      It sort of makes sense, after all they are basically just exact copies of the real games software wise (except for the patches that get applied to them to make them work). The way they are patched however is pretty much of quite a "high quality" I suppose, if the loading of the savefile on bootup of the game wouldn't be done as smoothly as it is, the game would seed much differently most likely

Idk if those are anything like the GBA rom hacks of the Oracle games. Those (at least with my copies anyway) can’t save. They have the function, the in-game save doesn’t really do anything. The save state broke. Just be careful when dealing with fakes.

    From what I’ve seen yeah you’re right only some carts can have a battery installed, and seems to be a small % chance that your repro cartridge will not work at all (faulty glitchy ram) but when they are $3 each and only 1 in 10 is error that isn’t bad compared to paying $200 for a single loose copy. I really hope i could install a battery otherwise i might just buy a handful of different repros until i find that 1 good copy…

    Interesting video! I have always been on the fence for the longest time of buying repro-carts but I've noticed that the quality of them over the years has significantly improved.
    A question I have is are you able to trade and transfer pokemon between the repro-carts and the gamecube games (Colusseum/XD/Pokemon Box)? Mainly because I dont have a second GBA but still have the gamecube link cable.
    Also going to look into getting a ROM dumper for GBA/GB games so I can transfer over the event distribution Items to my Genuine Emerald Cart

    • @slashkingcodes2598
      @slashkingcodes2598  Год назад +2

      This "current generation" of repros seems to be quite good, yeah. Atleast that's what some googling told me, seems like before that repros were very hit or miss, now they probably are still hit or miss, you can always get unlucky obviously, but the ones I got are really good quality wise, yeah.
      Hm, while I don't have a Gamecube (I do have a Wii) and most importantly not a Gamecube Link Cable, I can answer this question to you in another way. If the Gamecube "reads the Pokemon off of the savefile" of the game then it won't work. If you need to turn the Gameboy on and the Game actively "communicates" with the console, which I am assuming that's how that works, in that case it will most likely work. The save data is effectively "not there" if the game is turned off, but as soon as the game is powered on it basically behaves 1:1 like a real copy.
      Getting a ROM Dumper sounds like a good idea, I'm actually playing with that idea myself^^

    My only issue with the reproductions I got is the annoying pause due to the difference in how it handles saving games, the fact that I can’t do the Battle Tower cloning glitch in Emerald, no migrations to gen 4-5 and the fact that I can’t write saves to it using gba backup on NDS with an r4 cart (I can read and backup, but not write)
    These are all considerably niche things though, I feel like for most people, it might be worth taking a look at. Also, mileage may vary, I’m pretty not all of them suffer the same pros and cons

    I have been able to write a save file to a reproduction cartridge before.
    Using the gbx flasher, you can analyze the cartridge and see the save type. (SRAM/flash, etc. and size)
    Load a copy of the rom into vba and configure the save type in the settings to match what is on the cartridge. Save and it should create a save in the same format.
    On the gbx flasher client (forgot the program name), select the save type manually from the drop down.
    Then write save, restore from file, and select the save you made.

    I would say be very careful with just adding in batteries to repros, a lot of them are missing several parts and could be dangerous to cart readers or similar if they're not added along with the battery (and even if they aren't, most lack a pull-up resistor so the battery will drain quite fast without it). Some bootlegs actually have the full 128kb save capability so no need to mess with the ROM (other than RTC patch and things). FR/LG never had RTC so actually bootlegs can run these perfectly if you get a cart with the right specifications (would still need battery unlike the original because no FRAM on bootlegs). No bootlegs I know of that aren't nearly as expensive as a superior flash cart do have RTC, so they will generally be RTC patched to run while the game is on. Because many bootlegs only have 64k memory they will be patched with custom functions to write to blank space in the ROM and write back.
    Bootlegs with 128kb SRAM will generally in the modern era be what hobbyists call the "A4" type, since they have a chip that says A4/A6 on the board. These use bank switching to use 2 sets of 64k memory, so actually they have 128kb like a real cartridge does. The catch is that they need logic to switch between them and such and so they need unique patches to work. Some popular fan games that generally can come with these off AliExpress are Pokemon Quetzal, Pokemon Unbound, and Pokemon Radical Red. If you get one with no battery (sometimes you can ask the seller for a battery and get one), currently a lot of them are shipping with a custom globbed flash chip that as of now can't be patched by cart writers, but hopefully that will be fixed soon as people that work on software for 2 of the popular game boy cart writers are working on it. Once those patches are out, it would probably be a better cart for pokemon IMO.
    If a patch comes out for the custom flash boards basically you'll still have the benefit of the separate save file (no digging in the rom for your data!) but no battery needed for the save. Currently what a lot of people do for that instead is patch the mother 3 carts because mother 3 bootlegs currently all use real flash chips for the save and not SRAM. However, they are much larger and so need to be patched first.
    You can reflash some of these bootlegs if you have a cart writer like the GBXCart or Joey Jr if it's compatible and the A4 ones particularly don't really need to do anything with moving the save file which is really cool. RTC won't work properly when the game is off in any of them though. Generally the A4 patches come from other A4 carts, but in some of the cart writer discords people have uploaded the ips files with only the patch data so you can patch your own rom to work.
    It can be a bit of a lottery which bootleg you get but there's definitely a range of quality among them.

    Thank you so much for this, a lot of explanation about stuff I've encountered.
    I bought a copy of Emerald from Ebay when I got a GB Operator and I was so excited to play it and didn't realise I was given a repro copy. I couldn't save the game and I was so confused because if I played it on a handheld device, it worked fine and could save but when I put it in the gb operator, I couldn't access my save. So you've just solved that one for me!
    I started doing a professor oak challenge on Emerald and before even my first badge, I would occasionally get level 100 pokemon in the wild. I've always assumed this was a symptom of it being a false copy and took it as a bug. I have no idea if it's a bug that exists in the real version but it's still a mystery to me

    All repos use flash no repros made in the last 10 years use rom, it's simply a dump of the original game with all save function calls modified to write to flash aswell, which is why the music stop since you can't read and write to the flash at the same time, also the games take maybe 2 mins max to dump if you use a real dumper like a GBxCart RW (u can also use this to flash any game you want to the cart given you wanted a different game on it)

    • @ulqi

    • @icey_projects

      @@ulqi no you would have to google "batteryless save patch" and patch the game first, or depending on the game and cart if it has sram you would need to add a battery altho it will not last long as there is a chip that puts the sram into a low power mode on real carts when no power supplied to cart from gb (from my testing adding a battery holds a save for about 3 months before it dies), furthermore in repros he states you can add a battery for rtc(time) which that is untrue to have rtc function it would need a crystal oscillator (that silver "can" that is on a real pcb) which the battery powers to keep time which no repros ever have sadly, if you want to accurately and properly play the games on real hardware the proper way is 1 either a real cart or 2 use an ezflash omega DE (must be a DE if you want pal park to work), which has all the proper hardware like RTC etc with the added benefit it uses an sd card so could put the entire gba library on it (as well as comes with an nes emulator which allows you to play entire nes library from the cart aswell [notasponsor_justagoodproductfortheprice])

      @@ulqi Interesting question, I'm pretty sure if you patch a different game onto the cartridge it will work "just fine". And I'm guessing it will also save "just fine" if you solder a battery onto the board, though I'm not sure if a "save battery" is any different from a "utility battery" for keeping track of real time events like in the pokemon games. Could be that batteries used to hold actual save data are wired differently on the board than those used for real time events, but I doubt it. Obviously your repro has to "support" soldering in a battery in the first place for that though (or you have to jankily hack support for that together yourself)

  • @pennyandrews3292
    @pennyandrews3292 Год назад +2

    Well, if all you want to verify is that the ROM hasn't been changed much, then you could just dump the repro cart and compare it to a dump of the real cart of the same version and region, using a binary file compare or something. My impression of repro carts is that they work an awful lot like an Everdrive... that is, with an Everdrive, you have a ROM stored on an SD card's flash memory, and the save data is also written to the flash memory. The only difference being that with a repro, you only have enough Flash memory to store one ROM and its save data, and there's no menu system. I would be surprised if the ROMS were altered beyond just whatever it took to make them save on the Flash, though, because it's not like they would benefit from putting a virus or malware on a GBA. Repros are pretty much made by writing ROMs that were dumped from official carts at some point onto Flash memory. I did actually notice what you're talking about with the saving being a bit strange, though. I noticed that on the repro carts, it was very easy to use them to clone Pokémon by shutting the power off at the right point during the trading process, because there's a longer window when saving before the data is stored.

    • @slashkingcodes2598
      @slashkingcodes2598  Год назад +1

      I'd say the repros do work somewhat similiarly, though they are pretty much a "super light weight" version of something like an Everdrive or a flash cart. They dont have all the "middleware" like a menu system, they go for the cheapest route possible basically, which is to replicate a real cartridge as closely (and cheaply) as possible. As such, they basically work like real cartridges, they have a real physical ROM chip (according to some comments the ROM is really a flash chip, which makes sense, as it's rewritable to make saving possible) and they also have a real physical SRAM chip, as that's cheaper than flash memory. Whoever made these could have also gone down the route of adding a menu system, an SD slot or whatever else, but I'm pretty sure that would cost a tiny bit more money, and since these are dirt cheap to manufacture (I'm assuming so atleast) that would probably result in quite a loss of profit. And they are obviously made as "reproductions", meaning they are supposed to "mimic" the real cartridges as closely as possible, a menu system would seem a bit out of place if you look at it from that angle^^.
      I knew there are differences in the ROM from the getgo by the way, I was aware the games do infact work differently, but there is a difference between working differently to enable saving and loading, and working entirely differently to the point where the game seeds differently and "majorly" deviates from an original copy, atleast to me that's a difference^^

I'll also have to really watch out with ACE, normally messing up and writing gibberish into ROM wouldnt be a problem as it's read only and nothing bad can happen, but clearly the ROM in these cartridges is in fact anything but read only^^'

    This is exactly the video I was looking for! Thank you for focusing so heavily on RNG manipulation, and for explaining so clearly how the repro carts do their weird saving. I'd wondered for years why the repro carts couldn't transfer up to gen 4, and now I know! Thanks!

    • @slashkingcodes2598
      @slashkingcodes2598  Год назад +2

      Somebody else asked this question too, I'm gonna respond with the same answer as I can't test it myself:
      If the game is powered on while interacting with the N64/Gamecube, then yes, it will most likely work. If the N64/Gamecube reads the data straight off of the game's savefile however, as in, the game is not powered on, just connected to the Gamecube, which reads the data straight out of memory, then it won't work, as the save data physically isn't there/doesn't exist if the game is powered off. If it is powered on however the game pretty much works 1:1 like a real copy!

    Question :
    Does putting the game in a DSLite while RNGing in Gen4 games changes the parity of the delay ? You're supposed to plug a GBA game in the port if you hit odd delays and want an even one etc

    • @slashkingcodes2598
      @slashkingcodes2598  Год назад +1

      Hm, I know what you mean, I'm not super familiar (anymore anyways, been a while since I last manipped on Gen4) with RNG Manips on Gen4, but I'm pretty sure the parity thing comes from the game checking for *anything* in the GBA slot basically, I assume (idk if this is how it actually works, just an assumption) this has to do with the game having to figure Gen3 to Gen4 transfer stuff out , which adds/removes 1 RNG advancement to do the necessary calculations on that.
      In other words, I haven't tested it, but I'm 99% positive it will most likely give you the offset, as the only thing that matters is that *any* game is plugged into the slot, and the repros are indeed a game^^

    So to understand
    If I wanna transfer pokemon from the repros up to gen 4 and 5, all id need to do is have at least 1 legit copy to trade them over THEN movie them up?
    I ask because I have a legitimate copy of sapphire and fire red. If that's what I gotta do to move them up then its no issue for me

    • @slashkingcodes2598
      @slashkingcodes2598  Год назад +1

      I think there is another comment or two on this, seems like the ROM Chip is a flash chip, which makes sense and explains why the ROM is infact not read only at all^^. I haven't checked it myself, but that does sound like the most likely candidate to explain this behaviour

    So I bought a fake copy of bw2 for the ds. I really don’t care if it’s fake as long as it works and I can play it for a long time. From your experience, is there anything I should be worried about when it comes to gameplay, saving, or anything down the road?

    The easiest way to understand how repro saves work is realizing that repros are basically a flashcart. A flashcart with only one game inside of it but still a flashcart. When you save the game in a repro cart, it stores the save similar to how GBA flashcarts do it. In fact, it is possible to reflash any repro cart with a different game, just like you can with a GBA flash cart. Most harware made to extract GBA roms and saves (including Nintendo DS CFW) are capables to inject a full ROM inside a GBA repro.
    Nintendo DS and GameCube games doesn't recognize GBA repros saves just like they can't recognize pokemon saves from a GBA flashcarts. There are some GBA flashcarts capable to run in a special mode so it works with DS and GC games, but as far as I am aware, no repro carts use this (too expensive for a cheap cart like these)
    Also, it is entirely possible to inject a Pokemon save inside a repro cart. There is a special tool that can be used with a DS to reflash the repro cart combining a save file and a ROM file (Bootleg Pokémon GBA Save Extractor and Injector). The tool is capable to extract the save from a ROM file dumped from the repro and inject a save back into the ROM. But every time you do this you need to reflash the whole cart, not just the save. Given that repro carts are very cheap flashcart I am not sure how many times you can reflash those carts before it stops working.

    How long do these repro cartridges hold save files?

    • @taylorroos4414
      @taylorroos4414 Месяц назад +1

      anywhere from 2-200 saves in my experience depending on the repro quality. if your gameboys battery is low when you save you will lose your file though. Because no repro iv come across yet has a battery in it it needs your gameboys battery to be at least 1/4 full in order to save (the save uses a lot of power and saving with a weak battery just causes a crash and all files to corrupt). Even when using a fully charged gbc or gba the save file will corrupt eventually though I havent yet figured out what causes it. Best to use originals or higher quality repros that have a battery installed. Alternatively if you have the correct software you can save the files on an everdrive or similar if your that way inclined.

    I ordered a fake gba cartridge by mistake not knowing that they faked these just a few days ago. I bought 2 gba sp that I’d like to play my original cartridges.
    If you don’t own a gba or do one one and is indecisive on whether to spend you money on a real cartridge, if you have a pc, just emulate these games, it’s fairly easy to do, there’s plenty of vids on RUclips that help me out a lot. It’s just I wanna relive my handheld gaming memories 😌

  • @SweaterPuppys

    I actually think repro carts aren’t that bad? Considering a casual Pokemon fan probably won’t play the entire game and if they do most repros will last just as long if not longer, cheap and easy to get and play if that’s all you’re really looking for. Repros are not good replacements for real copies
    The only problem is the transferring which I know from experience doesn’t work, unfortunately.

    Gute Erklärung wie die "Echten" vs die "Emulator" Spiele Speicherdaten abspeichern. Ich hätte nie gedacht das die einfach in die ROM geschrieben würden! Cool das jetzt immerhin klar ist das auch RNG-Manips auf den anderen Versionen fuktionieren.

    • @slashkingcodes2598
      @slashkingcodes2598  Год назад +1

      Hm, es sind eher die "Echten" vs die "Reproduktions" Spiele, auf einem Emulator funktionieren die Repros z.B. gar nicht, da Emulatoren den Code zum Speichern nicht verstehen (wie auch, ein echtes Spiel könnte gar nicht den ROM Addressbereich verändern, der ist halt read only). Aber dadurch, dass das Laden der Speicherdaten halt so sauber programmiert ist, startet das Spiel danach quasi "sauber" und wie das echte Spiel, demnach produziert es echte Seeds. Emulatorseeds entstehen übrigens dadurch, dass der Emulator das Spiel zwar "gut" emulieren kann, allerdings eben nicht perfekt. Es gibt selbst bei den besten Emulatoren immer klitzekleine Fehler und edge cases, in denen sich der "virtuelle" Gameboy nicht verhält wie echte Hardware, wodurch eben gerade hochpräzise Funktionen wie die Timerfunktion (die zum seeden genutzt wird bei FR/LG) quasi gederailed wird und sich anders verhält als auf echter Hardware^^
