I would 100% watch a series of this game.
Me too! I love Blades.
Adam Koebel has a series of it as does the game's creator John Harper I think.
ruclips.net/video/jsmw4wC7iOE/видео.html this is a link to one of the best
Well then... do you watch oxboxtra?
ruclips.net/video/8Lwxp-5QxR0/видео.html
Johnny plays in this one.
I don't see why we have to play Blades in the dark. Couldn't we just turn the lights on?
No, don't you remember? We don't have power in the house anymore for lights. Should've paid the electricity bills over the last couple months, I suppose.
@@SaitosaBard ugh, guess we'll have to rob ANOTHER friggin gold idol from the weirdos to pay for the bills.
@@jesusmcastillo8306 the weirdos you robbed only has one gold idol. You need to rob it from the guys you sell it to last time
@Paplefication, @SaitosaBard, @Jesus M2 Castillo, @Dragon JAW -- Or, we could steal it in transport and sell it right back to the weirdos we stole it from. Then(if we need more money) we steal it Back from the weirdos and sell it to the guys we sold it to the first time, basically one big Gold idol Money loop....
You know the rules. The lights come on then so does the bag.
One thing that many players and GMs get wrong about Traumas is that it takes you out of the current encounter, not the whole mission. After the encounter ends the character snaps out of their daze and can be played with their new quirk, which gives them XP.
Also, certain crews can gain additional maximum Traumas, which can result in retired characters becoming playable again.
still is hours of staring at your phone
You've convinced me to find the game/buy it. the only downside is, i no longer have a regular group to play with and im tired of DMing i want to learn the game as a player to recapture that experience of being new at something. So if anyone here is planning to host an online game, and wouldnt mind inviting a stranger, I would totally be down.
Luke: *sees this video* "Ahh yes."
Scum & Villainy also uses the Blades in the Dark system but in a Sci-fi setting. Just started reading through it, and it looks fun!
I cant get over how genius that flashback mechanic is. Its fleshes together so well into the game!
It singlehandedly turns what would be a game all about frustrated planning into a wonderful improve heist movie full of twists
@@jamieadams2589 I try to reccomend this to anyone who wants to play a roleplaying game, or who just wants to be inspired by hos the book is written!
Took your advice on Villagers (having never really played tabletop games above Scrabble and Monopoly at Christmas). It’s excellent. Thank you.
well you got your toe in
Did the same, really enjoyed it, beat my gf at it but still can't beat the Countess...
What makes BitD really special to me is that not only the player/character has a charactersheet, but also the group has a Charactersheet. In the TV Series Firefly the ship itself feels like a character itself, because all the crewmembers make it into something bigger than its part. Giving the Group its own charactersheet was a genius idea by John Harper and I wish more Games would incorporate.
There are numerous sci-fi RPGs which do this, to some extent, with their ship. Probably most extensive in Mindjammer since the ships can be AI-controlled, and even played as a character (in the Traveller edition anyway). I also recall a simple iteration of a group identity/style sheet in WFRP 3rd Edition which builds up a specific resource for group use over time. Trying to wrack my brain regarding any other fantasy themed ones which also do it, but it's rare.
So, is this basically "Thief: the RPG"? :-)
The book sites Thief as one of its main influences, so, yes!
Or Leverage the Medieval RPG Version
Would like to see you play this with Outside Xbox/Xtra to see what they'd come up with for flashbacks.
I'd like to see what Ian and Aoife would come up with :D
great idea
The Playstation Access crew had some interesting roleplaying when they did Cyberpunk as well. I also think Ben and Peter from Triplejump / Vidiots / are creative and would be fun to watch doing any roleplaying. Basically I want all my favourite youtubers to do an 'Expendables'
1 year later....
Well now I need to find people I can force to play this with me
same
The Locke Lamora series has been one of my top 5 set of books so far,
an rpg that lets me run/play in a similar world sounds like crazy fun! :)
Consider me sold Johnny!
I agree. I am just starting the first book. (Late to the party, I know)
Have you ever read the Emperors Blades Trilogy by Brian Stavely?
It is an often overlooked but FANTASTIC SERIES as well.
No one enjoys books anymore, so if you care to, check it out!
Dicebreaker is such an awesome channel! I know a lot of people are asking for it but a let's play of Blades in the Dark would doubtlessly be fun.
It's that scene in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure where they need to get the key, and so flash forward a plan to go... back and leave it there. Excellent!
Hey, it WAS me who stole my dad’s keys! 😂 lmao that was exactly my thought about this as well. Kindred spirit
I run a campaign of Blades for my friends where they play a group of assassins. On one memorable job they where tasked with taking out a cruel foreman who was working in a factory guarded by members from an enemy gang. The plan was simple: the Lurk was supposed to sneak in and kill the guy, while the rest of the group distracted the enemy gang by throwing in some Molotov cocktails through the windows. Due to some misfortunate rolls they were discovered. The Lurk ended up killing the foreman, but was then trapped on the roof of the building with enemies approaching, while the others were surrounded on the ground. The Lurk called for a flashback to the night before when she - of course! - had prepared by attaching a rope to the roof. She bungee jumped from the building, and managed to escape. The others managed to fight off the enemy gang with a combination of brute force from the Cutter and the Leech, and the help of some working class ghosts whom the Whisper convinced to ”rise up against the oppressors”. The Leech used a flashback to get a smoke bomb, which helped them to escape, just before the Bluecoats and Spirit Wardens arrived at the scene. It was amazing.
I bought Blades in the Dark because of this and I never regreted it! Thx. :)
You could litterally talk about whatever and make it interesting for the short and the long term. The GMing shows, you are a great story teller/narrator.
Apart from that, this system sounds really interesting, because it seems like it doesn't have such a vast rule system like i.e. DnD that you have to understand to be able to play it effectively.
As such, I came here since the Oxventure spinoff starring our own Johnny!
Same
I liked it when Johnny called me "you scoundrel."
Sooo
How much worse than Blades in the dark is managing an oxventure?
Just so we have a scale
Well we'll find out tomorrow
I'm so happy you are covering indie RPGs.
I play this and it’s one of my favorite systems. Join us scoundrels within the dark.
Awesome. You had me at Lies of Locke Lamora and Vlad Taltos. I already ordered Blades and Symbaroum based on the 10 Great RPG's video. I'd love to see a "Why you should play Symbaroum."
Dicebreakers promising start, the golden years
So...who else is here because youtube recommended this after watching the new Oxventure Blades in the dark series? 😄
Thank you for inspiring our GM to learn this game and tech/ GM for us. We just had a session 0 to make our crew, Shadows.
The Unusual Drowned (our base is a semi-sunken ship) with a Whisper, Lurk and myself a Hound.
So hyped! He shared this to get an overview of BitD
Thank you. TTRPGs are only beginning to bud in my region of the world. I hope this video excites my board game group. It has to. It must. I want to run/play blades more than anything.
Blades in the dark sounded like a party I went to,after the power went out.....when the lights came back on though,we had fresh fruit punch and people were holding knifes!,ready to cut the sub sandwich!.how nice of them!😀
Don't think I have been more convinced to play a roleplay game more. Always wanted more reason to plan heists with my fellow players and with the game being compared to Lies of Locke Lamora... Well!! I need it.
After years away from roleplay games, it's a shame that I decided to immigrate to a country where I barely speak the language...
I really wish this video was 5-15 minutes longer. Mainly I would have liked a brief overview of character creation and what a “round” looks like. Overall I’m sold though.
Duskfall sounds like Darkfall....and only two letters off....
If JackDarkfall is the mayor,I'm gonna scream!.
Two letters
@@PatrickLongblkwhtrbbt oh sorry,my bad.
If Jack Darkfall is the mayor, Corazon will set sail for the city asap. 😉😍
@@madalice5134 XD
Loving the gang who sell courses in their "secret sign language". I assume they weren't the sharpest gang in the drawer.
Look it's hard on them streets. Everybody got a side hustle.
So, I watched this video 3 months ago, and I wrapped up my first campaign a few weeks ago. Thanks for the recommend, this has become an exciting and stylish RPG that has helped make a story that brought us all to tears.
Inspiration drawn from The Lies of Locke Lamora? Sold. I've been wanting to play a system like this since I read that book.
I finally realized what the Flashback system reminds me of - the ending fight in Bill & Ted 1. “I need the keys!” “I put the keys here yesterday.”
I’m itching to play this in a time travel story with flashforwards and paradoxes in the flashbacks. Can’t do a flashsideways, as that’s only when everyone is dead already. #spoilers
Is it just me or does the city sound like it's based on Victorian Whitechapel?
Sounds like Darkest Dungeon meets steampunk Gotham city
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
Yes! Lies of Locke Lamora is so good!
I went and bought this after your recommendation in a previous video.
I Would love to see a lets play of this (i know it would be some long hard work but it would be cool as a series like the way oxventure is done, non live stuff).
maybe then we could see how johhny plays rather than how he dms
Also: DID YOU SAY SCOTT LYNCH?????
FUCK YEAH, I'M GONNA PLAY THIS GAME!
The important thing is this: to be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become.
Dicebreaker helped me determine why I just wasn't enjoying D&D, I enjoy the roleplay, but when my group is more about numbers it drains the play, for me at least. Being in a group with 8 players probably didn't help either, the sessions dragged or you didn't feel you had much input.
The stress system seems to be inspired by the Darkest Dungeon game. I'm really interested in this one.
Yeah, the art looks really similar too
Blessed is the man who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.
I have a request: in the video description, could you please list the music you use in the video?
sounds like players earn Stress and Trauma in the game, while for the GM it's in RL :D
I actually ordered it after you made the video on RPG’s.
This game is rad! Great breakdown! Band of Blades is also stellar!
EDIT: Lies of Locke Lamora is rad! I hear book 4 is done and due out next year!
2 years later, and we're still waiting
There is no need to enquire about this "Leviathan". Any such rumors from the Segmentum Tempestus are to be reported immediately and subsequently forgotten. This is your sixteenth request to play Dark Heresy First Edition.
Bought it after seeing Johnny recommend it aaaaages ago and didn't regret it for a second. One of the best RPGs I've played for sure
Wonderful video. Just introducing some friends to BITD and this video basically covers the gist! Cheers
You can do what's reasonable or you can decide what's possible.
Johnny, as an avid book reader, I want to thank you for the name drop / suggestion of
*"The Lies of Locke Lamora".*
I am always looking for new victims to devour! These are almost as long as the GOT books and there are already 3 in the series! I am excited to play "Blades in the Dark" as well, but at least for now I have more media to enjoy!
Thanks again!
😍🖤💀🖤💀🖤😍
As a frustrated DM that has watched my players Plan for over 2 hours just to ultimately throw that plan out the window the first chance they get... I'm definitely getting this...
I think you missed a key detail. As I understand it, you don't just take stress to resist injuries, but you can take stress to resist *any* consequence.
This kind of narrative concession to the players is very important. For instance, it lets them make plans work if they really want to force it, and are willing to bear the stress.
I love it, but I can easily see how many players would think it is silly to dilute the GMs power in this way. Regardless of anyone one person's opinion, it is important that they know this fact about the game, as it would strongly inform whether it appeals to them.
Thank you so much for this video Johnny. Blades will most likely be the gateway rpg for my friends and I.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Band of Blades. It seems to be in the same universe, but because it's so new there isn't much info. Get major Black Company vines from it, and it has me intrigued.
Could you potentially play as GM for two groups each going through a campaign of their own, and then reflecting the changes each made to the world on the other, and eventually building to a blowout standoff between the two groups?
Nicholas Hulbert yes absolutely that’s what I’m doing
that sounds crazy cool
@@BryanCantDance but how do you manage rivalry groups interactions? I mean you need both groups to respond to reach others actions, right? But whenever one of them are doing something the other can hear and see it.
I want to use this to run a Shadowrun or Cyberpunk game
I'm looking for my first TTRPG and this looks right up my street. I love stealth games (especially Dishonored and Hitman). Can you Homebrew though?
To a point you are encouraged to homebrew with this.
The book literally has an entire section that says "Feel free to throw most of this out if you want to homebrew"
I’m not going to lie.... I am scoundrel. And I 100% whole heartedly recommend everyone plays this game. It’s incredible.
What's the music in the beginning? It's beautiful
Is there a Twilight Zone/Black Mirror anthology style RPG system? I'm aware of Dread but that exclusive horror themed, is there a system that could be used in a variety of settings for a series of one shot sessions?
I played a Whisper, but kept taking Veteran Advances for other classes, starting with the Devil's Footsteps one that I flavoured like the Blink power in Dishonored. I basically ripped off Corvo's backstory with a bit of Batman thrown in, with Setarra giving me magic after I was framed for murder as a Bluecoat. I hadn't realized who "Scurlock" was when I ticked him as my associate, but when I found out who he was in the setting I decided that he'd be my character's Tuxedo Mask figure, and her secret boyfriend (whose true identity she didn't know).
Unfortunately the game's high turnover rate and the friend I joined for leaving made me too anxious, and the schedule conflicted, so I dropped out.
I am however thinking of doing a Blades in the Dark one shot for Halloween about a bunch of scoundrels being hired to infiltrate Castlevania and knock off Dracula.
This one wins upon the comparison to Lies of Locke Lamora
Lies of Locke Lamora is awesome. We named our son Locke after the book. I saw your 10 RPGs that aren’t DND and immediately ordered a copy of Blades in the Dark. Can’t wait to run it!
That's such a cool name!
Will you be doing videos like this one for the other RPGs you recommended? I loved this more in-depth look at the system and setting, and I would really like to know more about those games as well
what is the music being used in the video?
I’ve been reading through the book ever since one of my players saw your video about systems other than dnd, they were really interested in it and the premise of the system fit much better with the type of game we wanted to play. Funnily enough we were going to use DnD for the adventure, but decided to switch over and I’m so excited to start with this system
Can you play this thing on the channel please? I would like to see it work.
Man I really wish I knew what this music was
I vote for a game with the oxventure crew and Wheels. Should make for an awesome adventure, maybe even as a live steam?
You got your wish, minus wheels..
I’ve been getting the conversational ball rolling with a friend about possibly trying out some table top sessions. (For me, this will be the first time I’ve ever properly played one) A lot of it has been thanks to this channel being a great conversation starter. Keep up the good work, Dicebreaker!
Just the lore alone makes this game looks insanely interesting, plus some really cool mechanics to mess with. Looking forward to GMing a game soon.
A 3 D printer would be a possible assets to make your characters with ! Unlimited potential (except for money)🥴🙀👵🏻😱🖖🏼👽🐲👍🏻
I’d watch this, man. Maybe invite the oxboxtra crew to play? Maybe get Andy to run a game so we get to see you as a player
It's worth noting Wheels (the other Dicebreaker guy) has also GM'd a lot, so I think if and when they play RPGs, the two of them are gonna switch in and out of the chair.
I have watched this video about 5 times now, despite knowing the system and having already played it. It's just a great overview on a great system. Absolutely love the new blades campaign y'all have started, Kasimir is a fantastic character
I think Johnny's enthusiasm adds a lot to it
Notes from a NG human Idiot;
I just recently aquired Blades and have started my game group on a Campaign. Let me introduce you all to GREED-E(currently going by Wolfram & Hart Law Offices):
My Half-orc loving Player: Currently playing a Ghost Fighter Cutter that was raised in a Chairty House in 6 Towers
My Edgelord: Currently playing an exiled Iruvian Prince Spider working as a Barrister in Whitecrown
My Casual: Currently playing a Severosi Ghost Hunter Hound with Masochistic tendencies also working out of 6 Towers
My Wild Card: Currently playing a Skovlan Lurk with Leech leanings working in Whitecrown as a part-time Info gatherer for the Edgelord
Crew Type: Currently Assassins, but plans are to move briefly into Bravos then finally into Shadows(they're trying to model their Gang off of the Angel Villians Wolfram & Hart, hence why they took the name). Their based out of Whitecrown, but have territory in Charterhall.
Their current score: cause a Money Laundering loop to form between themselves, The Bluecoats and the Imperial Military(which inadvertently leaves The City Council floundering)
I'll keep you guys updated on how it goes....
May your Pantheon ever favor you
Baron Trevelyan of Restenford
I admit i am easy to exite with a cool RPG, but doesn't matter, I AM HYPED TO TRY THIS.
Tye most immeesive most atmospheric of all settings, is this game the one i should pick? Looks good but its the MOST immersive atmospheric?
I like how simple it is compared to other RPG systems
Play this with Eurogamer! It would be hilarious.
I've been playing since beta and it's been an absolute delight to GM this game.
Good review piece.
YOU EVEN SHOUTED OUT BAND OF BLADES YOU HERO
Love your tattoos. What is that style called? Great video BTW
Thanks! It's blackwork
Dicebreaker you should do all these videos shirtless so we can see them all. I swear tattoo appreciation is the only reason I’m asking. Mostly.
I probably won’t be playing blades in the dark but I really want to play it’s sister game scum and villainy
It's on the list Johnny I swear. The list is just 67 games long!
Currently writing a blades in the dark campaign specifically because of you guys
Don't want to sound like a dick, but there is something terribly wrong with 'writing a BitD campaign' as a statement. That is absolutely not how this game is supposed to be ran.
I’m a beginner gm who picked this game up and now all I need is a group to play it with, I have so many ideas
I adore Blades in the Dark - and its focus on GM and PC improvisation is something I'd heavily encourage all GM's try out (if not players as well), as it's improved my GM and RP game considerably regardless of which rule system I'm using.
Blades was also my gateway game to PbtA-influenced systems, which are now something I really like apparently? All the new kickstarters for systems I'm interested in are PbtA games!
What exactly are PbtA games?
@@TheMorrigan31 Heya!
PbtA = Powered by the Apocalypse - a rulesystem that's become quite popular, and a fair number of newer RPG's are heavily influenced by it.
In particular, having a partial success in addition to the otherwise binary fail and succeed conditions, as well as booklets for each class as a handout for players tend to be strong signs that a system has been influenced by the PbtA
@@Kharrakster aah ok sounds nice! I've played nothing but Pathfinder for the last five years or so and I'm just starting to branch out a little but so far I really enjoy games with non binary success systems a lot. Thanks for the info ^^
This video definitely sold me on this game
Where the citizens are just as likely to stab you as give you the time of day which is why I have a pocket watch
This seems fairly reminiscent of a lot of more modern games, such as the latest version of Star Wars, where you can spend advantage to have planned ahead.
It seems a bit of a cop out to have players spending points to say they planned ahead, rather than them actually planning ahead.
This video made me buy it. It's gonna be my first Pen and Paper. =) I love tabletop dungeon crawlers and co-op RPGs. I am really curious about that! Is everything you need in this one book? Because other P&Ps I've looked up always needed a bunch of books to play.. from core books to palyer- and DM books etc....
2 years late but yes, everything is in the book
Bought it, read it, SO ready to play it.
Can confirm: best bloody game ever :)
This would make an amazing anime in the same line as Castlevania.
