On April 28th, 2014 Danish metal band Volbeat met with Premier Guitar before their show at Marathon Music Works in Nashville TN. Guitarist Robert Caggiano, formerly of the band Anthrax, reveals the secrete of his signature ESP guitar that helps you see where you are on a dark stage. Bassist Anders Kjølholm shows how he gets his thunderous tone with minimal gear. Gear: Volbeat has three complete backline systems; one setup for U.S. tours and two more setups for Europe allowing them to leapfrog from show to show. Here's what they carry in The States.
Founding member/bassist Anders Kjølholm is a MusicMan man, touring with seven different MusicMan Stingray four strings. He tunes six of them down a full step and keeps one at standard E for a couple of songs. When not playing his MMs, Kjølholm plays a bass custom-made by Bill Baker of New Jersey.
Kjølholm uses two TC-Electronic RH450 amps, each one packing a bone-crushing 450 watts. He runs the amps into four TC Electronic RS4-10 bass cabs for a total of sixteen 10" speakers blowing loud and proud.
Bass Effects: Kjølholm is not an effect guy. The signal starts at the Sennheiser EW500 G3 wireless system that runs into a Whirlwind Selector. The Whirlwind allows fast switching between the receivers and a tuner-out that runs to a TC Electronics Polytuner on stage and a second Polytuner in a Furman powered rack backstage.
Rob Caggiano exclusively plays his ESP signature guitar exclusively, touring with two identical production models. The signature was based on the ESX horizon. Caggiano's ESP features glow-in-the-dark neck-dot markers, Tonepros Locking TOM Bridge and Tailpiece, a Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck and a Dimarzio signature RC Custom in the bridge. Caggiano strings his ESPs with D'Addario EXL140-3D Nickel Wound Electric, 10-52.
AMPS: Caggiano runs two Fryette Sig:X G100SX 100W Tube Guitar Amp Heads. One acts as a main amp, the other as a slave. The main amp runs two Fryette Deliverance D412-P50E 200W 4X12 cabinets. The slave amp runs two Fryette Fatbottom 4x12 cabinets. All cabinets live on stage.
Effects: Caggiano runs his ESP into a Sennheiser Ew500 G3 wireless systems which runs into his Jim Dunlop GCB95F Cry Baby Wah into a Musicomlab EFX MKIII Effects Controller which handles channel switching on the amps and at the same time turns on and off presets of his peddles. Looped into the switcher is a TC Electronics Polytuner, a MXR Custom Comp, a TC Electronics Spark Booster, a MXR Smartgate then a Pigtronix Philosopher's Rock Compressor/Sustain/Distortion. Next inline is a MXR Micro Chorus then a Boss DD6 Delay connecting to a custom Tap-tempo pedal. Next is a Tech21 RVB Boost then a Death By Audio -- Interstellar Overdrive Deluxe. A Rocktron Hush runs through the amp's effects loop. The Musicomlab has four presets and 3 amp sounds: lead, rhythm and clean. The switching presets are as follows Preset 1. Amp channel Rhythm , MXR comp,TC spark, Boss delay tap Preset 2.Amp channel Rhythm , MXR comp, death by audio, Boss delay tap, Preset 3.Amp channel Lead , noise gate, and micro chorus Preset 4. Amp channel clean, philosophers rock, reverb
Special thanks to Volbeat's Guitar Tech, Tue Bayer for all of his help!
No rig rundown of Michael Poulsens Rig?
Love the guy doing the interview. You can see he's interested. keep him on the videos!
They already have a rob caggiano rig rundown on here! How about a Michael rig rundown? I think it would have been a better choice
SG GT's to JCM 800's. Boom! Rundown!
So basically everything is "cool", or "very cool".
Some things are actually cool AND very cool.
Danes really appreciate a no-shit down to earth dude like Rob. He fits so well into Volbeat, hope he will stay there because they sound so much better now. Just went to see them here in Denmark to kick them off for their tour.
I totally agree with you! iMeMySelf.... I love Rob,....He seems to be himself nomatter what, and that is something I SO, SO respect.....( Norwegian girl, here....lol ; ) )
would've been nice if they did one for Michael's gear. he was one of the people who inspired me to play.
Make this dude do more reviews. Chill and to the point. Really enjoyed it.

I think this is the second Premier Guitar interviewer aside from Rebecca Dirks who does such a great job interviewing musicians/tech. It just feels like a conversations between friends more so than an awkward meeting. Overall I nice to see what gear is being used and details are always important. Way to go Premier Guitar.
good to see an interviewer who knows about guitars and actually wants to know about the artists kit
Glowing fret markers isn't an original Idea. It's a GREAT idea but Luminlay has been doing it for a while.
Gotcha !
Why did they not rundown Micheal Poulsen's rig?
+Sawyer Smoak He's giving interviews?
Anders mentions that his rig is just guitar into amp, but it would have been cool to know which amp he's playing
Marshall, methinks. Volbeat rehearses one door down from my practice space and i remember seeing some Marshalls in there.
Marshall JCM800 2210.
Awesome, thanks :)
Watching this with captions turned on is so funny. Rob Caggiano Says: "It suits the music we are playing, it just sounds killer" but closed captions says: "and I'm troops music reply and i just said the child killer and so..."
Should've done Michaels rig.. He has those sweet Gibson SG GTs. I'd love too see them.
Man,Rob Caggiano's sign.guitar is a real beauty, not to mention DiMarzios with a 5-way blade coil-splitting function and I see the budget LTD version has almost the same features for half the price, nice.
Yeah I've got the LTD version myself, and I have to say, without a doubt for me personally one of the nicest playing guitars I've ever had, and it sounds awesome, only thing I eventually want to change is putting on Sperzel tuners, like the ESP version has, other than that, the specs are pretty much the same :P
Mickey Giesbers Great,it's pretty impressive how they can build a budget version, that's just as good as the hig-end model, besides of the Sperzel Tuners everything else is the same,Yeah,O.K. the Made in Japan ESP,are not mass produced & have higher grade woods but who cares?
Yeah exactly, and today I got my Sperzels so after this weekend I'm gonna put them on there (need the guitar this weekend for a gig, so better not be screwing around with it now haha) but yeah, it's a great guitar :P
Can we get a updated version of this.
Gotcha
Thanks! That was usefull
He's wearing a municipal waste shirt, that's rad!
Brian Beni Torres... Gotta ask you... ( I'm from Norway, so please excuse me, sweetheart..) What does "rad" mean? Is it like "cool" or something like that? I keep hearing that word, lately... I've never really come across it till now lately.... I apreciate all help you can give me on this, cuz it's getting kind of frustrating, hearing that word (and not really know what it means , for sure...lol ; )
@@rebeccadrum3137 yes, short for "radical"
It sucks that Michael wasn't also in this :(
Nice mural on those Cabs but he probably only has 2 Full stacks hooked up like a lot of other bands with 10-15 full stacks behind them. LOL I've seen plenty of Walls of Marshalls w/o the speakers and they were just cutouts.
Love , love Volbeat. My kiddos shared their music , haven’t let go since! Absolutely love Rob, he’s one amazing lead string! The bass, the entire band!! They’re such a mix of their own! Can’t wait to see them preform with Ghost!! This will be such a highlight!! Rob is really incredible!!
his idea? hardly. i started marking the necks of my guitars (kramers, followed by ibanez') with phosph't paint in the late 80's. i was using them on the road, just before we started opening for satch on his u.s./"surfin'" tour. i got the idea from ibanez (i was endorsed by 'em after kramer), who used to use phosph't plastic for their jagged/shark's tooth fret-markers...
Dude you should get Premier Guitar to do a rig-rundown with yourself and set the record straight!
He didn't say it was his invention he said it was his idea to put them on his signature guitar.
thanx for clarifyin' my butter ;) yeah, the phossie shark's teeth was done for some of paul gilberts' rg's in the late 80's. what i did was to carve/whittle tiny triangles just underneath the fretboard/binding on the facing up side of the neck, & then fill 'em with the phossie paint.
i did that on all of my axes, including strats, & my self-designed "bedrock" guitar, a 50's moderne, coffee-table-shaped boomerang, as well as hanna-barbera's endlessly looped windows the flinstones/jetsons passed when running down those seemingly/incredibly long hallways, so that the artists only had to paint ONE window next to the ALSO looped table & lamp underneath/to the side of it. howzzat for some serious meandering? but you DO remember those boomerang-shaped windows, don'tcha...
you should have patented the idea then trademarked your name or such on it. you would be smi.lin all the way to the bank
That 12th fret inlay is the sign for "jupiter". But what it does mean for Rob indeed it is a secret...
Seth Morrison of Skillet does the same thing as Rob with his Dual Rec. Channel 3 is his rhythm, Channel 2 is his lead tone.
You guys Should do one on rammstien.
Something that frustrates me to no end is when someone who's interviewing a pro keeps talking too much, needlessly saying "yeah cool cool" and such and otherwise interrupting. Just let the pro talk and stop feeling the need to say something every 3 seconds.
Maybe I missed it but what about the Marshall amps? They look like the channel JCM800 2210's I think.
That is not his idea for the side dots. It is a feature ESP Japan has been doing for decades!! He just took credit for it here wtf
i dont think he knew about japan doing that, im sure he brought the idea to ESP not knowing japan had the same idea so technically it's half his
nah the idea was created by a company called Luminlay in Japan in the 90s. It was adopted by ESP and now starting to get popular with many builders including F Bass, Zon, etc.
He said it was his idea, he wasn't taking credit for them. He's referring to the idea top put them on his signature guitar. If you were building a custom car and decided to put on 5 spoke rims, that would be your idea, you're not taking credit for them.
Bummer I wanted to see the 2210s!
Sadly, the bass player left the band. :(
yeah, not fired or anything like that.
i hate when musicians show their rigs and never show how they sound!!!
Craig Brown go see them live. Duh or watch a video
4 Min 37 that's a secret ??, J'espère que vous commencer à comprendre hein !!! Moi je connais son secret :)Il n'est pas vraiment différend des autre celui là
Rob....you are amazing!!
Volbeat is a Pokemon. Nothing else.
i love these rig rundowns. but sometimes i wish the interviewer would shut up and quit leading the answers
that's really really cool….and it's very very cool...
Music Man Germany? I didn't know that. I wonder how much they'd cost compare to the American made Music Man guitars.
Depends where you live.
I'm from New Jersey
Joel T135 EAS RSMV An american made is way cheaper, because of the shipping
I think There's also an Indonesian variant of the Stingray and they're cheaper, affordable, and still great quality.
Where's Michael Poulsen's rig?
TECH TO THE RESCUE!
Rob “Yeah Yeah” Caggiano
Rob is lord of all beanies.
I don't see the Sig:X G100SX on the Fryette website. Are they discontinued?
cool, very cool
I hope he gets back to Volbeat, he is an amazing performer live.
Very amusing! So Rob used the Tone Zone - whose characteristic is being very mid-heavy - and had it customised by adding more low and high end. Errrrrrrr.
Does anyone know what the signature pedal is ?
Somebody have to know now that it's 4 years ago... :P
We need a new Volbeat rundown with MIchael's rig :)
SG GT's to JCM 800's. Boom! Rundown!
Municipal Waste are gonna fuck you up!! Sick shirt
I love how the interviewer is completely floored by Caggiano's LED markers. It's not in any way a new thing xD
Perry Bean's article for every rig rundown he does lists even the specific models of the power conditioners and wireless. Good stuff!
I remember seeing these guys live at Carolina Rebelion. They are loud as hell!
I wish I watched them, I didn't tho I think I was waiting for rob zombie after seether for like a hour and a half during their set. I was pretty much in the front and didn't want yo lose that spot haha
still one of my favorite bands ive seen and ttey r really loud
Oke cool
did the pedal ever come out
Did Rob's signature pedal actually come out yet?
please do a poulson one
Very nice thanks rob.....u kill it ....love your style 😎
Damn, uses DBA gear
Where's the pedal?
very cool
What do you mean “worship music “?
So awesome
Nice piece. Great production value and editing. Very cool!
Rob's gained a lot of weight man
Fantastic!!!! a true Rock Icon.....
very cool
Are the glowing inlays only ESP or are the on the LTDs too?
LTD too, I've got the LTD version and it has em too
nice, man. i've gotta look into one of these?
Yeah I really would recommend it, you know of course every one has their own preferences, but to me it's the nicest playing guitar I've had
Basically
really ''Bass''ic setup i see :p. nice nice.
this guy needs to be back playing with Anthrax! such a killer player
So basically. Very cool. lol
props to malcolm young....sweet
👻🎶👏 talent
You can see that Anders got some Problems talking English 😅
No respect to a player that doesn't even know what kind of speakers are in his cabs. Like that doesn't matter because I don't know good tone when I hear it!
semiLive sixstring strumist Doesn’t matter in a live setting and in studio they’re using entirely different equipment.
@@jacoobyslaps the speakers you're using when playing live
@@Metalbass10000 What?
More low-end than the Tone Zone? Yuck. :/
tech to the rescue!
