant felt bad for me because I wanted the vegetarian option.
I never understand why in Paris, we have to wait for the announcements to find out which track to board the train. Usually 15 minutes before the departure and lot of stampede to board the train quickly. In Germany, they're always posted ahead of departure time...

    • @Sedna063
      @Sedna063 4 года назад

Platform number for your train is announced a lot more time than 15 minutes before departure, in general. I doubt there is a lot of difference between Fra and Ger, here.
In relation to SnCF/DB comparison, the TGV system is a mass transportation system, it's true there is not a lot of differençe between first and second class whereas The ICEs are still very exec/business oriented.
It's going to be interesting to see what the new TGVs will look like. They should appear in the months to come.

Siemens had a lot of problems with these trains so they finished testing in 2013. 4 trains then were ready to enter the service. In 2015 only 15 of 17 ordered were in service. In 2016 they managed to get this train ready for traveling to France. These are the latest addition to the "old" ICE 3 family. And yes. Due to bad tracks with no highspeed whatsoever, they decided to step back on highspeed down to 320. The track between Frankfurt and Cologne is one of the most frequented tracks in Germany and it is only for highspeed trains. And with the older models of the ICE 3, you are able to reach up to 340km/h downhill. You reach Cologne only 45-50 minutes after leaving Frankfurt. From here you could travel to Paris with the famous Thalys. (Not right now due to Corona of course) But it is a nice trip, and the Thalys is a beautiful train.

      Not exactly correct.
There are 4 tracks for operations for up to 300 kilometers per hour:
      -Köln - Frankfurt
      -Ingolstadt - Munich
      -Ebensfeld - Erfurt
      -Erfurt - Leipzig / Halle
None of those tracks will feature 340 kilometers an hour (the tracks aren't certified for such speeds, certification for 300 kilometers an hour requires 330 test drive). If the ICE drives 304, the train will automatically slow down.
By the way, more such 300 lanes are planned.
      -Mannheim - Frankfurt
      -Würzburg - Nürnberg
      -Hamm - Hannover
-The existing Wolfsburg - Berlin 250 line is proposed to be upgraded to 300.
Don't forget the 280 km/h lines of Mannheim - Stuttgart and Hannover - Würzburg.
And right now under construction is Stuttgart - Ulm, for 250 but because it is so steep, there aren't any trains that could run 300.

No, 300 km/h is the speed limit for those tracks. Between Frankfurt and Cologne it's even questionable if trains could reach much more speed anyway due to the big elevations which even prevent older ICE models using those tracks, because they wouldn't be able to start driving again after an on-track stop.

The DB (at that time still Bundesbahn) was already planning high-speed traffic up to GB through the Kannal tunnel, which the SNCF did not agree with, the SNCF was not ready to let the DB run without compensation lines in Germany. Finally it turned out the ICE 1 is too broad for the French platforms. - Heinz

This ICE detour took 42 minutes to get from Frankfurt to Mannheim. The detour starts at Mannheim Waldhof; it exist since 1985. Trains to Basel and Stuttgart had to change engines in Mannheim. Fastest time is 37 minutes if you avoid the detour, but than you have to change direction. Frankfurt - Karlsruhe is 63 minutes, but than you must find the right connection to Paris. In theory it is faster via Strasbourg, but that area between Mannheim and Saarbrucken is limited in speed. Both Karlsruhe and Frankfurt have 4 direct trains to Paris Est.

  • @tobiwan001

The connection from Frankfurt to Paris isn't good on the German side. However, Frankfurt to Mannheim is being upgraded to allow 320 km/h. Still the section from Mannheim directly to the West would be poor. Probably trains would go from Frankfurt via Strasbourg which would allow continuing speeds of 320 km/h to Mannheim and 250 km/h to Strassbourg and 320 km/h in France.

If you have to build a new high speed rail structure, you need space cause you can't use old ones! And this space needs to be straight as an arrow. Population density or even mountains not even mentioned. But most importantly, is it worth it? The "perpendicular" rail structures are capable of bearing 160+ k/ph (round about 100 mph). Germanys metropoles are not as far from each other as in in the US or france. To build a high speed railaway structure it needs trillions of pounds

To many stops in Germany you can't go for 300 above in Germany. It would be a huge waste of energy and money to bring them over 300 and then stop 'em right away. That’s why the new ICE is designed for better acceleration and is good for the environment. You are faster with 250km/h and a fast acceleration than with 280 with "normal" acceleration. Of course it would be faster building high speed routes if the route would be hundreds of kilometers long but that isn't the case in Germany. The cities are to near. They’re planning a new 300km/h extra track between Frankfurt and Mannheim, the TGV (which is expected to not operate anymore Frankfurt-Paris anymore in 2030) and the ICE to Paris could go a little bit faster.
