I wonder if it would be a cool idea to do another concept video like this and compare modern cards to vintage cards? Is greninja the new charizard? Is magikarp the new alakazam? Is Latios/latias the new mew/mewtwo? Will they be as valuable as vintage? Who knows, but thanks for getting my noggin thinking! Keep up the great work!
Great video, brotha. This is a video that I indeed watched with my dad. He was never convinced of the value of the cards, and when I pulled the moonbreon, he thought i was nuts. Saw the price on tcg and didn't believe it was real. Sold it a few days later, and he was eventually convinced of the hobby. This video helped him out a bunch more. Also. Your top 10 video you posted last time was great. I didn't have time to comment, but it was my favorite video of yours you've posted so far. Good stuff, Phil! 👏
@@phillips.collectibles I'm in my 30s, so trying to convince the older generation (pops) that cardboard is worth something is tough. These last videos have been quality.
That kind of reminds me of going to a card store as a kid with my dad when base set, jungle and fossil were relatively new. I remember seeing the Charizard for $120 with the other original holos and my dad thought "well these will probably go on clearance eventually"
Demand is everything, if a set is fun to rip with a good chase then it's a good investment. Greninja ex is being cornered so it's a terrible investment, the train has left the station. Seems like the market has become more informed when pricing new modern cards. What cards are the sleepers!?
Do you think it's worth chasing the twilight set and 151 set. I have taken a break from buying cards qt the moment. I just want to know what suggestions you have. What is your take on surging sparks? Love your videos. Thank you so much for helping the community.❤
@@michaelwernich8887 Surging Sparks is going to be a really strong set. Not amazing or 10/10 but a solid 8/10. It will do well in the future, in my opinion. Grab some Pokemon center ETBs and hold one or two sealed, because that promo card is perfect. TM I would say if you can get a great deal on a box, buy a couple. It will also do well in the future, as it's already rising in price steadily. Try to focus on booster boxes if you're investing in general, and the Pokemon center ETBs sometimes too.
I know that competitive cards fetch a significant mark-up, and I don't feel as if art cards are often fully appreciated (or maybe it's just subjective). Hard to know what I'd say makes a card the chase.
Can you explain what cards are shown on this price graph!? I wonder if those are graded ones, raw copies or just all sales for the respective cards. Besides that, did you answer your last question? No offense, but if so, I missed it.
Great analysis! After consistently watching your videos I feel like I know how to anticipate what will be a mega hit card by knowing all the boxes that need to be checked. Before when I saw a new card in advance of release that I really liked, I'd think "please don't be so popular, be affordable." 😂 Now I can make better accurate predictions.
Unfortunately I think that Greninja is gonna stay pricey. But another reason its gonna stay pricey, Is because I think people aren’t going to want to open TM in the future because of the risk of pulling an Ogerpon SIR. Pulling that Hearthflame Oger was the most underwhelming pull I’ve experienced. At least with the Moonbreon there is still the possibility, however slight, of getting something else good In Evolving Skies.
I remember the sword and shield Paul raids and they were brutal. All those top chases resorted chilled. They should definitely be worth the money they’re listed that if not more. Hello Violet for me is more attainable and more realistic.I wonder if these coming sets will have something that eclipses the greninja.
Video 4 of commenting on every Phillips Collectibles video until he hits the deserved 100k subscribers: That is undeniably one of the best summaries of the Pokémon cards market that has ever been uploaded into this platform. With basic level explanations, you can say everything that someone needs to now about investing in the Pokémon TCG. Great work, really.
Very unfortunate for me. So, 3 years ago I was into collecting around the time evolving skies came out. I bought around 10 to 20 packs of the set, and I managed to pull the glaceon Vmax alt art. Now, at the time, I'm not really sure, but I think the card was around 100 dollars. Fast forward a couple months later, Fusion strike released. Bought 3 packs, pulled the gengar Vmax alt art. that card at the time was around 120 dollars I would say. So, I had these cards for a couple of months, stopped collecting, so I decided to sell. I got I think 200 dollars for both at a local card store. After watching this video, I am very sad about what I did :( I should've held on to the cards just for a bit longer, but you can't turn back time. My advice to people now is, when you manage to pull a card, and see it is worth 70 dollars or more, KEEP IT. Hold on to it just for a few years or less, or you will be like me. (sorry for bad English, it is my second language)
Does anyone have any advice on when the right time to buy greninja would be? (Asking as a collector to get the right price and not as much as an investor)
I was in 4th grade when Pokemon first dropped collected as many as I could and played all the games grew up and got out of it had my son and let me tell you has he brought me back started collecting this year with him. I pulled Umbreon reaching for the moon I got so lucky I went into Walmart bought a $30 mystery box found one evolving skies in it and pulled the card and didn't even know what I had and was like that one is really cool went home and put it in a binder seen RUclips videos and about Pokémon my pants😂
Those who pay $55 for a 8-9 pack ETB at Target/Walmart means a single pack costs them roughly $7... Most ETB's contain between 1-3 hits. Most hits are inexpensive dbl rares. See where I'm going with this? Honestly, Pokemon cards aren't expensive enough considering what ppl pay for them sealed. I've seen ppl buy and open a $200,000 base set as if every card will be a fresh PSA 10. When in reality, if u graded every card, maybe 15% will come back a 10. And gl with that zard grading a 10. Odds are you'll lose at least 150,000 dollars like an idiot for opening a sealed box that should be no more than 50k.. And ppl wonder why the few modern cards that are expensive are so expensive? Smh...
I only have so much extra money to spend monthly so I have choose wisely. Sealed is always my primary way to go, however only singles I love to collect right now are gold stars ⭐️ such beautiful vintage cards, got my first one being the gold star metagross LP condition for great price and I’m absolutely happy. Not selling anytime soon. Looking forward to my next gold star pick up 😊 happy collecting all!
I think it was around when break point released, as the code cards were purposely made different depending on what was in the pack, white border code cards would be heavier and they would be put in packs with regular rares, black codes were lighter and they would be put into packs with holos or better, this would pretty much balance out the weight of each pack so heavy packs were no longer a guaranteed pull
@godping5664 just a slight correction on my end, xy era packs either had the white codes or the full green ones, the full green ones were the heavier one's that had exclusively regular rares, the white codes meant holo or above, they changed it to what it is today in sword and shield era. But i forgot when exactly, around the release of evolving skies probably.
I just sent my first cards off to get graded! I ended up using TAG instead of psa, just because I like the slab more. While psa would definitely be worth more money, Id rather have something in my pc that I love aesthetics-wise
Pokemon cards aren't valuable they are just pieces of cardboard. The only collection that warrants high prices should be the original 1st set. People are just speculating/gambling while cornering the market. This forces people who actually care about the cards to pay over/artificially inflated prices. Why is every current set going up in price? These aren't collectors, they are speculators there's nothing collectible about a new set.

Buy the same card in Japanese. Way cheaper and better chance for higher quality. Only if you want it for the art tho

Yes some Pokemon cards are valuable but there are many more factors to consider, is it Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, Charizard or Lugia? Then yes.
Some Pikachu cards don’t go as high as $200.
If you could only choose either the Greninja or Gengar from this list, which do you think potentially have a greater long term value?
Greningar.
