    For Ashish below ; get to know your horses well enough , & you will get to just think the commands , use the same simple command for each request , in your own language , they,ll get used to you , & they,ll know what to do , they latch right in to your emotions , like a dog studies you , but more intense . My grandad used to plough with a horse , & he told me . You can,t hide a secret from your horse , he / she knows you better than your wife ! Treat it with respect , & rest it as it will get tired , it,s alive , an animal , not a machine . All the best from england .

    There's no doubt who's driving that team. She is on it. The horses are on it. It's like a symphony. That sickle mower is in fine trim--and so is everybody else. Well done.

    As a kid I saw mowing like this in Maine. It was only a glimpse from a car. I was lucky enough to see both loose hay work and small bale haying. I also saw milk can milking and bulk tank milking. I was exposed to many traditions, though no effort was made to actually do it. The farms I knew as kid are no more. Farming around the area in Maine I knew is dead. The farm my dad took from 90 acres of weeds to a humming bulk tank dairy is now a housing development. Thanks for keeping a window on the past open.

    Back in the 1800s and early 1900s we would cut and process our hay with this setup using four teams of horses on two shifts each on two cutting machines. We put up 1100 acres of hay with a total of 3000 ton each year on one cutting. Grandpa told me it was quite a process and our hay crew consisted of over 20 men. Today we put up the same yield and acreage but with one swather, one rake and two balers. 4 people versus over 20 people. The times have changed for sure. Cool video!

      @rodeynsrene1007 4 года назад +2

      @@ilikeponiees I don't think all resources plus you say most of them use draft power, it might be true if talking per farm but the ones using machines are capable of producing much more and on a larger scale, I don't think you would use cows or horses for 1000 acres or more...
      Machinery are getting more efficient over time so I wouldn't worry to much for "all resources", farmers are contributing a small part of that compared to pollution in the city or where people are the most. You talked about having no space while large scale farming but again crop technology is getting better and better so you would require less land for the same amount of crop.

    Thanks for this video. I am presently restoring the same mower as filmed here and watching the video has demonstrated how the controls work which has been very helpful. Of course the fact that the mower operator was so pretty made it easier to watch multiple times as I figured out what each of the levers and petals was supposed to do. Thanks for a very informative video.

      @DoingOutdoors It looks like a McCormick Deering horse drawn sickle bar mower. I have the No. 6 and it's very similar if not the same model -- same foot & hand controls.. Not sure what "No" means but there are multiple models.

Hand sawed all the wood for heating. Hand sharpened the saws, hand milked 50 cows. I also worked a farm for a year.

    I am from the State of Washington, the west side of the Cascades. I happened to come upon your video using a horse pulling a hay mowing sickle and I was surprised for sure. This method of mowing dates back to the 1920s through the 1940s before Tractors came into wider use. I was impressed with the nice job of cutting you were doing and the fact that the equipment your using and the parts to keep it running well are still available.
