Pretty sound advice. Thank you. The only thing I would do differently is put my water bottle on the opposite side as my cook system & fuel. That will better balance the pack and allow you to pack your water filter system in the pouch below the cook system & fuel. If you have to carry two equal size water bottles the point is mute. If you have two unequal size water bottles, pair the smaller one with your water filtration system.

I’m 5’8 but got the long version of the bad for the extra 5 inches on the width…. I’m really hoping I love this pad 🤞
So Ive been a bushcraft/primitive camper since young teenage years , lots of gear /weight , heavy strong materials . never been into long hikes , just find a hole in the bush and set up camp , now at 51 , recently have gotten into light titanium cook gear , light sleep gear , stuff sacks etc. , and have been looking into going fully ultra light to do more hiking , I dont mind weight but want to get the best out of the journey I can . Ive been researching ultralight packs , and as a guy who has countless amounts of different high quality packs/rucksacks for what i do (somewhere in the 20’s lol), I know what Im looking for . I have looked into sooooo many and quite disappointed in the choices , however this pack hits all the marks . The design and packability of side pouches and main bucket hits all Im looking for and are use to . I just ordered mine this morning and am looking forward to getting it packed out and putting some miles in .....
I had to stop and watch this two times just to confirm that Tayson is my backpacking hero. A true guru with an in-depth understanding of how to enjoy yourself and be comfortable living the ultralight life. He is so involved in this concept that he decided to pack without the Bee-Free water filter.....unless that is the hidden bulge in the top left pocket that is his secret message saying "no matter how lightweight you go - never forget the water filter!" I got the message Tayson and great video always my friend. Now that the fun is over. this really is a great and simple video to explain weight distribution and organization so that no matter the trip, your gear is always readily available. Super easy with pack like the Shadowlight that have organizational pockets and a main compartment that can be snuggled down for smaller loads or expand up for larger trips.

I was making a pretty big mistake with my pack liner in that I was shielding everything from the rain. But I think that was reducing my usable space inside. Very useful video.
I love this pack. My four packets hold my water bottle, my FLIR camera, a first aid kit and gloves. In the black stretchy pockets I have my poop kit, my notebook & fishing license, sometimes my Helinox chair and sometimes rain gear. Hooked to the straps are my Kula cloth, a recorder and my Garmin InReach mini and an emergency whistle. In the main = the bottom is my sleeping bag and pad, then my food/water filter/electronics/fire kit, then extra socks, a SmartWool long sleeve shirt and a balaclava, and on top my tea pot and stove & dishes and a puffy layer and a warm hat.My waist band pockets hold sunscreen/bug spray/lotion & lip balm on one side and my lunch/snacks on the other. I always wear either a brimmed sun hat or my Seattle Sombrero, a good bushcraft knife and I'm armed. If we're overnighting, the tent goes on top, because it's the first thing going up when I get to camp. Nice video, Tayson. LOVE your gear. The ONLY thing I wish was that the pockets on the waist band were a little tipped towards the front, so they'd unzip easier. I have to hold the belt to get the belt pockets open, which kind of defeats the purpose.
Just ordered the Shadowlight 60L; happy to cut off over 2 pounds of weight. Great idea with the four side pockets; that and the weight is the reason I ordered one.
Bin liners are a good cheap alternative to pack liners. Most people have these at home. Also if you are going to go out wet hiking double rap everything in bin or pack liners don't have them going in the same directory go in opposite directions as your goods will stay dryer longer. I have been involved with Scouting for 37 years and have learnt from bitter experience if hiking in the wet that it isn't much fun eating soggy food or wearing really wet clothing.
Love my SL 60 completely happy with it. Only a couple of minor things I'd add but not a deal breaker. Just the fact that its 3 lbs lighter than my wife's pack makes me happy.
Nice pack! One thing you didn’t include is food for more than the current day. Because food is pretty dense (expect for freeze-dried meals, but I keep all my food together), I usually put it in the middle - on top of my sleeping bag, beside my tent. I fold my inflatable sleeping pad flat and put it against the back panel, so there’s room for my extra food next to my tent, where you put your pad.
I have already taken my Shadowlight backpack on a spin fully loaded. It was a 19 mile day hike. I wanted to try it before my first backpacking trip. What do you think about placing the sit pad underneath the pad on the back of the backpack and removing the internal frame? I found that the frame comes up too behind my head for my comfort. The backpack felt amazing without the frame.
Hey Tayson, if it doesn't exist yet, any chance of a summer or warm weather version of this video? Yes it may be common sense on substitutions but also sometimes we may not bring as much on warmer trips so it would be helpful. Thanks for all the awesome things you guys and gals do!
My backpack 🎒 just came in this week. Can't wait to use it. Looks great, feels light. Quick question.. how waterproof would you say the Shadowlight is?
The fabric itself is waterproof. It has a water proof rating of 1500mm HH. However, the seams and the zipper are not waterproof. That's why we include a free Nylofume pack liner with each pack. If you use the pack liner, there's no way your gear inside the main compartment will get wet.

Take a drink every time Tyson says typically! LOL If you're going out for a longer stretch and need to carry about 5 days worth of food would you still be putting it on the top or shift it to the middle because it now outweighs the tent, etc.?
The concepts still apply of putting the most dense heavy items in the middle of the pack to keep the weight distributed most comfortably. If your food bag is more dense and heavy than the tent or pad, you can put that in the middle. Another idea is to separate food out according to days, and keep a couple of days worth of food at the top, and shove the rest down in the nooks and crannies around the tent and pad.
Question: Looks like about a liter or 2 of water. Is that all the water you take? If so, on longer trips, what is your water purifier method or do you take an extra bottle of water?
The Shadowlight can fit 2 one liter bottles in each side pocket. I usually take 3 or 4 liters of water unless I know I'll have a lot of water sources along the way. My favorite water filtration system is the Katadyn BeFree!
Depending on your gear, you may put it in the middle of the pack instead of your tent, and strap your tent on top of the pack with the v strap. If the bear can is the right size, you could also use the v strap on top to strap the bear can on.

Well I would put it on top with a V strap

Usually putting it in the large hip belt pockets. They can fit a full size phone in them.
