  • Hello again, all you absolutely magnificent people, and welcome back to another fun and educational episode of An Ecologist Plays Empires of the Undergrowth! In today's episode, we are doing the first Wood Ant (Formica rufa) mission, Rising Tide, and attempting to survive on a European beach. But life is not so peaceful on this beach - a variety of predators call this beach home, and we are also facing competition from a rival colony. Speaking of which, we discuss two types of competition that can be observed during our foraging forays, and also delve into Wolf Spider reproduction, how a Formica rufa colony establishes (including an easter egg or three we can observe in the nest), and discuss limpets.
If you have any questions about the game or any of the creatures we encounter, please pop them down in the comments below, and I will do my best to answer.

Oh yes, I am having an absolute blast in it! I have had the game for a while now, and played it quite a while back. But then it just remained in the backlog of games I really want to play. So glad I have the opportunity to do it now (and pleasantly surprised by how many viewers there are)!

I was wondering how hermit crabs get their shells and I looked online but I didn’t really get an answer so my question is how do they get their shells and do they get new shells if their shell breaks? Also what are their shells made of?I love how u talk about the insects and give facts about them as well

Great question! So, the hermit crab has an exoskeleton, but it is soft (not a proper hard shell like most other crabs). So, instead of making its own shell harder, it finds an empty shell of a sea snail, and puts its body into it (its tail will curl into the spiral of the snail's shell). But it has to find a shell that is of the right size: too small, and it's body will not fit; too big a shell, and it will be too heavy to carry around, and too easy for predators to pull it out of it. While it is carrying this shell around, it will of course keep on growing, and will eventually become too big for the shell it is carrying around. So, it looks for a larger shell. And when it finds one, it will pull its body out of the old snail shell, and put it into the new empty one.
Regarding your question of what the shell is made of: it is mostly calcium carbonate (so, calcium, carbon and oxygen). It is quite strong and lightweight, and works quite well.
I'm glad you are enjoying the fun facts I give about the amazing creatures we share our world with! XD

Well done on beating the Infected Broodmother, Raptor! Bob is an awesome ally to have😁

@@AnEcologistPlays I was so close to dying and have well over 40 stacks of healing nullification, apparently parrying summons allies, because every single parry Bob and his family came out and they jumped the infected Broodmother, it was at a 25% hp and Bob and his family melted it.

If you look closely at the nest workers you see that 3 are black ant workers

Oh my word, you are correct! I had a good look at those starter ants now, and I realised that the colouration threw me off. I guess I expected any remnant F. fusca workers to be black in colour, not black-and-red-banded. But the models match, yes - there are indeed some F. fusca worker ants there. Thanks for pointing it out! :-)
